Camping is YOUR therapy. But your videos are MINE. Paul, I cannot thank you enough for your videos showing up when I need a serious distraction from paperwork and class stuff.
I carry a hip flask full of Jack Daniels & a pipe loaded with tobacco, so if everything goes t*ts up, I don't care.
Same, only my pipe is loaded with ganja!👍🏻😉
😃
@noelwallace5257 whatever works.
Only watched 57 seconds and I've spotted the best thing on the table. My down jacket is about 50% tenacious tape!!!
Oh yeah, Victorinox Swiss Army knife, the original and definitely the best. Super sharp and useful. Everything they make is such great quality.
Ha ha ha 🤣 That's what I like. How at times we have bad experiences but when we look back we can laugh at them. 👍💪🤠❤🙏
I've never seen those magic cloths before! Great bits of kit. They'll be great for cleaning bowls on camp. Thanks Paul 👍
I think they were first designed by Wysi Wipes, those are biodegradable and I even use them as toilet paper. Honestly very underrated piece of kit.
See them in some ration packs, notably the Canadian military. Apparently it's a popular wind-up to tell new recruits that it's a breath mint. 🤣
@@cruachan1191 😆
@@cruachan1191 but if you swallow it you'll probably die in minute(s) from suffocation
In the ‘80s I put together a small but comprehensive kit, including the mini Lofty Wiseman book, under my car seat, for emergencies. My garage was burgled, the Police recovered my kit, and I was carefully interviewed by a DC and a WDC, I think they thought I was a ‘sleeper’. The DC said, I wish I had a kit like that..
Memo to self, check the contents every year..
You emergency headlamp is my only headlamp! I love the low weight and teeny size and it's bright enough for my needs. I also loved those compressed cloths, not seen those before! But if I want to know the weather I'll just look outside the tent!
Great pocket size stuff. Speaking of pockets, your pockets are like Mary Poppins carpet bag!!
I've a similar mug stove set up and the same sea to summit cup but I fit the cup in the bag on top of the mug lid, nips up securely and keeps it all together
some great little pieces here - i liked those orange rubber ties, they are very handy indeed, 👍
Great choices, Paul! Always nice to see your view on gear. I just added some of your recommendations to my kit for my coming multiday Hike in the Atlas Mountains next week. Thanks!
I use a Victorinox Walker personally, it's bigger at 84mm but also has a saw which is occasionally useful if you need to cut an emergency tent peg or repair a pole or even a crutch/walking stick. Also one of my most used bits of kit that I never expected to be (got it free with something else) is a Trespass Drip Clip, a little microfibre towel in a bag with a carabiner. Lives on the strap of my rucksack and gets used for wiping off sweat (or rain more often in Scotland!), cleaning sunglasses, as a heatshield from hot pot handles, drying morning dew off my tent and dozens of other things.
I do use a huntsman which is far superior but not something I could get away with carrying everyday here in the U.K.
@@PaulMessner The Huntsman is UK legal carry, as most SAKs are. Anything under 7.62cm/3" cutting edge and non-locking is legal.
There's a good guide on the UK Gov website, I'd post a link but UA-cam tends not to allow that.
@@cruachan1191 They're legal EDC here but there are places where you may not carry any blade whatsoever either by law (in the case of all educational institutions) or other regulations i.e. pubs, clubs, sports venues etc.
The good thing about Swiss Army knives is many of the parts can be replaced, even the spring for the scissors
I used to be like you...lots of little items spread over multiple pockets. Two problems with this...(i) I could never remember where I stored things and (ii) bulging pockets! I then got a chest pack (a Helikon Tex Numbat that does not clip to the front of my backpack but is independent thereof) and life got better. All the little items are stored together and no bulging pockets. Also handy if you have to ditch your backpack in an emergency provided you also keep a few "survival" items inside.
Great video Paul! Interesting to see what smaller items and gadgets that you take with you on your walks! Thanks for the tips!
Always a pleasure watching your videos 👍👍👍
Absolute love your channel Paul been watching now for about 2 weeks I've already been kinder scout wild camping and going again in another couple of weeks thanks buddy 👍👍
I’ve got a Petzl E-lite too as a back up, great it has a whistle built into the strap. A few small items I like to carry are ear plugs, a midge head-net, a Silva Ranger compass, Lifesystems whistle and a Piezo ignitor.
Great choice of tiny little helpers, Paul! I own some of your presented items as well. In addition, I always carry a mini RovyVon Aurora flashlight. Weighs almost nothing, is very bright and can also be attached to a baseball cap instead of wearing a common headlamp.
