@@PixelShaun Bloodborne is probably my favourite game of all time, it's a truly once in a lifetime experience. It's harder than Elden Ring, but the difficulty still feels fair, and I think some of the unique mechanics really raise it to another level above the other souls games.

Judging from your map at the start, you got a long way to go still in Elden Ring. And I really don't recommend jumping between titles mid-playthrough, especially when you're playing Elden Ring (because it has a very different button layout due to the wider variety of mechanics in it)
I would recommend Dark Soul's Remastered though, it has a much slower gameplay formula to the other Souls games so it can be a lot easier to get from the middle of the game to the end once you're used to it. (It has the least build-freedom of the core series though)
Oh and since you mentioned it, the reason having a normal gaming pause function would break the game, is partially because of how the online functionality works, but also because being able to change gear/organize inventory in any of the Souls game would allow you to do very powerful things that high skill PvP players do. (Like using a very light and fast target shield/parry dagger with a ring/talisman that buffs dodging and defenses, until you land a parry and then use a pause menu to swap in a giant 2 handed weapon and damage boosting rings/talismans to suddenly do a huge critical hit with a weapon that puts you in heavy equip burden. The menu explanation pause I didn't even know existed to be fair, so even I learned something from your video which is another cool aspect of Elden Ring, always something to discover.

Considering you have a PSX in the background, you may want to consider King's Field 2 (released abroad as just King's Field). It is Miyazaki's personal favorite game from the studio's catalog. The PSX KF's are very rough, though, so KF4 on PS2 is usually recommended above them.
Otherwise, start from Demon's Souls and work your way through the proper FromSoft Soulsbornes in release order.
For completeness; If you want indie sidescrolling metroidvania/search-action games inspired by Souls, there's Salt & Sanctuary, Tails of Iron, and Ender Lillies. Beyond that, Lies of P seems to be the only major non-FS Souls-like that got a good foothold.

This is my second attempt st Elden Ring and I feel like we're having a parallel journey.
My first play through I couldn't find dungeons, died all the time and got really frustrated with the game. 3ish months ago I rewatched Viva LA Dirt League's video Get Good, and it inspired me to give Elden Ring another go but to slow down and learn how to play. I choose a Samuri build (and happy I did, it's an amazing class for a first time player) and am dual wielding to victory (never thought power stance would be my thing but I love extra attacks over blocking, I can roll or jump out of the way). I've died a lot, lost more runes than it's worth counting but I've been putting in the work and it's showing. I've watched 10's of hours of get good videos, sparred with enemies I'm bad against, exploring ever inch, and having a blast. This game imo is a masterpiece, the way it makes me feel after defeating a Legendary enemy or fighting colossal enemies, it helps me practice emotional regulation (which is good becuase I can get frustrated and this game helps me work through that by understanding death is a feature not a bug), and this is the most time I've spent gaming in years. I could go on but at some point its rambling. I'm excited to enter the shadow lands in the near future.

Welcome to the community, and good luck on your journey. With regard to the pause button, there are two considerations. First, the game is intended to be online, and encourage you to stay on your toes or seek safety before taking a break. Second, the game has a powerful auto save system such that you can quit out at any time and resume from exactly the same spot. People quick enough at using quit out can prevent dying, even from falling off a cliff. Adding pause would probably make that the norm when your runes are at risk and a fight isn't going your way

I don't like magic builds personally and I joke about it with friends, but at the end of the day if its something that gets you to play any soulsbourne game then there is nothing wrong with that. As classic as the "git gud" meme is, too many people make that their entire personality. Great vid dude.

“Git gud” is what happens when you play and want to do better, die? Try again and learn, DS is as rewarding as it is hard and it took me 2 years to realize that, it’s certainly a very unique experience and can be very polarizing when you only play “classic AAA” games

@@milesthe2tailedfox I adore the entire franchise, but a lot of people instead of offering help just utter "git gud" instead of helping people and use it as an excuse to just be toxic. As someone who has played since demon souls, I don't really need that kind of advice to help other than maybe the odd overly cryptic thing that the series as a whole tends to throw at us the players, but for someone who is newer, I have seen time and time again, people just say that instead offering actual advice. Not everyone has hundred's of hours to spare for games and need that help from others to get through the games

The most important thing is SPEND YOUR RUNES!!! Deaths feel much less significant when youre only spending a minute or two max to get back to where you were. Using on levels in yourself and weapons is preferred, but even just spending on random crap like throwables, consumables just to make sure that currency will Eventually become of use. The amount used to level is usually a good barometer for if youre losing a significant amount or not.

