When they took out the food court this mall's fate was sealed. The owner at the time thought Dick's Sporting Goods moving in would bring more business to the mall. It did the exact opposite. Now the mall is dying. Dick's Sporting Goods robbed this mall. It was fine where it was at. I went there during the last 2 holiday seasons and it was dead inside even on weekends during the holiday season. It's funny that the Sears at Boulevard Mall bailed before the Sears stores in Eastern Hills and McKinley Mall despite the shittier attendance numbers at Eastern Hills and McKinley Mall. Think about that.
The food court was awesome. I would always go up to the people with the free sample trays & get a piece of chicken or even a grilled chicken sub sample from Charley's. Other times, I'd just go there to sit down & rest for a moment. But yeah, the mall lost it's edge when the food court went away to make way for Dick's Sporting Goods.
Thanks for filming this! It was my fav mall to visit when crossing the border... was there the last day Sears was open and am shocked at one of the Macy’s closing
1. Chains start vacating 2. Nationally branded stores start leaving 3. Local mom n' pops fill in where national chains left 4. Mom n' pops fail 5. Mall fails
Hasn't been the same since the days of Suburban Lanes right next door. I remember going here with the little penguin and umbrella sign out front on Niagara Falls Blvd. Late 70s, the 80s, and 90s - this place was jammed. Holidays was shoulder to shoulder with people. There were times when you had to park over at the theater across the street, which is now Wegmans.... it was that busy.
That Dicks used to be the food court with a beautiful merry go round in it I still can't believe they got rid of it. I spent hours in this mall in my early teens and haven't been back since.
The mall now only has a few shops, including the book store shown, Spencer's & more. I now go to the Red Cross there every other month to donate blood (I used to go to Mid-City Plaza in NT, but that location closed).
Since I work in Amherst, I used to shop at this mall from time to time. I was shocked that the Macys Mens Store is now shut down. Macys itself isnt doing so good anymore because they literally are giving stuff away with all their sales combined with more sales.
This mall looks like it is making a turnaround! Not only do I have a high interest in abandoned places, but also abandon rejuvenated, in other words, Saved Dead Malls. I hope you will consider in future doing some Saved Dead Mall videos ;)
Mike's Explorations getting worse tbh. Doesn't help the mall owners are many years delinquent on taxes also, this mall will probably be closed within a couple years
Mall doesn't seem in bad shape at all. Yeah its not packed but compared to some of the empty malls out there with leaking bad ceilings, this is a nice mall.
Absolutely crazy how fast this mall died. The mall is still open with the fountains running but it’s so creepy to walk through because only 1 store open in the main hallway
This used to be the "it" mall. The Walden Galleria has taken over that distinction, and the Boulevard has to compete with a lot of nicer plazas surrounding it. It looks like they painted, though, it looks brighter than the last time I was there (which was Christmas last year).
This mall looked really nice and pretty new to be a dead mall. I was curious about when it was actually built so I looked up some info on Wikipedia and was really surprised that the mall was actually built in 1962 but it appears that there have been additions over the years and a major renovation in 1997. I think it looks really nice and perfectly modern however I was in high school in the early 90's and I am very, very fond of that decade to of course I like it! I am very curious to know the reason for the decline of this mall. Do any locals know? It looks like a really nice place and even as it moves toward more independent stores, it looks well taken care of and even the local stores look pretty nice. The independent stores to me looked as nice as a typical national corporate chain. Was there a demographics change, an increase in crime or a newer mall that took customers away from this mall? Anyway, I hope that this mall can rebound, I really like it. It deserves a 2nd lease on life.
brian5o you have two major malls with big name shops. Between the walden galleria 15 minutes away to the south. And the Niagara Falls outlet mall about 20 minutes to the north. Both an exit off the interstate. This mall also has a big tax problem as the owner (out of state iirc) hasn't paid taxes in years, the newest store to the mall is dicks sporting goods. But they also built one 2-3x bigger at the galleria.
