- A wonderful colorized film about horse-drawn and electric trams in Rotterdam nearly a century ago.
Horse-drawn trams were a common sight also in other cities in The Netherlands in that period, like in Delft and Amsterdam. The tram in Delft can still be booked as a tourist attraction and for special occasions. The Netherlands was a very early adopter of electricity for trains and trams. The first electric trains were taken into service around the year 1900. The first electric trams in Rotterdam in 1904. Nevertheless, many Dutch towns retained steam trams, some even as late as just before WW-II.
Wiki: "The RTM (Rotterdamsche Tramweg Maatschappij) was founded in 1878 to operate the first horse-drawn tramway in Rotterdam, which opened in 1879. From then until 1904, the RTM ran both horse trams and steam trams in and around the city, which was then much smaller than today."
The tram company in Rotterdam is still called the "RET", The Rotterdam Electrische Tram" company.
It also runs the tube metro system that was opened in 1967.
The original film has been motion-stabilized, speed-corrected, de-noised, AI enhanced and AI colorized by means of sophisticated software.

Wat afschuwelijk wat er allemaal gaande is in mijn prachtige Nederland.
Nearly hundred years has passed between us and them.
How lovely, not to have over crowding or the fast traffic that we have nowadays.
Literally a completely different world.
Actually Rotterdam and especially the roads were overcrowded! They didn't show that in in this video... But the bridges very often offerend a few hours of waiting (!!) before they coudl be crossed. Several neighbouhoods were very, very crowded with small overpopulated houses..... So, maybe not so different after all? :-)
Mooi dat deze beelden bewaard zijn gebleven.
Although the music behind these pics has been composed six years after 1925, it elevates the images to the perfect pitch.

Except the horses.
Yes Those were the days. When my great-grandparents went out in their open carriage and gave the little ones in the back some cents to throw to the pauper children following behind. Or maybe that happened one generation earlier, not entirely sure. Anyways... life was hard. Unemployment, no showers in most homes, no central heating. Cholera at times, tuberculosis and syfilis wide-spread. It was heaven! Yes, sure...
Als 65 jarige , arme zeer arme als de meeste met een wc in dun hof ketel voor de was zondags opstoken voor smaandags, eten , geld 1 gulden per dag koud ect ect , now adays led groene nou ja stroom 2 auto's voor den deur voor 25 euro koffie drinken in Spanje u weet wel 3400000.000,00 naar u weet wel tja nog het en nog het ander een correctie vind plaats lijkt mij. ja in 1960 kreeg ik een nieren vergiftiging tja nu transplantatie ect geluk gehad nietwaar, voor een ieder gezondheid, inzicht, gematigdheid vanuit de basis geluk. Zoals aan de oppervlakte misschien in die jaren.
Als geboren Rotterdammer vind ik dit helemaal geweldig! Zo hebben dus mijn Opa’s en Oma’s zich door Rotterdam begeven en wat zagen de mensen er vroeger allemaal goed gekleed uit.

I'm here watching this film while my wife is watching Strictly 🙄. Another lovely film from Rick, takes you back to times long gone, lovely architecture here, l wonder how much different it looks now.
The centre of Rotterdam was bombed to smithereens in the Second World War and was rebuilt in sometimes daring modern architectural styles. The most famous example are Rotterdam’s cube houses. So to answer your question: it likely looks very different now-maybe the most different of all of the Netherlands!

@SP At the Voorhaven in Delfshaven, for a very long time up into the 2000's there was a stable in between houses with horses. I suppose they used to have these everywhere a century ago, but special that stable survived for so long.

Prachtig Rick! Ik was twee maanden geleden na zeer lange tijd weer eens in Rotterdam. Het zal nooit mijn lievelingsstad worden, maar dit oude filmpje vind ik echt mooi!
Prachtig om te zien even wegdromen naar lang vervlogen tijden.

Toen ik heel jong was ben ik nog met de laatste paardentram meegereden naar mijn geboorte huis op de beukelsdijk het was begin jaren '70 daarna werden ze allemaal electrisch voortgedreven maar na het afscheid van het paard wist ik waar mijn opa, vader en oom over spraken als ze het over hun verleden hadden. Ik zal het nooit vergeten als ik het paardje heb beloofd.
Ik ben in 1959 geboren op de Beukelsdijk. Op mijn yt kanaal staan div. filmpjes van Rd. Zoek op mijn naam.
Prachtig! Ik las als kind alle boeken van Pietje Bell. Dit zijn de beelden daarbij.
Mijn favoriete stad.
Veel mooie beelden van Overschie. Op 1.50 zie je de Lage Erfbrug. En op 2.20 komt de paardentram aan via de Rotterdamse Rijweg op de Dorpsstraat. Het eindpunt van de lijn.

