Manny Li no problem! Unfortunately UA-cam doesn’t have any tours for shared rooms in orchard commons. I’m not talking about the connected singles, I mean the double rooms
hmmm that sucks :( tbh i haven't really even seen the double rooms in orchard either; there aren't that many double rooms there but i would assume they are very similar to the connected singles in terms of the style of room!!
Hey this was super helpful!! Please do more UBC videos...life on campus/off campus, studies and more stuff about ubc and starting uni in general for us upcoming freshmen. Thank you!!
thanks for the kind comment! i'm going to be uploading more ubc/university related videos in the future, but for now you can check out the vlogs on my channel since most of them are about uni and what i do on a daily basis!
I am about to be in grade 12 so applications are close by, and UBC is one of my top choices. It's between McGill, UBC or UofT. One of the biggest perks of UBC is the scenery and campus. It truly beats most other universities in that aspect.
I start at UBC Vancouver this Winter Session! I will be arriving on the 23rd Of August 2019 from India and this was SUPER Helpful! Thank you so much Manny. Are you part of "Jumpstart"? If so, see you there!
I'm Brazilian, and I always wanted to move to Canada. Ultimately I heard about a opportunity to study in Canada, and I am really motivated. I hope to be making a room tour video like you soon
unfortunately students don't have stoves or anything :( there's microwaves and fridges in all the floor lounges no matter what residence you're in. some resident advisors have stoves and stuff thought but i'm not sure if they'll let you use them regularly.
Your video is so informative!! I will be moving in to Place Vanier this fall and I was wondering if you have any router that you recommend getting for a shared room?
I just graduated from my high scl and this is the first university I want to attend aboard ? But I guess it’s too expensive right ? Would u mind if u tell me how much do we have to pay for each year in the university including living in the residence? Plz 😶

Great video. super informative. But I was wondering if you know if, these residences are only available for first years? what about second year transfers?
thanks for the comment!! :) these are first year residences; any other students (grad students, upper years, etc.) are in other residences like walter age, ponderosa commons, marine drive, thunderbird, and more!!
😩😩😩😩😩I also want to go to UBC... Im. Literally hoping i pass my o levels... Im currently writing my igcse's exams this year and im soooo scared😭also 15 years old
do you have a source of income? if so, is it part-time or full time and could you make a video on how you manage your studies and work? my family isn't that well off, so i will need a job to afford things like a wifi router, printer, furniture etc. and i'm not sure if i'll be able to manage.
yes, i work a job during the school year :) i understand that dorm shopping can be quite pricey; check out facebook marketplace, craigslist, etc. to try and cut down on costs if possible!
there's either communal washrooms (shared by entire floor) or single connected washrooms (shared w one other person). i believe oc has a few single bathrooms (private) but i think those are for special circumstances!
Hey this was super useful :) thanks for sharing. I had questions: 1.why do you have printers in your room? 2. Are there any house lounges? 3. How expensive is the food? Or is it worth the money?
hi! thanks for the comment! :) 1. i used my printer for a bunch of different things: printing out readings for class, assignments to hand in, and other miscellaneous papers/forms that i had to fill out. having a printer in my room was a lot easier than walking to the library every time because sometimes i'd need to print something last-minute. 2. there are house lounges! i forgot to mention. they're pretty similar to the floor lounges, but bigger. 3. living on residence requires you to have a meal plan. dining hall food isn't super expensive; i think if you budget right you'll be able to use up your meal plan the entire year without going over and needing more food money. i think i spent around $10-15 for meals at the dining hall (you get a 5% discount for meal plan though) and around the same for meals around ubc that also take meal plan dollars. let me know if you have any more questions!!
Thanks a lot for the info, I was actually quite unhappy with how little information the website gives. Your video is awesome, maybe I'll even see you in school by September. Don't worry about the mic, it sounds like blowing bubbles into a water cup with a straw XD.
Are you allow to enter residence even if you don't live there? Do they check id or something? Looks like Orchard Commons have more study space than Totem Park. Can you use the gym at other residence?
you are allowed to be in other residences, for sure!! but to get into each residence you need a specific key so you'll have to get in with a friend that lives there. each specific dorm varies in the amount of study space provided, but there are so many study spots on campus including in the commonsblocks, libraries, and class buildings!! and there are gyms in all the commonsblock of the residences so that is open to anyone of any residence i believe!
orchard technically is on campus - just a bit further from the centre of it. i would say it takes around 10-15 mins to walk from orchard commons to the sauder school of business building? (which is what many ppl call the centre of campus)
i can try! i'm not an expert at the admissions stuff but i can definitely try to make a video about it :) check out my college applications video for some general tips!
Hi I am 16, and UBC it's my biggest motivation to go well on school, I rlly hope I can be accepted one day 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾 thanks for this video it was very necessary 🙈🙏🏾 class '22
definitely work really hard on your personal profile! get some teachers/adults to read it & proofread it since the personal profile is weighed really heavily in the application process :)
Hello!! I was wondering about the ritsumeikan residence. Do first year students apply to there??? I'm scared of applying there since normally all first year are in place vanier, totem and orchard.
Hey! There are definitely a few pros and cons of both. One pro for living in a connected single is that you don't have to share the washroom with the rest of the floor, so it's great that you'll get some privacy in the bathroom. One of the downsides to this, unfortunately, is that you'll have to clean the bathroom, shower, sinks, etc. And they do check; once per semester they will go into your room, check the bathroom, room, etc.!! Another downside that I can think of (and a lot of ppl from ubc have talked about this one) is that there is a lack of community in the single connected houses. Of course, this might not be true for every single-connected floor, but because a lot of people stay in their rooms most of the time and don't even need to get of their rooms to go to the bathroom, there is often a lack of community and you feel like you don't know everyone on your floor. Anyways, thanks for commenting! Let me know if anything didn't make sense!!
This helped thank you! I was just also wondering did using communal bathrooms help you make any friends? And is it weird having shared bathrooms idk if this makes sense😂
I wouldn't say that I became best friends with the girls on my floor BECAUSE of the shared bathrooms, but it was definitely a place to chat with people and catch up about your day. I don't think it was weird, but it definitely took some adjusting to when I first got there. You have to make small changes, like bringing your shower caddy, wearing flip flops in the shower, etc. Also there would sometimes be situations where some people leave the shower/toilet dirty or not flushed which sucked.
Hi. Thanks a lot for the video. I just got admitted to UBC and had some further questions regarding the residence. Do you mind sharing your email or do you want me to ask them here?
Are there no suite style rooms? With a living space, kitchen, and 1+ bathroom with 1-4 bedrooms attached? I thought there was, but like- more expensive

So, UBC doesnt provide wifi to its residences?
at orchard commons they do! if you're at totem or vanier you'll have to get your own router :)
there are houses in Totem that are newer/built at the same time as OC and those don’t require routers!
are all the rooms singles?
there are double rooms as well!
