According to a character performer who regularly plays Honest John at Disneyland, who did a reddit AMA, masked characters are played almost exclusively by woman and gay men. Usually woman play the shorter characters, and gay men play the taller characters. Also they're almost always theatre kids. So this absolutely checks out lol