En toch leef ik liever in mijn huidige stad.Hoe mooi ook alles leek ,er was ook veel armoede.
Ik snap nooit zo dat men in Rotterdam zegt dat het bombardement vooral goede dingen heeft gebracht, persoonlijk vind ik de bouwstijl van ervoor veel mooier. Hele mooie video ook.
Wat ontzettend veel werk, maar wat krijgen wij er een mooie film door te zien. Dank je wel!

sometimes horse transportation is the best.
Horses were treated terribly in those days. The lifespan of a workhorse did not exceed 5 years while horses in the fields would live for 20 years with some ease. In New York, horses fell dead on the street in large numbers, from exhaustion and starvation. The horses in this picture are overworked but do not look underfed.

Mooi filmpje dat een prachtig tijdsbeeld laat zien. "As Time Goes By" is een hitje uit 1931 maar is vooral beroemd geworden door het gebruik ervan in de film Casablanca (1942).
Opvallend dat de Coolsingel toen ook al zo breed was want vroeger was een brede weg gewoon plek verspilling want er waren niet veel auto’s.
De Coolsingel heette vroeger Coolvest en was een singel. Deze is geloof ik in de jaren 20 van de vorige eeuw gedempt.
I find it an incredible shame to think what was done to this beautiful historic city Rotterdam.
Leuk om te zien, Coolsingel was net even anders.

Interesting subject, wonderful colorization, one of the best so far. Many thanks for using motion stabilization again, without which movement in horse-drawn vehicles would probably ruin the film altogether.

Waarschijnlijk was ik vaak in Rotterdam gekomen als het er nog zo uitzag.. Heb niks met de moderne gebouwen die er tegenwoordig staan

Ja i.d.d. herken voor de rest niks uit dit filmpje. Als Amsterdammer (die niks met voetbal te maken heeft) moet ik toegeven dat Rotterdam vroeger echt een mooie stad was. Zonde.
@@Danny-kj4tp Opzich is Rotterdam nog steeds wel een mooie stad, alleen moet je niet het centrum in. Maar toch een wereld van verschil.
There are a couple of buildings that have survived, mainly the south-western part of the Haringvliet and the eastern bit of the Wijnstraat, with the Witte Huis ("White House", art-deco office building next to the Oude Haven).
The most surprising and, in that sense, interesting building to have survived is, in my opinion, the building currently used by the Willem de Kooning Academie on the Blaak. This is a former bank building which, in the oblique manner in which it's built in relation to the Blaak, still shows what the entire building block used to look like. Along its east you can still see what used to be a small alley, with on the other side another block. It was first known as the Gapersteeg and later, after an alley it was in line with, the Vis(ch)steeg. These two names have (I assume after the bombing) been switched around (the bit next to Willem de Kooning is now known as the Vissteeg, while the "alley" after it is known as the Gapersteeg).
Another interesting fact about this building is that it came in place of an earlier collection of buildings, one of which was the "Leesmuseum" (literally "Reading Museum", they were early versions of what would become the modern libraries). This Leesmuseum was located in a building in the north-eastern portion of the later bank, and thus the current Willem de Kooning. This exact spot is used in one of Nicolaas Beets' stories in his Camera Obscura, this story about a student from Rotterdam who comes home from university in Leiden. He saw a beautiful girl somewhere in Gelderland and was immediately taken - though he didn't see her again. It turns out that this girl has an uncle and aunt living on the (always dark and dirty) Hoogstraat, and, visiting them, she takes strolls around Rotterdam. This student, while looking up from his newspaper in the Leesmuseum, suddenly sees the girl walking over the Beursbrug (an old bridge directly north of the Gapersteeg that used to connect the old Beursplein and Zuid-Blaak), and he immediately storms down and tries to follow her without being noticed.
Beets lets her stroll down Zuid-Blaak while the student takes a route which doesn't seem possible if you plot it out on a old map, but there's a similar route you can still walk if you're a bit of a romantic (or run, if you're as in love as the protagonist :p) : storm out of the Willem de Kooning, then go down the Gapersteeg (now Vissteeg), then west over the Wijnstraat and north again over the Brouwerijstraat, where you nonchalantly wait for your love to walk by.
All in all, it is a really vivid reminder of old Rotterdam :)
@@Herrieberg Thanks. I lived 11 years in the Netherlands, in Delft. Good times. I used to go to Rotterdam every weekend. The "old bank building" you are talking about may be that beautiful and imposing building in the city center, close to the Gemeente building.