And far as new malls. The galleria opened in 89, and this mall was packed till the mid 00's. It is a nice mall. But. Didn't keep up with the changes as well as the galleria (which has the same owner as the big mall in Syracuse) and the outlet which has no shortage of Canadians coming there to shop
brian5o The area around it is getting a little tougher. Especially after a Wal-Mart opened nearby that has a lot of shenanigans. There was a big stabbing in the Boulevard Mall parking lot past year and it's also been known to have hustlers and panhandlers lurking around in it. One guy approached my friend and I begging for money because he said he had just gotten out of prison. The previous commenter mentioned the Galleria being in a better location. True, it's right off the Thruway....but that's an increasingly lousy area there. Lots of crime there......the Sears there closed partly due to having the highest theft rate of any Sears in the country.
Brian50..... Major reason for the decline of the mall was taking out the food court a few years back. It was still a very busy food court into the 2010's. The mall also had the Buffalo Athletic Club (BAC) just outside the food court entrance. This was a very busy gym/club and since closed down and moved down the street as a new LA Fitness. Lastly there is "Boulevard" Commerce square down the street that has the trendy restaurants...the Best Buy, Lowes, Target and Starbucks, etc.
A couple of closed anchors, and a few closed stores. Hardly what I'd call a dead mall. There was a noticeable lack of foot traffic, but it is a weekday and malls just aren't that busy during the week.
Back in the 90's malls would be crowded no matter what day of the week it was. Sure the weekends might have been busier, but malls would be full Monday to Sunday. Back then on Sundays a lot of stores stayed open. Now they all close early on Sundays.
Been to this mall at Christmas time on a Saturday... Dead... There's nothing in that mall now, penny and dicks sporting goods and that's it now, anyone from this area (I live 30 minutes away) goes to either the prime outlets about 20 minutes away from this. Or the walden galleria about 15 minutes away
Even on the weekends this mall isn’t very packed. I live in the area, and the mall has been going downhill for a long time. They took out the food court, closed a lot of stores. I remember it always being packed no matter what. Ever since the outlet mall in NF opened up the whole new section, it’s been going downhill.
If this mall is dying, it’s just barely starting. Other than the missing anchor stores, the place seems to have plenty of activity and shopping. I loved the fountain.
What can I say? I remember coming to this mall as a young kid from 1986-1993, then 2002-Present. After all, we Canadians enjoy a little USA shopping since it is only 2 hours away. The food court was great, and the carousel was a nice touch. This mall used to thrive so beautifully. Now, it is a mere shadow of what it used to be. I was really sad to see what it has become. No more food court, and the movie theatre is long gone. Why do I still come straight here after crossing the border? I have faith that this mall will turn around for the better. I enjoy giving the stores my business. Walden Galleria is nice and all, but Boulevard has heart. My one theory for this malls downfall is the recently updated Walden Galleria, and Fashion Outlets. Both were nicely renovated with more brand name stores to boot. What has Boulevard done to attract shoppers back?
When they took out the food court this mall's fate was sealed. The owner at the time thought Dick's Sporting Goods moving in would bring more business to the mall. It did the exact opposite. Now the mall is dying. Dick's Sporting Goods robbed this mall. It was fine where it was at. It's funny that the Sears at Boulevard Mall bailed before the Sears stores in Eastern Hills and McKinley Mall despite the shittier attendance numbers at Eastern Hills and McKinley Mall. Think about that.
Have you ever filmed former Gottschalks locations? The local one at my mall (Northgate Mall, Seattle WA) went out if business in 2008, it was like a halfass between Sears and JCP.
They're supposed to be getting an LRT stop in the future from what I hear. You should see the mess coming across the border in Ontario with the demise of Sears Canada. There will be a lot of small town malls anchored only by Sears that will be in trouble once they close their stores for good in January 2018. Last weekend I went to Fairview Mall and this weekend I went to The Scarborough Town Centre (STC), both in Toronto and both on either a subway line (Sheppard line 4) or elevated rapid transit (SRT - line 3). The clearance process at the STC Sears store was a total mess - it was disorganized beyond belief. Half of the store was being renovated and they dumped all kinds of inventory (still in boxes on skids) from their central warehouse in the taped off renovation zone. There was clothing and shoes all over the floors - it was just a mess. And the worst part is that the executive management is getting a bonus approved by the bankruptcy court while 12000 employees get nothing. Both malls were super busy as they always are in the Toronto area.
Your camera work looks fine. You should consider visiting some of the dying New Jersey malls like Moorestown Mall or Voorhees Town Center in South Jersey which both had Macy's close this year. If the Holiday season is bad more malls will probably be dying.
