To me, there's nothing better than SPOT AND STALK fly fishing to big feeding fish. Especially on the Green River below the Flaming Gorge dam in the NE corner of Utah. You spot the fish feeding, you assess the situation and make a plan, then you sneak in and make that one cast that threads the needle and connects with your target. Top water feeding rainbows and browns in shallow water are some of the hardest to catch. You have to be planful, patient, confident and able to throw a strike, or it just won't happen. In this video, I also include a close up of the size 20 blue wing olive pattern I used to catch many fish on this trip along with a tactical breakdown of a very difficult fish and how I got him to hand. I've never done a tactical breakdown before so let me know what you think in the comments.

Well done ol mate! The tactical breakdown is what separates this vid from so many other "watch me catch fish" videos. This type of video is not only entertaining but really helps people to fly fish better. As you well know, flyfishing has so many variables that need to be taken into account. Thats a big reason as to why I love it! The challenge, the active hunting of these beautiful fish. To my mind there is no greater satisfaction than fooling a large trout (or permit, tarpon, Etc} into takiing a fly that hopefully you have constructed yourself. Keep the technical explanations coming because you are passing on important skills and knowledge to our future fly anglers and honing the skills of the old ones. Regards Greg
That’s how it’s done right there folks!! Excellent job and thanks for taking the time to educate us on the details of what you saw and the approach information. What a beautiful location as well. Enjoyed every second. Heck my heart was racing! Thanks for sharing!! As always keep on flyfishnit!!
Man I really appreciate you checking out my videos and always leaving the positive comments! We need more encouraging people like you in this world!
@@flyfishhunter Anytime!! Great videos deserve credit and your videos are amazingly well done. I appreciate every bit of hard work that you put in each one for us to view, enjoy and learn from. Keep up the great work! Stay blessed!
Great video, I'm a recent follower here and on Twitter, really enjoyed your tactical review. I've been fly fishing for over 30 years and mostly in the high Sierra's in California. As I get closer to retirement I'd love to fish Utah and Colorado. Must be nice having a stream just a few minutes away from home. Looking forward to seeing more of you outings and hope to see you on a stream in the future!
Hi John! Thanks so much and hope to see you as well!
The tactical review was great!
First video I've seen on your channel, and it was great! The tactical review was spot on. Much appreciation from another newcomer to the sport.
Cool! Glad to hear it! Great you are getting into the sport! It can change your life!! Have a great time and I'll see you on the next one!
Love your vids, been fly fishing over 40 years and never watched anyone plan out their approach as you did then fully explain your tactics and reasons. I would watch more of these. Great job!!!
Good to know Craig! I appreciate the feedback!!
Interesting about the browns. Caught rainbows below the dam on scuds, Cutts and brookies on dries further downstream back in the 80s. But no browns though I knew they were in there. I heard a story about two large browns clamped down on a small rainbow floating down the river.
As one of your first 30 subscribers, I always look forward to your videos! You tactical review was almost a repeat of your live commentary with the some would say small and I would say large details of why you approached the fish and successfull catch. To be able to cover the catch twice was both entertaining and educational. Only years of experience can produce that knowledge to myself... A beginner. I really watch your casting techniques and thank you for the modest presentation of a bad ass fly fisherman's beautiful day!
Brian I must have missed your comment. Thank you so much for the support and hope you are enjoying some fun days on the water. Tight lines my friend!
Tactical review is awesome! I'm always learning. Any serious angler knows that we don't know everything! Thanks!
Love the tactical review - new to fly fishing and it helps me learn!
Cool! Glad it helps Jake and thanks for checking it out!
Your explanations help me learn as well!
Good job, this is what people new to FF need to learn from. not too much, not too little talking. I love the fishing here in Utah ! Love that last fish, adrenalin bump then boink... it gone. Then gotta come down from the rush.
Glad you liked it!
Also, the “tactical review” was fantastic!!
You can do those in every video if you’d like.
I think this might be my new favorite fly fishing channel.
Great to hear! Appreciate the positive feedback Truth Seeker!!
Liked the tactical review the best. Seeing the red line editing was so helpful. Also glad to see you instructing us on the time you waited to let the fish get comfortable again...Great instruction!
Thanks so much for the feedback Dan and glad you found it helpful!!
Great vid! I really liked your tactical review and agree that it would make a great addition to your future videos. I’m subscribed to a number of fly fishing channels, and none of them are doing reviews like that.
OK thats good to know! Thanks so much for the feedback!
@@flyfishhunter it was really well done!
Great video, I fished the Green for 25 years. So many great memories and big fish. No longer live in the west ,I need to make a trip back to the green in the next year or so.
Yeah you should definitely do it! You will love it. It's always fun to go back to a place you haven't been for a long time.
Stumbled onto your video somehow and I’m glad I did. This is the style of fly fishing I prefer, tired of all the bobber angling videos.
Cool JC! Glad you came across it!
Amen! Or the hopper, copper, dropper, flopper, mopper, stopper videos.