I have a very similar set of gadgets and gizmos. From the Leatherman Micra (rip) and an almost identical carabiner, to a mini pot and stove setup. Always good to see what others carry 😁
ha ha - Paul I carry so many of those things as well! Tick removers, the head lamp I have had for quite a few years now, the things to make a brew. You have given me ideas of what else to add to my little 'EDC' collection. Thank you
Great and timely video as I take a break from working around the house.
Great choices and handy tips Paul. Thank you. George
Always enjoy your videos Paul!
How funny you should do this one now. I was only yesterday wondering where your wind master doofer was and what it’s called. Kestrel 3000. Thankyou for popping up!
They are some cool gadgets Paul. Great video. 👍🏼👍🏼
I like the Glow Rhino Tritium Key fob to help with finding anything it’s attached to in the dark. Super helpful for keys, etc.
I carry on my key ring a Niteise Doohickey. Never thought I’d ever use it, yet seem to use it every day!
Got to love all the little bits we carry that can make a huge difference. I always make sure I take ear plugs too, but rarely use them, just great to have in really high winds to help with sleep. Also a lightweight merino wool hat, as I pull over my eyes to keep light out in the summer months
my ear plugs live in the pockets of my tent , never need to check if i`ve remembered them
@@waynus2021 good idea that. I rarely ever wear them, only if winds are crazy high and unexpected
@@thebikepackingadventurer neither do i , i quite like the sounds of the outdoors at night , but the earplugs are there IF i want them and i haven`t had to think about it , i have set up in woodland before and enjoyed the screaming of monkjack deer for a while.........for a while before they got on my nerves after about 3 hours!!! lol
@@waynus2021 they always sound like they are inches from your tent and screaming like they are being killed 😂
I’m a fan of the Victorinox small pen knife. One of these is always with me, it lives on my bunch of keys. Used daily. (Safety warning… don’t accidentally pull out the knife blade and use that without looking when you want to file your nails!)😂
My favourite gizmo that I use is the Fenix CL09 mini lantern, not much bigger than my thumb and quite powerful. Cheers Paul 👍🙂
Nice gadgets. Been looking for the original petzl e lite with the retractable head band for so long. Nearly impossible to find. Thanks for the showing.
I didn’t even know that the coin sized compressible towels existed until now. Game changer for bike-packing!
Fantastic as always, hope you and Jo have a good en in Italy. 🤙🏼
Brilliant Paul a great look at some useful gear mate....I always struggle with power banks and always on the look for something small but powerful.....cheers Paul all the best marra 😃😃😃😃🏕
Great video I like the cup I'm thinking of buying one, hope you and Jo have a great time in Italy thanks for a great video 👍
We’re loving it thanks Andrew
Great video Paul!
Some great ideas, thank you
Hoped tick tool would be mentioned. 👌 most important bit of pocket sized kit
My number one is the Tiny pump!!!!
Nice Stuff And I Love To Have A Barbecue Cafe With Country Store, Western Store, And Sports And Outdoors Store.
I have the same Victorinox knife. It's my EDC and being tiny it's safe to use it in public or at work without causing anyone any alarm. Only downside is I'm on my third one now as they're easy to lose!
Nearly got me a petzl a couple of days back after watching this. Got to millets, picked it up and then noticed the nebo micro. It's basically the same, however, it has a clip on it to attach to a baseball cap = game changer
Getting back to your old self hopefully, take small steps, one at a time Paul, I know it'll take some time but I've been where you are & you'll get there.
If you go for the Victorinox manager, it's the same size as yours but you'll have a pen and a philips screwdriver. But you have to choose between toothpick and tweezers (comes with both).
Love that silicone cup
Just back from Bologna, but travel is no fun anymore with airport nonsense Some funky EDC
My favourite pocket item is a Leatherman Micra. Same size as the Victorinox, but it has better scissors and a bottle opener!
They are bigger, not better !
Knipex Cobra XS….tiny but incredibly handy. 👍
Hi Paul, just started watching your ruff today and Subscribed, keep up the good work. FINTAN (Ireland)
Stuff not ruff
I carry some little cotten balls in a sealed bag to use as dry tinder with a fire steel. 🔥
Perfect video for stocking fillers. Cracking content but I'm sure Mr Wardle won't want reminding about his keys 🤣
I would’ve added a Snow Peak Hot Lips to the mini cooking/brew kit then you don’t need the cup!
