Subbed! Excellent work, there's real joy in watching old footage like this, especially in color because it makes it look less of a distant point in time. Also it's fun when you speak Dutch and you understand all those signs :)

thanks for publishing in ai colour...my father and his parents lived in Amsterdam in 1932/33 so tis video from 1931 gave me a glimpse into the city back then. i love Amsterdam and hope to revisit for the 4th time after the pandemic gets under control

Saw Cohen's and thought about it being a Jewish surname in pre-WWII footage. Fell down a rabbit hole and learned about the history of Nathan Cohen, confectioner who's address was the same as the cart at 03:44 and then saw he died in Auschwitz. Just makes this archive more haunting and poignant.

Put you on another rabbit hole. Hitler was a jew and his gestapo chief lies in the jewish cemetary in Germany. History isn’t what it seems.

My grandmother told me how when she was a kid she and her school friends would "explore Amsterdam" on their bikes. She was around 12 or 13 then and just went around Amsterdam without knowing were she was without adult supervision. How the times have changed

My 13 year old cousin does this all the time in Amsterdam. Lots of things have changed here but luckily that hasn’t. Although he does do it on an electric bike 😂

A lot of these shopkeepers were Jewish, a lot of them 'secular', so not orthodox religious. In the 30s a lot of Jewish people fled to Holland/Amsterdam from the nazi's in Germany, but were nevertheless deported and murdered in 40-45. Films like these are in fact heartbreaking.

@@saskiakneulman7275 Just because WW II happened don't make these films heartbreaking. Instead it shows a beautiful view of history with people long gone. You can also call it heartbreaking in comparison to what Amsterdam now has become with Halalsema and it's current population.
