I grew up in Long Beach from 1980-1997 then left to join the Army. I will tell you this, for those of us that grew up there, The Queen Mary has and will aways have a SPECIAL place in our hearts for her. It is truly an honor to have a ship like her the last of her kind and all that she did in her service years, docked and resting at peace in a city that truly loves her. We need to do whatever it takes to preserve her for our children to appreciate her and that time in history. When you tour her it IS truly breath taking and worth every dollar. I plan on soon taking my family back there and finally getting a hotel room to experience that as well. Big trip from Michigan!
Do you know that it's my birthday before I am really 38th anniversary celebration party years documenty biography VIP tickets tour guide ghost tour video camera zoomed zoom zone in the past year would be there by side effects of 1984
The queen Mary is awesome I was there yesterday and it is very cool
i think theres 2 or 3 other perserved ships from her era or earlier SS united states is in utter decay but still survives the ss britian i think is still alive and i believe theres one other big ship still around :) takes Nothing away from the ship though that ship is incredible and a peice of history
@dennisescobar8266 you are lucky to have a great ship in long beach wish she was back home in Glasgow
As a war baby (son of a Canadian soldier and my British mother) Mom and I came over on the Queen Mary arriving in Halifax in August, 1946. Still have the landing card.
Awesome
Hi from another 🇨🇦 Canadian! What a splendid memory and memento for you🎉
My dad was an American GI who served during WWII. In 1943 the Queen Mary transported him from NY to Scotland, and it was a magnificent experience for him. I grew up on his fascinating stories of this era of his life and love learning about this amazing ocean liner that was such an integral part of the war effort. I hope I can visit it one day…as it would almost be like a pilgrimage to me! I enjoyed this documentary, and just wish that my dad was still here to watch it, as well.
The old fellow’s description of the piano rampage is superb !
Visited RMS Queen Mary about 10 years ago and snuck past a few velvet ropes to see a few things most tourists wouldn't see. Had an overpriced lunch of second-class oysters, but the service was excellent and the decor made up for the quality of the food.
I am retired from the merchant navy; drove tugboats up and down the east coast of the U.S. and had the opportunity to put the QE-II into dock in NYC a few years before she was retired, as well as the sad task of tail-steering the USS Intrepid on her last trip from Norfolk Navy Yard to the breakers' yard down the Southern Branch. There is nothing sadder than to see a brave old ship gutted for her brass...so glad that hasn't happened to Queen Mary.
I believe the USS Intrepid is a museum ship on the Hudson in NYC. We have the SS United States unpreserved at Philadelphia.
Wow! A lot of art on board! A great film with so much history I sure never knew. Thank you so much for your fine work.
Always wanted to visit the Queen Mary
When it opens again, perhaps you can go.
I will see it this april. One of my stops, open or not.
Thank You for content and greetings from Latvia
I live in Huntington Beach California, 12 to 15 miles by road to the Queen Mary. While in the US Navy aboard USS Chicago CG11, in early 1972 we came into Hong Kong harbor for R&R and there I saw Queen Elizabeth Burned Out and laying on her side. I must say I have seen them both. Thank you for this Excellent presentation, Mark.
The film was released in 1994. It is confirmed with the hommage to the during making of the film deseased Captain John Treasure Jones RD, (15 August 1905 - 12 May 1993). John Treasure Jones was a British sea officer who became a well-known media figure in the mid-1960s following his appointment as the last master of the Cunard liner, RMS Queen Mary.
My family stayed on the Queen Mary in september 2019. She is a glorious landmark of an era and has to be seen if you visit the area. /Best wishes from Sweden.
It's looks like legends tour guide ghost tour New 🆕 1936 50th birthday party anniversary celebration party years documenty biography VIP tickets to be there for a few on interview review and
Ive been aboard twice, the first time on a Halloween. The second time, i rented a room. That first day, i met an elderly gent on the stern. I asked him if hed been aboard before, and he said "no, but I've been under her". He'd been a crewman on the warship the QM ran down!
Get out!!! That's amazing.
Did you gain any other interesting information from the elderly gent?