Moorestown had a fire some time back now is remodeled not dead and look very nice also they remodeled Cherry Hill as well it's sad they let Burlington my home mall go was nice in the 90s bad now Voorhees they said it going to be taken down and homes will be there will be sad to see it go.
I live in South Jersey. Moorestown mall never had the traffic as cherry hill. Remember the ducks in the Moorestown mall. Loved echelon mall in the day. Online retailers have killed the malls.
You need more recognition for the work that you do and I’m going to refer people to you because there’s a lot of people who are interested in this content but can’t seem to find it. But keep grinding on your content because it’ll pay off.
I paid a visit last week since our last visit many years ago (I think 3 at least) and it was just depressing to see what is happening to this and McKinley. Either half the stores have closed or having a closing sale.
hi Anthony the footage is decent yes . . love your work I have subscribed to your channel to support you . . keep the good work up and I'll continue to watch, like an comment on all your exellant vids :-) keep safe out there champ
I'd get my hair cut occasionally at that JC Penney also, is it still on the 2nd floor? The first place your at, that use to be Jenss(before it was Macy's mens) 20+ years ago. Thats the last time I was at this mall. Jenss was a really nice store. Klienhans was another nice store, that I see is gone, and Macy's wasn't there at that time, it was Kaufmann's.
Miss Primrose no. That's the "market in the square" this is in a suburb of buffalo called Amherst. Being outside after dark don't bother me in this area
It's sad what is happening to these malls. If you aren't a high end store or a discounter you are in a bad spot nowadays. Sears and JCPenney were stores for middle class Americans. The middle class isn't doing so hot these days and neither are Sears or JCPenney.
Maryland Man In Florida specifically Miami Pembroke lakes and Aventura Mall don’t seem to be closing in the next decade or two because these malls have been growing and growing it’s almost like an attraction for tourists. And in Delaware were I reside now at least until next year. Christiana Mall is booming although there are two malls so far that have closed due to there location and that would have to be rohoboth Mall (not sure how to spell it) Due to its location. And the tri-state mall due to the fact the area it’s located on is near the highway to Philadelphia so not many people go there plus it’s a bit outdated. But Delaware is probably the most nicest state with a low crime rate besides Miami but the crime rate is high in Hollywood then Pembroke Pines. But as of now there’s a few malls that don’t seem to be closing as of now. But it’s a bit sad that due to technology many people prefer online shopping versus taking their lazy asses to a mall. But outlets malls like sawgrass mills have been booming so I guess outlet malls or outdoor malls are booming nowadays then a regular malls.
Thanks for keeping your live streams up - I keep missing them "live". Must be sad to see a mall where you slowly start seeing the vacancies increase... :(
In Norway, there is almost NONE mom & pop stores in malls.. Everything are chains. Making each mall in this country the same. No matter what mall you walk into, its the same stores all the way..
They've been in a lot of debt and it switched owners 4 times. When food court was taken out its fate was sealed. A lot of the stores that are seen in the video are gone now.
I wish better video of Metro North (and Blue Ridge Mall) in its heyday was out there. That's why it's important to document these before they're lost to history.
Ace, have you thought about getting a pair of camera glasses to stream with? You wouldn't have to worry about security, the footage would be steadier, and it would have a truer pov. Although you would look like a crazy person walking around talking to yourself.
Shopping malls are going the same way as downtown shopping areas went in the 70s. They are no longer desireable and most people prefer to shop either in strip center plazas, neighborhood business strips, or on line. E commerce has been the final straw for most shopping malls.
You should go to Westgate Mall in Spartanburg South Carolina. It's becoming pretty dead and has one dead wing like this. Sears is dead and empty there, look for it to close down very soon.
This was "my mall" growing up and I still shop there from time to time. It was a fabulous shopping experience until about 7 years ago and I suspect it is a victim of online shopping. Very sad to see these changes. Getting rid of the Food Court was a huge mistake - I doubt that Dick's Sporting Goods has been a big draw. Makes me sad. Miss the days when it was a fun place to shop.
