  • In this episode of Adventures into History, I team up with Mike Buckner to explore the forgotten Georgia town of Junction City. Once a bustling community, Junction City has dwindled over the years, leaving behind just a few remnants of its former vibrancy. Together, we delve into the town's rich history, uncovering stories of its past and the reasons behind its decline.
Our journey takes us inside two of the last remaining buildings from Junction City's heyday: the old funeral home, which was later converted into a grocery store and is now used as storage by Mike, and the historic commissary. These buildings stand as silent witnesses to a time when the town was full of life and activity.
Join us as we walk through these storied structures, peeling back the layers of time to reveal the hidden history of Junction City, Georgia.

My great grandfather was a carpenter blacksmith embalmer and funeral director. I have his Tennessee Funeral Director’s framed license. He built his own house after dear beloved Bess was struck and killed on the train tracks by his business and house. I learned as a 12 year old that Bess was the family milk cow. None of my grandmother’s or siblings could talk about it without tearing up. 😢

It is interesting how the funeral homes were usually part of a family owned variety of businesses back then. Furniture store, real-estate agency, and street names are left behind even 100 years after the funeral home may have closed.

Those buildings looked a whole lot better on the inside than they do from the outside. Well preserved innards! Robert, you must be watching Aventure Archeology! I was impressed with you knowledge of Cherocola and to look as to where the bottle was made! But you have been watching it longer than I have. I had never heard of it or Brandon Nichols until I saw him metal detect at the OBF. I have watched him every since, so thanks for making me aware of him!

Chero-Cola originated here in Columbus (along with Coca-Cola but that’s a discussion for another time) and is always one of my favorite sodas. I’ve collected and dug bottles for years, which led me to Adventure Archeology early in my UA-cam days. Was super excited when he came to the farm and I need to get him back down this way!