This great ship the queen mary was built on the river clyde in john browns shipyard on clydebank a town next to glasgow this ship is a credit to the scottish workforce you are lucky to have her berthed in long beach california
Perfect thing to watch on a rainy afternoon. Thanks for the upload!
To us in Poland the Queen is partially known through my several articles written on her from 1986. Poland is home country and Gdynia - home port to our liners, that made our white and red flag recognizable to the rest of the World, and simply loved by many people. The Queen Mary made 1001 Atlantic crossings and alone shortened the war by six months. Our Batory DID carry once a big Syrian brown bear on board - a mascot and a soldier (!) of one Polish troop during WW2. He had military rank of corporal and was called Wojtek (our abbreviation of the name of Adalbert). Now I am Wojciech myself, bearing the bear's full name proudly, liking all bears and well up in the maritime history of Poland, which shall be 105 years long in 2025. All the best to 'Mary', to Long Beach, to Southampton and to Clydebank (important places of the Queen her life), and birthday greetings for her 90 years afloat (26.05.1934-2024) ♍🇵🇱🇬🇧🇺🇲❤️
Incredible ship, Immensely strong, thee finest transatlantic liner ever built. Built by John Brown's at Clydebank masters of shipbuilding, [ built the trio of Cunard Queens ] The grade of steel used on Mary's hull is easily the equal of anything these days. The old adage springs to mind ' they don't build them like they used to ' The workmanship is simply outstanding, When you had a Clyde built hull you had a ship of incredible strength and durability. Legendary service record. Queen Mary is my personal favourite .
Long live to the Queen from her great fan from Poland.
♍👍🇵🇱🇬🇧
Back when they actually gave a crap about the queen mary as a piece of history and not just a amusement attraction.
May we all come together to make sure she is restored.
My Grandmother came over to Halifax Canada as a war bride on Queen Mary.
My great grand parents took the queen mary to England to see England and Europe. The morning it docked my great grand father had a heart attack and died . After burying him in wales she returned back to Canada I had at one time a few thing from the ship the only thing I have is one of my grandfathers trunks that has the stickers from the Queen Mary. This one has a sticker on it saying not needed during the voyage and was put down in storage . She got rid of everything that was his in England this trunk had been left behind by mistake and given back to her on the return voyage is the only reason it for it coming back to Canada .
...Bought this VHS in the gift shop😊
What a well done video. Very informative and professional. The link to your website is excellent too.
Hi, and thanks for this excellent work showing my favourite liner. Actually second only to our 'Batory', that only transatlantic liner ever to carry aboard one Syrian brown bear! The bear was a regular soldier of one of Polish 2nd Corps' troops, with the rank of corporal and the name of Wojtek. Which is my name too. Long live to Her Majesty for her 90th birthday (26th of Sep. 1934-2024) ♍🇵🇱🇬🇧🇺🇲👍 Just to add something of interest - I am the man who 'introduced' Her Majesty to Polish people in 1986. ♍
As stated at 02:34, the ship shown is not the RMS MAURETANIA. That ship is the RMS AQUITANIA.
23:13 this is exactly what’s happening today…. Beautiful areas blocked off and being destroyed and used as storage
Aaaah , The legendary Grey Ghost of WW2 . It was so fast no warship in WW2 warship German sub or torpedos could keep pace with it.
I read in the news while they were restoring her that one of her smokestacks was literally rusted out so much that only the many layers of paint was left.
Yeah true, i read (sorry i dont know where) that all of the stacks are replicas, because the original one suffered from extensive corrosion damage.
I bet if she was refitted out with new engines and made sea worthy people would book up to sail on her in fact I bet the bookings would flood in for the pleasure of experience of sailing in a legend
My brother was one of many chef’s of the ship 😅
At 2:34 the narrator got the name of the ship wrong, the ship shown here is actually the R.M.S Aquitania
Lots of good history 👏 to learn.