Congrats on the million! Look at the parking lot, that's a clue. It looks like there's a labelscar under the Macy's one. Brutalist - there's a word that makes my skin crawl, literally built to be fugly. A Kwiky Mart in a mall, that's different. Bump, bump, bump, bump, another Sears bites the dust. Thank you for leaving videos up, for some reason live streams no longer work for me. Even ended live streams don't work until 12+ hours after the stream ended.
People who are saying this mall doesn't look that bad or they know malls that are doing well don't seem to understand that everything in the economy from my experience happens in waves. Malls like this are just sad or troubled malls. They aren't dead yet. They could end up as dead malls. I know a few malls near me that do well. That doesn't mean it will be like that forever. Especially if the economy doesn't actually recover.
The Macy's Mens Store is closed. The Macy's store is still open, but not what it used to be. Disorganized, poor service and there's a Lens Crafters across from Cosmetics. Very sad. I have loved this mall since the 1960's and hate what has happened to it.
Wow! That place turned into a Book store - I love it! I wonder if 'Hollister' closed down because of several controversies they had. For example, it wasn't a secret that they only hired hot and sexy people. They also got in trouble for posting racist squinty-eye photos that the Hollister's Model did. They were mocking Asian people, and that didn't go well. Anyway, I really like this Mall. I miss seeing Bookstores in Malls and this would be awesome to visit :)
Zynyster I love seeing bookstores in malls as well, hell I miss Borders, and Waldenbooks. I'd prefer the bookstores over the Hollister any day. But then again, I'm a librarian, so I'm kinda biased, lol
+Jennifer - Oh Awesome! Yes, when I was growing up, going to the Malls, I always love just stopping by a Book store and checking out any New Books. Fun Times! And I agree, I prefer any Bookstores over Hollister any day. Malls always have plenty of clothes but hardly any bookstores. Anyway, thanks for commenting! :)
Many retail clothing stores only hire "attractive" looking people. My cousin worked for Abercrombie, and she said they could only hire young, good looking, attractive people.
I have been going to this mall over the years, and was there last month. Definitely a mall on the decline. Once the anchors go, they are probably done.
I have seen malls in far worse shape than this. If it was so bad then you'd probably not have had as much difficulty narrating the video openly because there would be less activity/people.
Malls are dying all over the country because of internet shopping. And the demographic change also. They used to be a gathering place for white middle class people.
Boulevard Mall hasn't been the same since they took out the food court. Also Macy's Men's store used to a Jenns department store.
Jenss was a nice store. I remember it well.
You are exactly right! The food court was a very nice one and made a huge difference in the boulevard mall. I have never been in the Dicks store.
If you get a chance to, check out the Sandusky Mall in Sandusky, Ohio.
This year alone, it has lost two anchor stores: Sears and Macy's.
Thanks for filming this! It was my fav mall to visit when crossing the border... was there the last day Sears was open and am shocked at one of the Macy’s closing
Pretty nice looking mall actually
1. Chains start vacating
2. Nationally branded stores start leaving
3. Local mom n' pops fill in where national chains left
4. Mom n' pops fail
5. Mall fails
The Megan Experience It's a shame mom and pop stores fail. I'd much rather shop at those independent stores than cookie-cutter chains.
I grew up going to this mall with my grandparents
aww, I missed another stream! thanks for posting!!!
Thanks for filming this!!!!
Spent most of my weekends here between '93-'2000. Brings back nice memories (Was a LOT more full back then, obviously!). Thanks!
Nice mall, the parking lot looks quite sketchy, though.
Hasn't been the same since the days of Suburban Lanes right next door.

Is this the downtown Mall? I remember in the 1980's locals say "Don't go to that mall after 3pm. Too much violence." It was risky to go there.

I don't even get why Sears in America is still around. Sears Canada recently announced the liquidation of all stores.
Sad day when you see a convenience store in the middle of a mall
Not true - Pittsburgh's most successful mall (which is anchored by a Nordstrom and generally has high-class stores) has one.
Man In Magenta Wig Robinson also has a small one as well and it's doing just fine.
Thanks for keeping your live streams up - I keep missing them "live". Must be sad to see a mall where you slowly start seeing the vacancies increase... :(

Yeah the title of the video is pushing it a bit.
Abandoned PKB clickbait
I grew up in buffalo and believe me, this mall is nothing like it was in its glory days.