Totally enjoyed the after action review. It'd be cool to see a compilation of some of your previously filmed fishing scenarios compiled into a video with an AAR of each one.
Best tactical breakdown I’ve seen!
Thanks so much! Hope you got some good info out of it!
This is awesome bro! Love the tactical. I want to fish the Green now!
Awesome explanation. Beautiful place. Like the fly too, I’ll have to tie some up
Yeah you will do well on it! I tie it in sz 22, 20 and 18. Tiemco 101's
Another killer video. Dude I will take you up on those used streamers!😂. When I get up that way. Great editing again brother. Snake charming the whole way too lol. Glad to see you getting after it.
Haha don’t worry about the break offs you outsmarted that big one and that’s what it’s all about keep the vids coming may you have many more fish like it
Thank you so much!! Hope you have many more like it as well!!
Always good to see techniques to help me be better at my hobby. Also I like seeing the fly’s you are using. Thank you for your videos.
You bet Justin! Glad you it was helpful!
I like the tactical reviews.
I feel your pain. I lost a 20" fish this morning at the net. Great video. Do more of those.
Oh man! Sorry to hear that! But at least you hooked into him! Nice job!
Tactical information is always appreciated 👍 And your filming and editing is top notch.
Thank you so much Charles! I really appreciate that and glad you found it useful! Tight lines my friend!
Watching this video of yours love it you sir are a top notch fly angler I enjoy how you explain and how you catch the fish you target. Great video sir great video
Man I really do appreciate it!!! Comments like this keep me motivated to do more! Thank you!
Yea , it’s good and different .I enjoyed watching the hunt.
Great technical info. Awesome video quality. Thanks. Saludos from Chile!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I really enjoyed the video and narrative. Beautiful fish too.
love seeing your approach and angles--please krrp it up!!!!
Thanks Chris!! Appreciate it!
Great video, thanks for sharing.
The tactical piece is fantastic, please do more of those.
Cheers!
Cool. I'll try to incorporate it in again.
Like the step by step process
Appreciate it David! Thanks for checking it out!
Awesome video! Do you also cover fly tying and material such as the one used in this?
I'm trying to add more information about the flies I'm using in the videos but I really don't cover the tying. The two channels I like the most for fly tying is Charlie's fly box and the feather bender. Check them out!
THe tactical review was sweet. Can you show us more detail on your flys as well?
Love the Tac Review
Thanks Robert! I appreciate knowing that!
great stalks!
Great video content and great explanation of your thought process on that fish. Your video work is excellent as well! Keep it up and glad I found it. Just curious…I see your fishing a Trout LL and possibly an older Winston? Mind giving a little breakdown of the gear you were using in this video and others? I always find that interesting as well. Thanks!
Thanks Shane! Yes, first and 3rd fish was with a 3 wt Sage Trout LL with a Sage click 3/4/5 reel. Middle fish was on a old Sage SPL 2 wt with a Sage click 3100 reel. Hope that helps and glad you liked the video!
Yes! Thanks for the new video. Btw, did you mean to title the video ‘Spot and stalk’?
Yes! I just caught that and corrected it. Thanks so much for letting me know and for being one of the very first to view it!!
New to your channel, the breakdown was wonderful!
Please! I am the only fishin person in my family, so need more knowledge Please
Keep fishing Michael. The knowledge will come and enjoy the process! Tight lines my friend!
Just found your channel in my suggested vids. Good job.
Might come up and fish this after a scheduled trip to Dolores, CO in late Sept.
Any campground recommendations for the area?
Heart breaker losing that trout after that long battle. More tactical reviews please.
Great hook-ups?! great work!
Thank so much DS!!
nice work
Thank you! Cheers!
Amazing video i know it takes alot of work
Wow, it really does! Just the editing takes me about 1 to 1.5 hours per minute of video run time. Thanks so much for the support!
Great Video! I see there are signs and trails on the riverbank. Is this part of the river accessible by foot or only a boat?
Hey Gene! Yes the entire A section from the dam to little hole is accessible by foot. There is so much boat traffic that I think it's nice to pick some pieces of water apart on foot. Hope that helps!
Beautiful... absolutely beautiful!!
👍👍👍👍
Thank you very much!
To bad you didn’t land that last one. I was looking forward to seeing how big he was
One of the best fly fishing videos on the internet?
Well done 👍
Thanks for checking it out River Right! Hope all is well on your end!
What rod are you using in this video? Great stuff!
I believe that was my Sage 2 Wt SPL 282-3. It's a little underpowered for those fish. I recommend a 3 or 4 weight on that river.. Right now I'm using a Sage trout LL 3 weight which is really nice.
What type of sunglasses are you wearing?
Love the tactical review! What did your Monday Morning QB have to say? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Secrets😳
You would do better if you fished Tenkara and not with the reel also known as the easy bake oven for fishing.
Easy bake oven for fishing? Okay, that's a new one!
You’re very obviously tactical fly fisherman give me a spinning rod and a warm now or wait fish on