Paul :
I learned something the other day .
I was watching Jim Baird Adventurer the other day.
He was out Canoeing all day , it was 10pm when he arrived at his campsite so he got something to eat and went right to bed .
He was so tired he left his Jetboil outside .
It rained that night at 3pm.
When he got up to make coffee his Jetboil was flooded !
The jets to pump the gas were plugged !
It was totally destroyed !
If a pro like Jim can destroy his Jetboil ,
then it can happen to a couple of novices like me and You !
So my advice to You is
Take Your Jetboil inside at night !
Jim was in Canada, where he could build a camp fire to make coffee and cook on .
For You it would be more serious ,where You are not allowed to have an open fire by Law !
Good Luck
Mike
Definitely Maybe worth having those purification tabs 😆
Great tiny gadget reveal! I didn't realize there was even a 350 ml pot. That would be more like an espresso shot than a full brew. lol I will say that if I were to carry a very small lightweight alcohol stove, I have a cheap fancy feast cat food can that I emptied and just punched holes (with a paper punch) around the lid in two rows offset. It does not require a pot stand of any type and your cup sits directly on it, but a piece of foil would probably be recommended for a wind break. Rather than the Petzl (which is really cute) I have one of these that I found on Amazon. It glows in the dark which is awesome! Sometimes I need a hand held light to look at the ground a little more closely if night hiking or need to see the terrain better. Its super tiny and rechargeable - ( RovyVon Aurora A8x LED Keychain Flashlight, 650 High Lumen XP-G3 Super Bright with EDC Mini Size, Micro USB Rechargeable,10 Modes)
An espresso shot is 25ml lol so it would be 14 espressos.
@@simonh6371 It was kind of a joke, like hiker midnight isn't actually midnight. I don't know about you, but having a good coffee in the morning is essential. I'd have to make it quite a bit stronger, we can call it a "hiker espresso," to get a proper caffeine boost with a smaller pot like that. Everything is bigger on trail. ; )
Some good little bits there. Apple key ring thing 😖 😖 we NEVER speak of it.
If you had some tactical pants you could carry lots more 😂 👍
What a fab intro. Ta for vid.
I brought a Knipex cobra xs, it's so tiny it fits in the watch pocket of your jeans and is excellent for grabbing hot things and losing nuts.
This is why I like it when autumn rolls in and it’s warm enough to wear a jacket for the extra pockets!
Those tablet expandable towels aren't biodegradable, but they do make great tinder for your fire... Once you've used it a few times and it's torn apart and hard to use again, just stuff it in your pocket to be used as fire starting material...
Leatherman skeletool.
Hey Paul, I’d be very keen to see a video of you comparing the Garmin with the iPhone 14’s new Emergency SOS service. I haven’t seen anyone else comparing these two, Apples new service looks very exciting!
I don't empty my pockets out at airports. I wear a travel gilet (vest) and have all my stuff in the pockets. I just take it off, out it in the tray walk through the scanning screen and then put it back on. Saves a lot of messing about. I do have to take out the phone and separate it out though. If I don't wear a gilet I do the same with a sling bag, fill it with all of my gear. I really don't like stuff in my pockets, especially anything that will stick into me, keys etc. When I hike I do the same, I carry a small sling bag which never leaves my should and carries all of my emergency gear.
Amazing Video
Camping is worse than motorcycling, unfortunately I combine both, but I do like my gadgets😆👍
I think I need a GPS great pocket kit
Thanks.
My grandfather was an officer and always said that the way to remove ticks was to use a burning cigarette butt
We’ll all take up smoking then 😂 😂
Good Watch
Ever seen the American benchmade knives? I have the bugout . Bit pricey but ultra light and tough at about 50g and has a ridiculously sharp blade.
Very nice I see you using DJI Mic now
Those clothes look good
I don’t always use it mate. Depends on the video. Quick filming yes 👍🏻
@@PaulMessner ah gotcha
It’s good though I used the recorder only for bad weather once in pocket of waterproof then synced up after that was fun
Great bits of kit there
You come up with fun ideas for videos
@@PaulMessner do you use a more professional mic for main recording
The problem we have is adding weight of filming kit lol I’m waiting for the new Insta 360 x3 to arrive and already using the new drone it’s light but adds up on our little legs lol
The one thing you really need is that little string. The rest is all gadgets for fun.