If you went now it’s a different story. Growing up with this mall it’s dead. Stores shown even in this video have closed. It’s really sad
They've been in a lot of debt and it switched owners 4 times. When food court was taken out its fate was sealed. A lot of the stores that are seen in the video are gone now.
This mall is by and its a very nice mall some store have left while other come in
any mall that looks like that is good with me.
It can be worse, you can go to the main place mall downtown
Good video. It is sad that the malls are going out of style. I used to go to Metro North Mall in KC Mo. Its gone now.
Really nice mall
You should go to Westgate Mall in Spartanburg South Carolina. It's becoming pretty dead and has one dead wing like this. Sears is dead and empty there, look for it to close down very soon.
Make that two dead wings lol my bad
and that is a much nicer mall than we have here
This is a great Mall
This was "my mall" growing up and I still shop there from time to time. It was a fabulous shopping experience until about 7 years ago and I suspect it is a victim of online shopping. Very sad to see these changes. Getting rid of the Food Court was a huge mistake - I doubt that Dick's Sporting Goods has been a big draw. Makes me sad. Miss the days when it was a fun place to shop.
HD PLEASE! or even 2k, or 4k
oh, it was streamed..
Sears deathwatch update: wolfstreet.com/2017/10/10/sears-canada-to-liquidate-close-all-stores-lay-off-12000/
Nice mall
Still a lot of stores...just no people.
The place to go for Canadian kids to shop!
Just a bit different from when I was a student at UB.
At least it looks clean. Unlike some of the other malls out there.
Lurker1979 because of the location. Amherst is a higher class area. Not a slum area
RIP Sharper Image and Brookstone.
Cool :)
Wow this mall got significantly worse since this was filmed, most of those stores are now closed :(
The out side walls of bouivar mall seem to be dated
This is a good example of a weak mall facing headwinds but it’s still far from dead. Hopefully the exodus of quality stores can be halted.
I wish my mall look like thst
What? They closed Macy’s? Man!!!! Sad
The Macy's Mens Store is closed. The Macy's store is still open, but not what it used to be. Disorganized, poor service and there's a Lens Crafters across from Cosmetics. Very sad. I have loved this mall since the 1960's and hate what has happened to it.
Mall isn't dead
DSB Vlogs was just there...it is pretty much dead
Just looking at the run down parking lot with the asphalt breaking apart no wonder people don't want to go into this ghetto mall...
Doesn't look that bad but taking out the food court was a dumb idea
They had a freaking carousel in that food court!! I was so upset when they took it out
Zynyster you're welcome! :)
Many retail clothing stores only hire "attractive" looking people. My cousin worked for Abercrombie, and she said they could only hire young, good looking, attractive people.
+Mike's - Yep, Abercrombie and Fitch was the same way too. That is wild :)
You can hear a VQ in the back ground lol...#carguys will understand
I’ve never seen a Hollister converted into anything
Oh wow, I used to prefer this mall to galleria, but I haven't been since 2008 when I moved east
Covert Mode!
What is wrong with it? There doesn't to appear to be many empty store fronts.
Dennis W All the big stores seem to be going from what I can see
It's constantly losing stores...so it's pretty dead compared to what it used to be
I wanna meet ya man. Always Wana try to support buffalo born youtubers...except for that one with the K
This mall is for sale
Maybe that mall vould put in a giant tiger condifering giant tiger new main wearhouse is presscot ontario canada
Aeropost-al is the correct pronunciation
I have been going to this mall over the years, and was there last month. Definitely a mall on the decline. Once the anchors go, they are probably done.
They need to repair the lot... I bet I would damage my chair in that lot.... The mall is in need of some work on the outside..
The good old days before the plague
I have seen malls in far worse shape than this. If it was so bad then you'd probably not have had as much difficulty narrating the video openly because there would be less activity/people.
Internet killed the Mall. No doubt about it.
The Taste of China is the best chinese in the area!
Malls are dying all over the country because of internet shopping. And the demographic change also. They used to be a gathering place for white middle class people.
When are you going to stop live streaming
This is nothing compared to Century III mall!
Come see another deader side of sears....
This is a dead mall now beside Macy's, Dick's sporting goods and JC Penny's
DICKS i love this mall!
Look like that
That Mall has the same crap commercial music playing as the big box stores...what kind of conspiracy is that??? Got to go vomit!!! :(