I don't summon because the summons make the game, for a Soulslike veteran, trivial.
But, absolutely, summon away, dude, especially as a first-time player. They help you, of course, but it isn't as if you don't learn or improve with each fight.
Eventually, you'll git gud enough thay you yourself will make the choice to try this one fight without summons. Then you'll try it without a shield. Then, without armor. Eventually, you'll catch yourself playing the game with a banana connected to a wire, and you'll be nothing if not proud of that guy who back then decided to jump into the unknown and give the game your best. 💪🏼

Dude, after you get through the majority of the game I recommend checking out some of the great loretubers out there like Tarnished Archeologist. They weave together the hundreds of tiny hints of deeper lore we get scattered throughout the game and weave them into mindblowing analyses that will have you looking at every single item, texture, and color with brand new eyes. I played what I thought was quite thoroughly, but TA was over here making realize I missed a whole world of information with things as simple as the layering of architecture in a single room that revealed multiple in-world eras and how they likely built on each other.

It's really nice to see more people engaging with the soulslike/soulsborne genre, but specifically where FromSoft is concerned, I would operate under the assumption that every aspect of the structure plays into the overall aesthetic whole. Miyazaki thinks and builds like this.
In this regard, the absence of an easy/accessible pause option for the game should be seen as a part of its overall design, the same way death is an actual mechanic of the game and not simply a consequence of failed play.
Miyazaki likes to create a feeling alongside the world he builds. It plays into the holistic experience of the player as they move through it.
Look deeper my dude and welcome to the grind.

Your video was recommended to me, likely because I've been watching a lot of Elden Ring content. In general I watch a lot of Souls content. I enjoy watching skilled players and new players alike.
I have a bit of experience. Picked up Bloodborne upon release having never heard of the Souls genre and had no idea what I'd gotten myself into. I think I got as far as beating both Cleric Beast and Father Gascoigne, but never went back. Played a bit of Demon's Souls remake, still haven't gotten far, but enjoying it.
I finally picked up Elden Ring this week. I'm not far into it, having fun though.
My only complaint so far is there are some critical things I feel should have been explained better or at all. It took me way to long to comprehend how to equip the whistle so I wouldn't need to go to the menu screen to call Torrent. Trying to figure out how to call your horse when in the middle of being attacked so you can regroup is not enjoyable. This is something I'm sure veterans of the genre knew how to do instinctly and was no issue for them. I understand the idea of not holding your hand and see value in it. But for basic mechanics this shouldn't apply. IMHO.

Hey, this is the first time I've seen one of your videos and I saw that you play some JRPGs as well(also a Zelda fan here). I can recommend you a series(it's a turn based series so if you are not into that then ignore it). The series is Trails/Kiseki or you can also say Legend of Heroes. Truth be told it's hard to recommend this series because almost every game in the series is a direct sequel of previous(and by direct I mean like continuing the next game right where you left off the previous one) or at least taking place during the same time frame. It's a series with an over arching plot told through multiple games and multiple protagonists and characters whose stories are intertwined with each other. More than half of the plot is completed in like 11-12 games in last 20 years. Also, people call this series the One Piece of gaming.

I disagree with the pause one… I do believe some controls are a bit clunky but pause button will break the momentum completely

I think the reason they don't have a pause button is fromsoft hasn't figured out how to turn it off for pvp. Of all the things that they excel at, multiplayer programming is not at the top of the list.

important to note that the menu explanation thing is definitely an exploit/oversight and should not exist, however, that design decision is stupid and the game should definitely pause when you are not summoning real players or being invaded

  • @jangofett796
    @jangofett796 2 місяці тому

i do not understand the entire argument with the pause button, one reason i believe its not in the game is because its is supposed to immerse you in the world and make you feel like your in it at all times, nothing will take you out of immersion like a pause button will, it completely cuts out any feelings of fear and panic at moments if you can put a time stop on whatever is happening to think of your next move, that is part of what the entire game is built around your ability to keep your kool in stressful or intense situations so you dont panic when things get ruff
another reason is for multiplayer, a pause button just wouldn't work with any co op or or invasion, so if you were taught to rely on pausing during others times you wouldn't be able to keep your kool while in any multiplayer situations where you cant and you would be a worse player because of it
i do agree there are some menu options that could be worked on and i know everyone always says there should be a quest log for MPC's and i dont think that would be a bad thing to add, even though i disagree that keeping track of MPC's is that hard but it would be fine to put in
glad your enjoying the game though

At this point, tying the lock-on button to the ceter-view button has to be intentional. It's one of the most common complaints, and it persists through the ages from Dark Souls through to Elden Ring.