Cool thing is it’s a part of history that’s survived and it’s better then being scrapped
Great video 😎👍
Sorry carnival step aside for the true QUEEN! A true legend and in a league of her own
🇲🇽TITANIC A LEGEND OF ATLANTIC 🇲🇽
Thanks for posting, Mark! Believe it or not, I was just looking for a documentary on the Queen Mary the other day!
Some more food for thought regarding Churchill's quote. Think about all the projects Germany had going in 1945 that thankfully never got going. Had it not been for the Queens, some of those projects, like the Type XXI, perhaps even nuclear weapons, might have made an enormous impact.
In that one moment in time we will be we will be free
Power of of three
Really want to visit this shop someday :)
The ship was such better shape under the city council but once they gave it to other parties it just went down hill they should of kept it and the ship wouldnt be such in bad shape like she is right now
The hull is on such a state it might sink. The City of Long Beach has spent too much. It needs stripping out and the interior burning. Then cut the whole thing up for scrap insitu.
@@PreservationEnthusiast they found put that her hull is actually in great shape the only issue was rust got inside and said if she had a problem then there's nothing stopping her but now they are rebuilding her watertight rooms
@@chrysler238 Yes but Long Beach will keep on needing to pay out for repairs for it, and that will only get worse the more corroded the hull becomes. Ships have finite lives in the water. I don't think scrapping it will be far off.
@@PreservationEnthusiast Long Beach did say they won't scrap her but move her to a dry dock in the future also look at the Uss Texas she's getting a complete refurbishment on her hull and she's been abused more than the Queen Mary
End of an era
God Speed "Queen Mary..."
Did they show this documentary on the ship’s tv on repeat?
I am not sure about this
Cool
Should of had 4 funnels instead of 3
That would have been an amazing site
I know i'll get crucified for this cause the name "Queen Mary" is so iconic now but, i really wish it was named the "Queen Victoria" so Cunard would've kept the -ia suffix.
3 is my lucky number
Ahh the ol rolling Mary. I finer ship renowned for making people sick and injured in bad weather.
I’ll never let go Jack I’ll never let go
Love a woman’s heart is as deep as the ocean
Jerry Springer the talk show host came to the u.s at age 5 on this ship.
Some one needs to talk with Long Beach and take the cutting torch away from them they keep changing on Mary they have already taken away of most of the machinery that propelled and made electrical power for this great ship.
LB cut out the most important engineering is what young one and tourist wanted to see.
LB waist lot of money cutting out the heart of this great Ocean Liner 😮.
I get it I totally get
Does anyone know the name of the jazz song used at the beginning during the overview of the art onboard?
Use the Shazam app during the time of the video
What year is this from
Scarlet letter my mom had scarlet fever
wow
It’s small world after all
Lambert the sheeplesslion lambert is always trying
She's actually spent much more time in the Pacific than the Atlantic as of 2022
Very true
What year is this?
I am unable to confirm the date. I apologize
The film was released in 1994.
👀👍...
What people wouldn't give to see her sail across the ocean one mer time I know her engines have been removed I think they should have been left I wonder if the could ever afford to put engines back inside her she would be sea worthy to make one more journey
That music at 08:45 gets quickly irritating to the ear when played longer than necessary 😩😩
The Queen Elizabeth and Normandie we’re both superior to the Mary. Sadly because of the fact they are both no longer around the Mary gets all the glory.
As functional ships, I agree😊 For speed the Mary was incredible, but the Normandie would be my first😊 pick, followed by Elizabeth (as an improved running mate to the Mary).
The Queen Elizabeth was even larger and more beautiful than the Mary.

The ship is getting old and boring for all 3 ships. Just came back from 16 days Cunard. It degraded a lot. food quality and quantity BAD, no lobster. especially at the Lido. Super short handed. It is at the Carnival cruise style. No dance host, no queens room Hostess, no sequence dance, no professional dancer exhibition, 8 kids running around in the dance floor while dancing, etc. will not recommend for this price (we are Diamond on Cunard, not a newbie)
Which ship are you talking about?
Wrong. The grey ghost was olympic
Nope
Olympic is the old reliable, queen mary is the grey ghost
Witches
Queen marry is not that old ship full of ghosts and demons? 🤣🤣 true story
