Even his betrayal of Rhaenyra's claim was one done out of a reasonable belief that it was necessary for his family's survival. His warning that the lives of Alicent and her children and grandchildren would be at risk if Rhaenyra was allowed to ascend the throne was absolutely correct. The only option other than asserting Aegon's claim was, as Otto said, to do nothing but hope and pray that Rhaemyra loves her step-family more than she wants the throne and fears their challenge to her claim. He was also right that Rhaenyra becoming queen inherently made the realm a mkre politically unstable place. Regardless of the legitimacy of her claim, that much is a fact given the sociopitical realities of Westeros. In their position, I'd much rather try to make my own fate than leave it in the hands of someone who, at least at the time of Otto's warning, was not acting in a manner worthy of her inheritance and had every politically pragmatic reason to get rid of the competition.
Is it just me that started to find charm and wisdom in otto and started to like him after this scene according to how much black team fan I am or are there others who feel like me?
I don't agree with all of his decisions or everything about his Machiavellian pragmatism, but he is absolutely a wise, respectable, and competant statesman, and mkst of his advice, regardless of how self-serving it could be sometimes, has almost always been rational, sound advice. I think that of all of the characters in the story, he's easily one of the most well suited to the actual business of good governance.
I already know you’re going to get a lot of contrarians and people disagreeing with this video but 😢 thank you for making it anyway. I’m not team black or green (because they both are lost to bitter tragedy) but I love certain characters.
Same. There are big pros and big cons to both sides. The common people caught in crossfire is the only "side" worth unequivocally supporting as far as I'm concerned, which I think was Martin's whole point.
Otto does not support her, Otto was the one who told Viserys "You already have a firstborn" and Viserys was considering that option until he made the decision to present her as his successor. Otto did this because he didn't want Damon as king.
He did support her for the same reason he doesn’t support her now. Long story short, he hates Daemon, he supported her claim so daemon couldnt be the heir. Now that she married daemon he assumes she is just a puppet and daemon would be the true king, and daemon would have him executed immediately, which is partly why he wanted Aegon on the throne. Also, having his own grandson on the throne, which he could ‘manipulate’ (or so he thought) is never a bad thing.
@@NemsaraPremathilaka That is not called "Support" because there is nothing genuine, it is simply that their interests take precedence over the laws and traditions of the kingdom. If Otto didn't care about what happens to Viserys' succession, he wouldn't have given Viserys the idea of making Rhaenyra his successor.
Sir Cole gets to be the hand of the king and he just allowed his son to die because he was sleeping with the kings mom smh that's a piss off hopefully someone reveals that 😢
To all the people who do not understand medieval politics, if Otto Hightower never pushed for his grandson to succeed Viserys, as the eldest male heir Aegon would have been killed or murdered eventually even despite Rhaenyras wishes. This is because a faction of discontent would form with the intention of placing Aegon on the throne. This would happen independently of Aegon and the only way he could avoid it is by becoming a maester and /or taking the black and going to the wall (like Maester Aemon in Game of Thrones, he was in the same position and took the Black so his younger brother Aegon V could be king). Otto was trying to preserve his grandchildren but ending up hastening their demise.
This succession crisis is the doing of Jaeherys, the Conciliator. Yes, he brought together the Targeryens and Westeros closer in culture. But the Great Council set the precedent that caused this crisis
Jaehaerys did the right thing. You do not understand the peril that the Old King was in. Jaehaerys was made king when his older sister Rhaena was still alive. Making Rhaenys his heir without the Great Council voting would make him a hypocrite at best and a Usurper at worst. It's Viserys who is the hypocrite.
Otto for all the wisdom he is projected to be, never saw a much clearer path. He could have supported Rhaenyra on accounts of Alicent's children aligning with the heir by marriage. No wars, just political dealings. He would have had the Hightower blood sit on that throne in no time along with the might of the dragons on full. Instead, he choose a path where none of his lineage survived. The Hightower that remained are so distant now from Otto's.
