Just a silly question but why don't you use a piping bag for pointing? I'm sure you have a good reason as all your work is spectacular and very precise.
There's a few reasons really 😊 First of all, I want to learn to do it the "proper" way. We know several people who do or did this as their job and they prefer using a trowel and pointing knife. And that leads to the second reason: using piping bags/mortar guns is not very suited for lime mortar because you need to make a wet mix. With cement based mortars this is fine but with lime mortar if not done exactly right it can lead to shrinking and cracking. The mix we are currently using is an NHL based lime mortar and I have used a piping bag to set the barn windows in place because of the really awkward corners. In that situation it was the best method but working with the wet mix is frustrating (in my personal opinion) as it tends to not adhere to the stone as well, and makes a proper mess. The time you gain pointing you loose cleaning up after. So the short version I guess is there is a time and place for both techniques but I personally prefer trowel + pointing knife vs piping bag.
@@storiesfromthecascina Thank you so much for your valued explanation. I totally get it and I admire your work so much. Thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to respond to my question. I very much appreciate you both!
Along with Martijn Doolard you are my favorite channel for the poetry of the camera, rythm and slow life ambience, with time for silence. So I enjoyed seeing your small reference to his channel at the very end. For me you are both masters in this art!
Absolutely! Me too. Vlogs don't have to be nonstop talking. I love how quiet and peaceful the filming is and how there is only talking when necessary. Perfect and beautiful work you two!
I agree that the mutual respect you show each other is so heart warming. Many channels show the wife being verbally abused or not acknowledged at all. I have flipped many homes and my husband did very little to help, but it was not his thing, I never treated anyone with disrespect. Thank you for sharing your journey with us. The two of you have so much talent.
The mutual respect you have for the talents of what each of you contributes individually to the tasks you undertake is awe-inspiring. I could no bear the week ahead without a dose of "Stories from the cascina." Loving that you have two cats--always better to have a pair of friends--in my experience. Looks as though the season is closing but you will have a snug place to work on whatever winter project lie ahead. With great respect for the wonderful, thoughtful and detailed work that you do filled with love and possibilities for the future.
The new Lintel & window looks so good, very resourceful with reusing the railway sleeper/fire mantle. The new kitty is a sweetie, and a real natural with her affections. She just might become the star of the show. It won't be long before the 2 kittens will be the best of friends. 🤞
I’m so glad you got your first kitty a companion. I’m sure they’ll be the best of friends in no time. I love how you’re not pushing them to interact with each other and are taking so much care in their integration to a new place. The second kitty is so incredibly sweet!!! Thank you for another lovely vlog at your beautiful farmhouse.
Another wonderful video, thank you! Many people don't like spiders but look at the jewel-catchers their webs become in the fall. The lintels look great with their new color, and I love how you incorporated Martijn into your kitten quiet time at the end. Great that you have two now and in time they will have much fun together.
Weer een fijne vlog. Lapjeskatten zijn geweldig, die van ons ligt het liefst de hele dag op schoot. Ik hoop dat de dames snel met elkaar overweg kunnen. Fijn weekend en tot volgende week!
I can see why the renovations take so long with all the fiddly work. Very well done. Enjoy watching your progress and love the addition of the kittens.
Bertus, being a substitute mama, teaching his kitten how to be adventurous. I like it. I have read somewhere that houses built with straw bales covered with clay mud, also have a problem with shedding dust. I have a modern house, and dust is also a minor problem😊😊
Your new kitten is really pretty and I love the way she's watching Martijn on youtube on your computer at the end. Well done guys, you are really moving along with things on your farm now xx
It's been four weeks since I've been able to sign in and watch your videos. Being in North Carolina in the middle of the hurricane has dealt us a blow each and every way. Having a huge tree land on our home and our only way in and out of our neighborhood being washed out has put a lot of perspective on life. It's good to be back watching your progress with your new additions. Hope you can get them fixed when the time is right.
There’s a beautiful sense of calm in what ever you do, everything is planned and researched to get the best result. This is going to be a most amazing property when completed! I love that you explain the whys and wherefore to us so we understand the full process. So 2 kittens now, they certainly enjoy your company! Looking forward to the time we see them both together with ease. ❤
The windows look so nice! And, of course, the lap quilt was for your new kittens. Congratulations on the growing family. I also watch "Martijn Doolaard" and "Roaming Wild Rosie" faithfully.
Both cats are adorable. They love you both. Your little tiger loves her life and just gets around!! So cute to watch as she pops up everywhere. We will see the personality of your other baby girl soon. She is so cute too!❤
Lots of lime mortar pointing to come. I hope those interiors are weather proofed enough to allow you to finish pointing that former garage and workshop space so that they are more air tight and allow a little heating to facilitate a comfy workshop environment for you many projects this coming winter and through the rainy season/days as well. Great to see that you have 2 young cats now, to keep each other company and provide emotional support for each other inside and outside your country home. They are both young enough to find a comfortable relationship given a little time. They should also provide so much enjoyment to watch as they play chase and wrestle with each other in play. Don't be surprised to hear them in the middle of the night playing chase and challenging each other with hide and seek, climbing games, oh, and the active one pouncing on the sleeping cat to get her going in the game even when she wants to sleep. LOL. The pitter patter of little feet in the farmhouse is sure to provide lots of entertainment.
Must be so nice to have a room for every activity and hobby. Love the new kitten, they will be friends. Bertus eyes shining with tenderness and love over those kittens, lovely video, thank you
WOW! Sois unos artesanos fabulosos, con verdadera sensibilidad hacia los materiales y tradiciones, muy inteligentes, mi sincera admiración!!! Esa granja quedará preciosa, una reliquia ancestral, en vuestras manos❤❤❤
@@storiesfromthecascina That strategy on exposed stone seems like the perfect balance. The lintels over the windows look REALLY good after your work. And your redo of the windows in the house look incredible. Well done!
With so many stone joints to fill, you might consider mixing your mortar to the consistency of cake frosting and then use a grout bag (similar to a piping bag for dessert decorating) to squeeze the mortar into the joints. We are truly enjoying your progress. Keep up the good work.
I loved seeing the kitten watching Martijin😂 another of my favorite channels. I’m excited to see the transformation in your weekly vlogs. You have done so much in this last year❤❤❤

This was wonderful. I hope your two cats can find a friendship. Mine did not and hated each other for years. But there were years of difference their ages. Oi!

We have used that method before. It's great for awkward corners. I prefer trowel and pointing knife for everything else. In my experience it's not neccesarily faster - filling up those bags takes time, and you tend to waste more material, which makes for more cleanup. When we start with pointing larger surfaces we might look into a pump system for the mortar 😊
Bravo😊