Paul I've been carrying coffee, sugar, in little plastic pottles, and would like to try something different, something that takes less space when only half full. Zip loc bags I don't quite trust, I am struggling for ideas and welcome your input. Best wishes, Andrew,
I take an inflatable Camode with a large plastic liner to do my number 2 in as I don't like digging a hole out in open. Sorry abit gross but very useful.
I am a sucker for small pocket gadgets so really enjoyed this video. I always have the Victorinox knife you showed but have since replaced it with a Leatherman Squirt PS4…. Check it out, a great tiny piece of kit! Really liked your mics 👍🏼
I love my PS4. Handy having the pliers and scissors.
@@ricker76er Handy until the spring on them breaks and you find you won't get one back if you send it in for warranty repair/replacement, instead they send you a Micra. To be honest the scissors on the Squirt are wank anyway, so much blade play they will not cut through fine stuff like hairs, threads, plastic bags etc, as well as not being capable enough to deal with thicker stuff like paracord etc. Since the scissors on mine broke I carry it in combination with an SAK with scissors, today I'm carrying it with the Climber.
@@simonh6371 good to know.
@@ricker76er Like I said I'm keeping mine and do EDC it sometimes as the pliers are very handy and it's very compact but the scissors are it's weak point.
Another great video,great ideas as always,is that a vapour-rise jacket ?.
I always take a hip flask with rum & a small pipe so I can relax with hashish …it goes well with nature after a hard grind hiking
You can carry your cook set in your hoodie hood.🤷🏻♂️
Wow that tick sqeezers good, I've never had a problem but there is always a first. I've trodden on a red ants nest on top of a tor in Bodmin. F**k did they attack. And not one or two. Really painful experience. 👎😫❤🙏
For women, a reusable pee cloth for when there’s no toilet and you’ve got to squat. No more drip drying and it doesn’t retain odours even after multiple uses. Cleans with water.
There are also urinary devices like the PStyle so you don’t even have to squat! Do bring a lattice bit of camp soap or bar soap to clean the cloth every day or so. They do start to smell.
Yes, I LOVE my Kula cloth. Have one for backpacking, one for day hiking and one for car camping!
Hi Paul have you tried the Sea to Summit XBrew ? I've been using it for a few weeks now I think it is fantastic better than my Aeropress
Nah. Never had to empty my pockets at Italian passport control.
Seem's like Paul has never been on a flight before...You can't take a bottle of highly flammable liquid fuel for an Alcohol stove on a flight, and you certainly can't take a knife, even the Classic SD, on a flight! The lighter is likely to get confiscated too...Buy your fuel and lighter when you get to your destination, as both are extremely cheap and easy to find in Europe. If you must have a knife, buy a cheap one out there and leave it behind when you fly back or it will only get confiscated anyway. A USB-C rechargeable Mini Flashlight is a much better lighting solution than the Petzl E-Lite. The E-Lite weighs 28g on it's own and considerably more when it's kept in that red shell case. The Mini Flashlight only weighs 12.57g and isn't much bigger than a AA battery so it can slip into even the smallest pocket or you can hang it round your neck on a lanyard. Also it offers far more power (up to 400 lumens), more lighting modes (4 different white light settings for the front beam, and on the side lanterns...solid white, flashing white, solid UV, solid red, flashing red, and red and blue flashing), and much better battery life (up to an hour at 400 lumens, 2 hours at 300 lumens, and 32 hours at 21 lumens). It's also much cheaper than the Petzl...Only £7 on ebay!
Paul, I don’t think you have any pockets left to hold any other bits of gear. Lol personally I can’t stand having stuff in my pockets though.
💖💖👍
I know this will seem really really pedantic 😄. The lighter you have, adjustable flame? I ask cos I am smoker, and I always go for lighters with a flame adjuster 👍
Some do and some don’t. The Soto torch I use is the best I have. Wind proof and has never let me down.
LOL, the cup an stove in your hip pocket. You do know there are things called backpacks.
Hi Mate, the pot and the burner dosn't work without a pot stand.
Where's the custom windscreen for ur alcohol stove?
I have a sleeveless jacket full of pockets for that -- just take it on and off rather than unloading every time you change your clothes. weighs a couple of kilos though :-(
Hi,
Like the compressible cloths can you tell me their trade name or where they can be purchased please, magic. For a first aid kit.
Just follow the link in the description to the product on Amazon.
You'll have to look at the new Garmin device
Zap-It Mosquito Bite Relief.
Which region in Italy, may I ask Paul?
You can swap out the toothpick for a ferro rod
Hope I’m not stuck behind you at the airport 😂😂😂😂