Viserys should have never sent Rhaenyra to Dragonstone. He isolated her from court just to keep the peace. He should have also never brought back Otto.
And what would you do if your daughter's son from first marriage took out the eye of your son from second marriage, had they been staying together, there would have been so much bloodshed
He should have loved both kids and all kids equally, if he gave the same love, attention, affection and assurance he gave her to the other kids, they could have turned out better. But he let the love for his first wife affect his treatment for all his kids.
A good man has no favorite children and loves them all equally. Viserys only loved Rhaenyra and didn't give a shit about his other children. In consequence, he was not a good man at all.
@@RaEy22 Apparently you missed Chapter 8 at the dinner table scene at 50:37 (especially 52:38 - 52:56) where he gave that epic speech about how much he loves his family. Or did you just choose to ignore that major point to further your own narrative? "Set aside your grievances. If not for the sake of the crown, but for the sake of this old man who loves you all so dearly!" How Paddy Considine didn't get an award for that scene alone is a crime!
Everything was viserys fault. He initially made her the heir because he was angry at Damon. Then when he finally got the son he had been dreaming about and even sacrificed his first wife for, he refused to name him the heir because he didn't want to look like a fool(im guessing). When the new hand of the king suggested the most reasonable solution to prevent future discourse which was to marry Rheanyra to Aegon, he dismissed it. Finally I don't believe he was naive enough not to know that otto Hightower was planning against rheanyra and was supporting his grandson. I think Damon was right , viserys was so scared of war that he did everything to avoid it even if it meant all hell would break lose after he was gone.
Otto and alicent are truly the only ones to blame for this war. Every life lost is at their hands directly or otherwise. Cole is equally to blame as the ONLY witness to the white stag appearing to Raynera
People in the comments are so stupid it's honestly embarrassing. Viserys mistake was 1) naming girl heir 2) not to marry her to Aegon. But "why did he have sons" Is so stupid. Because in Medieval age people die like ants all the time. Having one kid is very dangerous to his House and could destroy them. It's basic school knowledge, that Noble's have many kids and often 2/3 in Line became the next kings because others Died. I guess people don't have history classes at school anymore ?
@@sophiawilson8696 It was a mistake by having a daughter as heir when he have sons. Of course it was a mistake, that's why so many people bend a knee to Aegon.
Not only that but he was left vulnerable without having a wife and the appearance of a male heir on the way, he had to marry again given that Rhyneara was so young still....but yes, people are very narrow minded and uneducated to boot, some even go as far to harass and hate some of the actors for the things their characters do🤦♀️
I think it’s telling that when they are emotional (both greens and black) they don’t say anything like my brother or my nephew or my uncle unless it’s in a mocking jester they are either Alicents sons or usurpers or by there names letting us kinda know there is no familiar bonds with the greens and blacks two separate families connected to the last true king viseries
He is the King. What if Rhaenyra died. Welp there goes the heir. Also, more targaryens equals more dragoin riders and more options for political marriages. And Viserys was too kind. He wanted a family and loved his kids. He named Rhaenyra and assumed everyone would keep to it when he had a son
Because it's a feudal system and a larger family means more wedding pacts which means more control across the entire land. They're also Targaryens so incest relationships are part of their culture. It's just so baffling to me they didn't make a wedding pact between her and Aegon, but viserys placed her happiness above the decision that would have sewn his house together. It was probably the largest mistake viserys had ever made (despite the major ick vibes from us today lol)
Let's see,hmm... tradition on choosing the next heir. If you were groomed in such culture, you would have done the same or more. He wavered because of tradition.
I gotta say either of these two are bad choices and choosing a ruler because u love them is not smart and aegon would be completely different if viserys made him heir

And he ended his bloodline doing this lol😂
Otto with the transformers star scream laugh for the win
I always remember when i was a kid and starscream declared himself leader of decepticons in Megatron's absence
Paddy deserved to win so many awards for that performance, absolute stand out for season 1
Such an excellent edit
“I wish to see you contented, happy, even.” 😢
Is it just me that started to find charm and wisdom in otto and started to like him after this scene according to how much black team fan I am or are there others who feel like me?
