That walnut is so beautiful! I'm a novice player and new to electric. I've always admired Gretsch, loved the look, and especially the sound, and the masters that play them. I can always hear these guitars ins song. I finally bought one... A 21 G5427TG in Sapphire Blue. I haven't even been able to pick it up from the shop yet, but the photos are amazing! I'm so excited to play it. I can certainly hear the difference in the two. I was torn on which to buy, but am glad i bought the full hollow single cut. I mean more towards country blues and simply LOVE the sound. Thank you for sharing and demonstrating the differences!

I've watched alot of videos comparing Gretsch guitars at this point.
The 2.25" thickness seem to strike the ideal balance between hollow and focus. It compliments the filtertrons full range frequenzy by not emphasizing any part of the spectrum over others. Can't really think of a more versatile guitar that still brings something unique in it's sound.
    Gretsch is best. 🤘

Thank you. I've been looking forward to this. I love your approach, your comparisons and your playing ability! What would be a good Electromatic Gretsch model that you have played that is would suit an intermediate player (in the middle of incorporating rhythm and soloing) who enjoys playing, blues, classic rock, outlaw country and folk? From these two models I was liking the G5422 better.

Hi dude. All round? The 5422T will fit most styles, a liitle more midrange focussed than the single cut, and overdrives a little more sweetly in my opinion, but still has the Gretsch twang and clarity.

@@blkleblanc I just bought an electromatic 5622 and the pickups felt like a big jump on the pickups in the streamliner range that I tried alongside it. Those felt a lot more like run of the mill humbuckers and not very different from those in the epiphone 335 and ibanez 58 humbuckers that I tried. I love the 5622 I got. It has a brightness at the top end that competes with my tele while having the much bigger lower range that comes with a semi-hollow guitar.

I saw you vid demoing the 3 models including the rat rod and 5622. I really like the clarity and openness of the 5420 series. Do you notice any issues accessing higher portions of the fretboard between the 5420 and 5422? (Is the heel thickness the same?)

Hi there. Nice to hear from you. On these guitars the upper fret access is pretty much the same. It’s not as awkward as a proper pro series reissue, so the fretboard doesn’t stand so far away from the body. It’s not as easy as a players edition, where the neck is dropped right into the body for access. So about in between the two! I’ve never found any hinderamce up to the A on the top e.

If I may ask, and you are still monitoring this post, what strings would you suggest to use with the 5420T model? I also use 10s NYXLs on my 5240T.
My best advice is to get some locking tuners, i have lockings on all my Bigsby equipped guitars.
You can try to lubricate your nut and bridge slots. Don't do too many windings on the tuner peg. Those windings tend to stretch in itself.
And don't forget, Bigsbys are for tender use, not for dive bombs 😎

Hey Mr Chivers, thanks for your clarifications and information!! nice demonstration!! one doubt.. considering mostly same material and electronics, how come they sound different like exactly how you said?!?! 5420 is more open, clear and 5422 fatter and mid rangy? major difference is the body thickness, is this the reason for such difference in sound? I have a 5622, and understand that Board tron will sound different because it is different pickup, but the ones you had compared are same same... please try to explain me this because really difficult for me to get it... you also use same effects, amps, etc, right?!?

Hi there. Thanks for watching. You are exactly right. The size and depth of the bodies makes a difference, as does whether or not it has a Centre block . Think of the difference in tone between a Gibson 175 and a 335? Same thing here. Also a totally hollow 330 sounds different to a 335 where the pickups and bridge are mounted to a Centre block.

Kinda being misleading with the bracing comments
The only thing these 2 bracings share is the name. The 59 trustle bracing gos from the bridge to the neck. The NEW " Trustle BLOCK" bracing gos only inder the bridge much smaller and if the 59 go's up and down ( bridge to neck) the new bracing go's side to side horizontal under the bridge in place of the sound bar bracing that useto be under the bridge. I'm not saying its bad but it most definitely is NOT like the 59 bracing you get in the Brian Setzer Grestchs.

My guitar has what they call center block bracing which is only a small block of wood right under the bridge. You can see it looking through the side holds. It doesn't have a peace of wood running from the back to the front like your are describing. I think you should look through the side holds for this enter block right under the bridge. You may only have the center block under the bridge. It is about 4" X 1/2" X 5" L x W X H

If you have a model with a brace running from the back to the front it is different from my guitar. If you take a flash light and look in the side hole you can see the center block under the bridge. supporting the top and bottom of the guitar. You may have a different model but they look identical and they call my guitar a center block Guitar.

@@damonthegnomeoftonechivers a lot of times Gretsch spec sheets leave something to be desired. Like my Electromatic Bo Diddly. I looked all over and went through old catalogs to find out what wood was used in it. All I saw over and over is mapel neck so I went into the control cavity and sratched away some paint and although I think it's mahogany I'm not 100% sure. I also have a Grestch FSR in surf green and the pickups say "filtertron" I called the store customer service and they just said filtertron. I called Grestch and they didn't know anything about it. Another website said HS Filtertrons but the OHM readings on them are around mid to hi 7s HS Filtertrons are low to mid 4 ohm. I think they are Mega Trons with gold covers since theres no way to differentiate Mega Trons & Filtertrons. Epaphone and some of the Fender pickups have a sticker on the pickups to know what they are. Buying on the used market you just have to take a leap of faith the person knows what they have. Long story short I'm a Gestch fan boy but I wish they were better at the specific on the spec sheet and marking the pick up. Thanks Damon I always enjoy your videos and knowledge.
