@@GrandChessboard Pay people anymore? Many rural EMS departments have been run by volunteer medics for years! I’m an EMT and the three counties around me are all volunteer status and has been since the EMS dept was established. Yet we as volunteer EMT’s and paramedics still have to pay for numerous continuing education and recertification fees every 2 years, not to mention other various things that come out our pockets. Covid and the volunteer basis is why so many rural areas are loosing so many medics.

Bless them. Their community needed help. Despite being young, they stepped up to help because there was no one else to do it. Hearing them talk, they have compassion and care about people. It's nice to hear their patients appreciating them too. It's so inspirational to see youth rising up to do good things. Instead of complaining about how bad things are, they do something to make life better. They're learning and performing life saving skills. Our children are our future, so I hope to see more like this.

Actually there is other willing to work, but not at the poor pay rates ems companies pay. The experienced medics are leaving to work at staffing agencies that pay a lot better so kids like these are filling in spots without any experienced medics to train them. It’s scary what’s happening especially because it’s so easily sugar coated with a little heart warming story like this.

    • @degummybear

@@osielalvarado1921 Exactly. And most states don't even consider them an essential service like the Fire Department. Most don't get health insurance which is ironic. It's a poorly designed system which caused its own worker shortage and they rarely get any attention so there's no incentive to fix it.

Working for free while the EMT services make more money? The price of an ambulance is not going down any is it? Where's the money gong then? $20 an hour for EMT in NY is a joke. In-and-Out burger pays more. This country is in huge trouble.

  • @ChasenBearPlane

Pay EMT's and medics a livable wage. It's super cool they are helping and volunteering but the sad truth is EMT's make less than a lot of customer service jobs in my area. I come into your home, and take you or your loved ones out of a bad situation, give them medical care, and transport to a hospital.
This is not a career you do for money, but I don't think using literal children as volunteers to supplement paying first responders is a good option.
Like, is it NOT SCARY that no one is willing to do it for the money? People with real training cannot afford to work on a box, and that hurts society as a whole.
First response medical care should not pay LITERALLY LESS THAN TARGET AND WAL-MART.

It's a great story, but the real problem is how EMS is treated. The pay is terrible, the hours long, and the call volume is rising everywhere. There wouldn't be a need in this country for more EMS workers if they fixed these problems. Although I love my work, many have a hard time and have to work additional jobs in order to make it to their next paycheck.

“Nobody else will do it if we don’t.” That’s deep and true. Most people do not realize how badly us rural agencies are struggling. We’re close to crisis levels EMS personnel wise. Even nearby paid EMS services are struggling to hire people, which further hurts us by increasing our call volume when they have to call for mutual aid. Not a good situation.

“69% say they’re struggling to find help” MAYBE because most places make you pay for the school where as FD’s train you for free, or because of politics with the towns over billing/vetting/funding. I was on my squad right up until we got shut down because even though we were costing the town ZERO dollars, they hated that we were there.

It’s sad that the EMS industry is so poorly funded that it’s difficult to staff ambulances all across the US. EMS is going backwards. Unlicensed personnel out there left and right. Their hearts are in the right place, but the system has failed. Pay Medics what they are worth and their wouldn’t be such a shortage. When you can make more working at chic fil a then you can as an EMT it shows you how twisted the EMS industry has become. Heart warming stories like this are not the solution, when you are in an emergency trust me, you don’t want a high school kid showing up to help you because the trained personnel with years of experience are off working for staffing agencies that pay them 10 times what their departments pay them.

Recruiting in the high schools is a great idea. I always thought we should have recruited young people in the inner city and rural areas for those IT jobs that were left unfilled, the ones where we issued H1B visas for. Nothing against the people who came over for those jobs, I just thought we should have been doing more to train people at home for well paying work. Any skilled job that we don't have enough trained people for, recruit from the high schools and provide paid training.

Volunteer work that requires an initial investment of $5k then yearly education requirements. The government made it not worth it.

Yeah also because older volunteers in past years have treated young guys so poorly that’s how they got to this point where they are struggling to find help. These squads for the most part where created during the war for the young to have a chance of doing something that wasn’t front line infantry

Thats good and all, but once they experience overwork for little pay and being used by employers. U won't be so eager as much. But tis is volunteering so be careful yall.