I don't agree with all of his decisions or everything about his Machiavellian pragmatism, but he is absolutely a wise, respectable, and competant statesman, and mkst of his advice, regardless of how self-serving it could be sometimes, has almost always been rational, sound advice. I think that of all of the characters in the story, he's easily one of the most well suited to the actual business of good governance.
Diabolical laugh by Otto 😂😂
I already know you’re going to get a lot of contrarians and people disagreeing with this video but 😢 thank you for making it anyway.
I’m not team black or green (because they both are lost to bitter tragedy) but I love certain characters.
Totally!
Like daemon ❤
Same. There are big pros and big cons to both sides. The common people caught in crossfire is the only "side" worth unequivocally supporting as far as I'm concerned, which I think was Martin's whole point.
Otto’s giggle is enough to burn severely 😂
Great edit😊
Even Otto Hightower supported Rhaenyra in the beginning.
Otto does not support her, Otto was the one who told Viserys "You already have a firstborn" and Viserys was considering that option until he made the decision to present her as his successor. Otto did this because he didn't want Damon as king.
@@JonathanRosario. Then, It is called 'SUPPORT'
Only to spite Daemon. Otto is as much, if not more to blame for the war as everyone else.
I love that he always went out of his way to prove to her that he meant what he said. His actions spoke very clearly.
Vissarys the one true king great heart compassionate family man loved peace deflected war what a character
I feel bad for Aegon. If only alicent raised him as son he would have been much better person.
Her idea of mothering was to hand her son over to whoever told her that they knew better
Viserys also should've raised him as a son.

Shame 🔔
Otto: Is that what you think?
Aegon: I thin...
Otto: IT DOESNT MATTER THAT YOU THINK!!!
Well, apparently, if he proceeded to try to have sons regardless, maybe he did the opposite thing to what he told her.
If they had condoms during the medieval era i am sure he would prevent it.
@@funtv4920 They didn't.
@@_antillas8674thats why he said if 💀yk what if means right?
@@angelavaughn6097 Yes. Doesn't change the fact that he wanted sons.
Wanting a son doesn't make that son heir. Rhaenyra is still the rightful heir.
Perfect casting, Paddy is such a good actor, and the guy who plays Otto plays him very well.
Otto's giggle ❌ dr.connor's(lizard) giggle in Spiderman no way home✅
Good edit
Dang the pic looks so clear right here
To all the people who do not understand medieval politics, if Otto Hightower never pushed for his grandson to succeed Viserys, as the eldest male heir Aegon would have been killed or murdered eventually even despite Rhaenyras wishes. Otto was trying to preserve his grandchildren but ending up hastening their demise.
best series in my life.
Every father’s dream for her daughter. She should be happy, healthy, safe.
Unless that daughter is Helaena. In which case she can go sit in a corner with her bugs by herself.
@@matthewhart9610 or is it what she was destined to do? She is different you know, with all the dragon dreams.
If you pause it the second this video starts playing, its Ryan Gosling in the future.
Lol😂😂😂😂 it's true, your looking through my eyes😂😂😂
Ladies and gentleman let's all appreciate Rhys Ifans. And remember he played the roommate in Notting Hill 😅😂
This makes me tear up. Knowing what's coming in the end.
Otto Hightower walked so Tywin Lannister could run
Otto’s laugh cuts to the bone. Through it even. Ouch.
That Otto laugh always gets me 😂
that laugh from Otto
Otto's laugh is awesome.
