      Not necessarily because this is an Isekai where literally a virgin, anti-social awkward shut-in with no friends gets the opportunity to reincarnate into a fantasy world where everything he wasn’t in the real world, he was able to be in this world. That’s the fantasy part and the male part is that he gets to have money, power, status and multiple women that are all okay with each other and being his partner.

      @@vd8191 no all the shows that you mentioned aren’t reincarnation shows where a regular person in the regular world gets to go to a fantasy world. Mushoku Tensei is different because it’s literally a regular person from the regular world going to a fantasy world. I think that’s the distinction and what makes our discussion accurate without calling every anime a male fantasy.

    The whole conflict was resolved too quickly for my liking. I know that they cut out a lot of manga stuff like how rudues was locked up in his room for three weeks after his dad’s death and that’s when Roxy intervened but with what the anime shows, it feels like characters lacked the genuine emotions they would be feeling in that moment. At no point did Sylphie seem like she felt betrayed for not only rudues breaking his promise but the thing to (even with the addition manga time) immediately marry another woman. A lot of the people in the whole situation just seemed to lack key emotions you’d feel in the complex situation of half betrayal

    Whenever I want to picture myself with a 2nd woman, I always like to imagine my dad's dead, my mom's a vegetable, I just lost my hand, and might also wreck my marriage.
    You know, the typical male fantasy.

      @thegotspod  3 місяці тому +2

      Yeah because every awkward anti-social shut-in, given the option, wouldn’t go to a fantasy land where they have money, power, adventure, magic and multiple women. I guess that’s never ever been a fantasy in the history of mankind or anything…

      @thegotspod  3 місяці тому

      @@Yummynomnom123 yeah we said all that about training and earning it. Doesn’t take away from the fact that he’s a regular person in the real world that gets a second chance in a fantasy world where most things a man would want, a nerdy one at that, are all available to him which allows him to become the person he wanted to be but couldn’t in his old life.
      The ED part and overcoming that is what we mean by “soft core” as in there is an emotional component focusing on love and compassion and etc etc. the fantasy portion is that most women in this world won’t agree that you can love more than one person purely and equally but he gets to have that as well.
      We discuss all this a lot more in our full episode on Spotify which is about 1.5 hours.

    I understand your comments about this being a male fantasy - from the perspective of the main character, it certainly is, and there's been a lot of behaviour that would hardly have been excused, were it not for the author pandering to that type of narrative. I would have very much appreciated more conflict between Sylphie, Rudeus and Roxy, and there's still a chance that may come later. But I would have still liked to see your discussion after considering two points, one of them that the episode covers very briefly:
    - I think there is something to be valued over Elinalise noting that, while she didn't see anything wrong with having multiple romantic partners, she did now value being the only one, now that she was in a monogamous relationship with Cliff. It does bring some nuance to the situation and recognises that for the partner, there is a risk of feeling like their love is lesser when another is also the target of your affection.
    - For one, it is not implied that the same way a man can have multiple wives/husbands, a woman can't have multiple husbands/wives of her own. In the books, this is demonstrated later with a major character. So while I don't think this removes from the idea that this is appealing to a male fantasy, it doesn't close itself off in such a way where it's also misogynistic. The fact that the women seem to be "OK" with the arrangement, is certainly an insufficiency of the narrative that is set up for them, but not of the world they inhabit. There is still room for complex feelings that come and go, relationships that are dysfunctional at times even if they ultimately work, among other things. Maybe we'll se more of that, maybe we won't.
    I also think that the way the world is built flies in the face of the idea that this is an average male fantasy. Without getting into spoilers, we later learn of a version of Rudeus' life that is laid out to him, and where things play out very grimly and he is condemned to suffer for the rest of his life. And this comes into play in a similar way that other moments of the story have also played out: like when Paul and Rudeus reunited after the teleportation incident, and the underlying message was that the world had been changed drastically while Rudeus focused on his own struggle - one that pales in comparison to Paul's desperation. The world exists despite him, and not because of him. Despite Rudeus being the main character and a powerful mage, the story will not always cater to his fantasies, as it robs him of his parents, of a normal relationship with his sister, of parts of his body, among other things. It brings him moments of great pain that he cannot always escape from nor fix, and that is very different of the majority of male fantasies in anime. He is but a cog in the story, and we later learn he's not even the hero of the actual main story that this world orbits.
    And that is why, while there are elements of the story that fall into the male fantasy idea, it's a bit reductive to write it off simply as such. It cannot be equated to something like Love Hina (just as one example), and I wish you had projected your ideas against the broader kinds of stories in this medium.

      Yeah i understand what you’re saying and in the context of this 10 minute clip you’re right. But this is 10 minutes of a 1.5 hour podcast episode. We don’t post our full videos on UA-cam because not enough people watch them to justify the hours it takes to edit and upload a whole episode.
      A lot of the things you brought up about his family dynamic and his relationships with them are things we discussed too in the full episode on Spotify. We just kind of take clips of the whole show for UA-cam since that does better.
      But I think we meant to say that there are a lot of elements of a fantasy or male fantasy in this series because it reflects what a lot of real people feel, sexual frustration, social awkwardness, horrible home life/school life etc etc and if you were to ask those people what their ideal world would be, it would be something like the world Rudeus lives in feel like. That’s all we meant, we didn’t mean to come off as saying that’s all this show is.
      I appreciate the points you made though and I definitely agree with most of what you’re saying.

    rudy isn't the MC tho so it's not as much male fantasy as you think when you aren't the main character lol. well he is of the prologue but not of the actual story which will be explained in season 3 and 4. a girl is the MC and i wont say who.
    also i think im not taking your stance cause ii've read the light novels and with more context and the pov of the side characters which the anime sadly skips. you get more context into what they are thinking. so during rudy confession part you are in sylphies head and during the roxy sleeping with rudy part you are in roxy's head. so while yeah it is and isn't a male fantasy i think it's just written well enough that i can brush that thought out of my head.

    • @thegotspod
      @thegotspod  3 місяці тому +1

      Totally agree! That’s what sets this apart is that it’s actually written pretty well. We actually talk a lot more about it in our full episode, this is just 10 minutes of a 1.5 hour podcast episode.
      And that’s unfortunate that the anime skips over some more stuff that the novel has. We sort of figured there’s a lot more detail in the novel because that’s usually how it goes. Maybe I just need to read those to get the real story.
      Thanks for the comment!

    Horrible takes all around
    The only reason rudeus was living this kind of life is well because he has basically 40 years of life xp at that point
    He almost died to orsted and thought that he was weak in general
    But then he realized that compared to literally everyone else in the city he is the strongest
    This is proven even more when he dueled the demon king and obliterated him
    The two women part isnt pulled out of the authors bum
    Both sylphie and roxy pulled rudeus out of crippling depression and fear
    Plus these kinds of things happen irl anyways with muslims
    So if it could work in the modern age why wouldnt it work in a much less developed age of the world
    Maybe stop being so shallowminded next time

      You fail to comprehend the complexity of the story
      What did the mc lose?
      What has he gained/regained
      What is happening in the world apart from rudeus
      Male fantasies mostly don't have consequences
      Any and everything revolves around the mc , mushoku tensei isn't in that category, the world at large progresses beyond rudeus , he loses a lot of things but gains a lot of things too
      In this way it's comparable to fullmetal alchemist brotherhood
      And you wouldn't say that fmab is an anime that caters to he male fantasy would you?