In regards to the elitists/gatekeepers, it's not even that they have impossible standards, it's that they always argue from the idea that the way they play IS the hardcore respectable way of playing. Meanwhile the actual hardcore way to play would be SL1, no hit, randomiser, ladle as a weapon, no dodge roll and with a shoe on your head, of course if the shoe falls off your head you have to start over - and the people that play like that, are not the gatekeepers. The gatekeepers are just weirdos that want to feel accomplished in playing the game a certain way, but they know it's not actually an achievement, so they have to bring others down to feel better about themselves. It's just pathetic honestly. Like woohoo you completed the game without summons, but you used sword of night and flame, or hoarfrost when it was broken.
They need to put a disclaimer on the steam page or something for new players "IGNORE THE WEIRDOS IN THE COMMENT SECTION"

Oh, and if you want another incredible gaming experience, you've probably heard praises sung about ffxiv (Final Fantasy XIV) for years, maybe thought like with ER that it just wasn't gonna be for you. But I beg you to give it a chance. If nothing else, get the free trial; it includes the entire base game and first two expansions and you can play as long as you want with few restrictions (these being intended to slow down bots), so you have nothing to lose.
Seriously, if you want a game that respects your time and you as a player, that has an amazing community, thats story will have you in tears with both laughter and heartbreak, that will challenge you with difficult but rewarding content, that will ask you 'Has your journey been worthwhile?' and have it hit you in the heart like an arrow - play Final Fantasy XIV.

For the longest time I really despised from soft souls games. I thought they were awkward to play, and unnecessarily artificially difficult. I installed and uninstalled Bloodborne three times, never making it to the first boss. I couldn't beat the first Dark Souls 3 boss...
So when Elden Ring was getting praise on release, I scoffed and then played it out of spite, thinking it would still be garbage. And at first I was right, awkward, artificially difficult... and yet...
I couldn't stop thinking about the world. Couldn't stop wanting to see what was around the corner...
500+ hours later, it's in my top three games of all time. I went on to 100% all of the soulsborne games, platinum'ing Sekiro, even really loving Lies of P and enjoying beating Lord of the Fallen.
I'm hooked on the genre, but addicted to Elden Ring.
The DLC brought back the feeling I loved and began to miss. Of exploration and discovery. Of despair and triumph.
What a game. Then the lore is fucking awesome, as hidden deep in the environmental story telling that it is.

Hey Shaun! My name is Rice, and I am the Lead Developer on an exciting new project called “Echo Realms.” We are preparing to introduce this game to the public, and it promises to deliver a unique blend of gameplay elements inspired by Elden Ring/Souls and the extraction looter aspects akin to Tarkov.
In "Echo Realms," players will navigate a fractured universe, journeying through forbidden realms to collect valuable items and loot. To heighten the sense of urgency and challenge, players will employ a cloaking device to evade a formidable extra-dimensional entity.
We are currently in the early stages of development and are eager to share our progress. If you are interested in exploring our game or featuring it in a video, we would love to collaborate and spread the word about "Echo Realms."

I might get a call on my phone I need to answer, someone might be at the door, might get a delivery, work might call etc. Things in life can and often do pop up while gaming. Limgrave is fun. But wait till you get to near end game, and you'll realize how much bullsh*t the makers wants you to just accept. It was hard, just because. The makers put up impossible attacks that you can't dodge, unless you use exploits to somewhat trick the AI.
Please post another video once you've beaten the "gold" area (not gonna spoil it for you) and progressed beyond that, and let us know what you feel after completing some parts of that area.
I'm nearing the end now, and I'm dropping the game, not becoz I can't finish it (I've beaten most of the bosses in under 10 tries on my 1st ever run, except Radahn with 11 attempts). The end game uses cheap tactics and unbalanced scaling, just to "make it harder". After a while, the game becomes a "waiting" game, instead of "riding the flow" type. Exploration is not fun anymore with repeated content.
The makers punishes you for making it that far in the game, and wants you to ultimately fail and feel defeated. Instead of giving you that feeling of satisfaction that you've come so far, they'll just up the "quantity" of things like damage, groups, and combos, and didn't think about the quality of these things.
It's like they've thrown just thoughtless designs and attack patterns in the late game enemies, and just let the players figure out themselves.
I really hope you can make that video of a review of the game after that area, so we can discuss these design decisions more. Thanks!