Families need to be careful what snakes they let around their family matters
This succession crisis is the doing of Jaeherys, the Conciliator. Yes, he brought together the Targeryens and Westeros closer in culture. But the Great Council set the precedent that caused this crisis
Jaehaerys did the right thing. You do not understand the peril that the Old King was in. Jaehaerys was made king when his older sister Rhaena was still alive. Making Rhaenys his heir without the Great Council voting would make him a hypocrite at best and a Usurper at worst. It's Viserys who is the hypocrite.
Her father loved her unconditionally.
Otto’s laugh 🪦
The casting is crazy they all look like their younger selfs
The acting in this tho. Sheesh
His laugh was hilarious!
He should have loved both kids and all kids equally, if he gave the same love, attention, affection and assurance he gave her to the other kids, they could have turned out better. But he let the love for his first wife affect his treatment for all his kids.
He shouldn’t have recounted that prophecy on his deathbed
Can we appreciate British actors. And a lot of these actors aren’t huge stars either. Great performance from literally everyone
Just shows how much I miss Viserys. He was a good man. Not a great king but a good man, and I'll take a good man over a great king 100% of the time.
That confuses me like you wanted a son you have him name him heir
She the new Supergirl now 🔥
I miss seeing Viserys and Rhaenyra on screen. 🖤
The fabled Couple we all want to be in the shoes of!
Otto and alicent are truly the only ones to blame for this war. Every life lost is at their hands directly or otherwise. Cole is equally to blame as the ONLY witness to the white stag appearing to Raynera
That laugh thou 😂
Tywin needs to show Otto how to handle a young king
I like the adult Rhaenyra, good actress..but the young version was crazy good, damn good...i mess her version so much.
I miss Paddy Constantine ❤❤❤
His laugh was so perfect
Viserys face with half gold mask while wear the crown is absolute perfect attire for a king.
Sorry for my bad english
Young Rhaenyra really pretty❤❤❤
Yeah the show just doesn’t feel as good with the old one. They should have gone with someone prettier to match the young one.
I guess people don't have history classes at school anymore ?
that not Viserys mistake making his daughter his heir, it he trusting those bastards.
@@sophiawilson8696 It was a mistake by having a daughter as heir when he have sons. Of course it was a mistake, that's why so many people bend a knee to Aegon.
Not only that but he was left vulnerable without having a wife and the appearance of a male heir on the way, he had to marry again given that Rhyneara was so young still....but yes, people are very narrow minded and uneducated to boot, some even go as far to harass and hate some of the actors for the things their characters do🤦♀️
Rhaenyra was so beautiful when she was younger.
“I will not live forever” part of me wonders if he knew early on that he’d have an early death, I think he knew.
That laugh lmaoooooooooo
Otto suddenly became just a bit more noble by showing that he was somewhat of a friend to Viserys.
Daemon chilling and laughing in the corner 🌚
Nice quality picture resolution
Great actors tbh
The fact that anyone believed he actually wanted to replace her at the last second like that is maddening.
Her father should have said “earn it”. She sat around and prepared for nothing
Wow...awesome scene. Otto realizing he fked upm
Expectations breathe resentment
I think it’s telling that when they are emotional (both greens and black) they don’t say anything like my brother or my nephew or my uncle unless it’s in a mocking jester they are either Alicents sons or usurpers or by there names letting us kinda know there is no familiar bonds with the greens and blacks two separate families connected to the last true king viseries
“Microchips disconnecting the world” wow. It’s the and happening already.
If he truly care for her why would he even make another son ?? But choose her as his succesor it just brew a conflict
I mean you would smash alicent so yeah there’s that.
They should have just married each other.
And then Haelena could have married Aemond.
Viserys was literally falling off the bone and came to the throne room to make it known who was his heir
Viserys the wise❤the kind
Otto's Laugh 😂😂
Viserys was THE KING 👑
After watching Jeffery n Ramsey Otto is a good man
I gotta say either of these two are bad choices and choosing a ruler because u love them is not smart and aegon would be completely different if viserys made him heir
Otto is the picture of clean cut man who is extremely evil underneath.
Those damn Hightower is the harbinger of the fall of the Targaryen.
