Dear sir very Good video. I have question - Smooth Q3 when i zoom camera changes and makes videos light and Quality Defferent any way for zooming to be not change? Or Smooth 5 same when u want zoom? it changes the cameras or no?
Sounds like you have auto exposure turned on. You can lock the exposure depending on the app you’re using and it won’t change like that. Also, if you’re doing a digital zoom that can degrade the quality of the footage. Make sure it’s optical if it all possible.
Thank you for this comprehensive and helpful comparison! I’ve been looking for a gimbal for my iPhone 13 Pro that is compact, works with ultra wide lens in both landscape and portrait modes (can’t see motor arms in screen), can change mode easily with buttons, and has good tilt range while in lock mode (I.e. can do “flashlight mode”). I’ve watched endless videos and am coming to the conclusion that perhaps what I’m looking for doesn’t exist and I have to decide which of my requirements are the most important... Is there a gimbal you’d recommend based on what I’m looking for?
Probably the Smooth 5. It checks all those boxes, although haven’t shot much portrait with it. The DJI OM 4 SE is another possibility, especially for the Pro size phones (not Pro Max). And if you have the budget the Crane M3 is one to consider. Thanks for watching!
@@iphoneographers Thanks so much for the info! I was between the Smooth 5 and Smooth Q3. The Smooth 5 still felt a bit bulky to me for casual everyday use (as does the Crane M3). I ended up getting the Q3 knowing I'm sacrificing the full tilt range a bit, but I think I can learn to work with it. After a ton of research (and two returned gimbals :), it seems the best gimbal really depends on one's shooting style and needs, and there are going to be some trade offs especially since compactness was important for me. I just received the Q3 today and am very happy so far! I'll need a lot of practice with it but I believe it will work for my needs. Thanks again!
@@shanchu07are you using counter weights to balance it? I just bought the Q4 version, not sure if I will need counter weights. Just out of curiosity, did you consider the Q4? I saw you mentioned Q3 and Q5 only
I wouldn't buy any product from Moza. Their customer service is terrible and they don't take care of issues even when the product is under warranty. BUYER BEWARE.
I’ve heard a few other people say that, but I’ve never personally had any trouble. I guess it depends on where you buy it. I’ve heard people having bad customer service experiences with DJI, too.
Great video, but I was curious if you would recommend any of these for action sports? Particularly snowboarding and recording someone else with a phone instead of going the GoPro route and are the DSLR photo grips a good substitute to a gimbal for this type of shooting (not on any professional level but just to get a nice looking video)
Sure you could use really any of these for that, though I’d probably go smaller and keep the setup minimalist. The DJI or Hohem likely my picks for that kind of thing. Also shoot with the Ultra Wide lens too, not only for a wider field-of-view (similar to GoPro), but it’ll be even more stable - and you could also probably just use a grip like you mention. You’d just need to pair it with a phone mount.
@@iphoneographers thanks so much for the info I’m going to do a little more research on attachment for the grip to see if I can get it to mount to a phone.
HELP! Really hard to find a straight forward answer - is DJI om 4 SE compatible with the standard iPhone 13 with the app and the weight / straight horizon ? If you know please say! Thanks!
Hi, very good your video. I've had bad experiences with the Zhiyun Q2 and the Zhiyun Q4 with the Samsung Note 10 Plus... I'm afraid to buy another gimble that comes with the same problems with the Note 10 Plus, that is, the ends of the phone touch on the main motor arm, and that spoils almost all the takes at more extreme angles... For this one a note 10 plus or the next S22 ultra, which is the most recommended gimble, which has good angles of inclination in the 3 axes between 280 and 340 degrees
For the bigger phones I have been recently recommending the Crane M3 or similar. They’re what I call “hybrid “designed for small mirrorless cameras or phones.
The Smooth 5 would be a good one if you’re wanting a smartphone only gimbal. And the DJI 0M, 4 SE works, and the new OM6 works as well. But with the phone alone, no accessories. For larger phones, I like the bigger gimbals and so you might also look at the Crane M3 or similar.
Yeah, my current favorite is the Crane M3. I also like the FeiyuTech Scorp Mini. ua-cam.com/video/S304iLKg0kE/v-deo.html These are both medium duty and affordable.
The Smooth 5 is probably the best smartphone gimbal to do that… ua-cam.com/video/vHsypfyr-jk/v-deo.html or you might consider a hybrid setup like the Crane M3 or Scorp Mini or AirCross S… ua-cam.com/video/FKpOiUP5Lqw/v-deo.html
My main set up is an iPhone XS Max with a SANDMARC case with a step-up adaptor for variable ND and CPL filters. Sadly, my Zhiyun Smooth 5 works well with the phone in the case, but is not reliable with the adaptor and filters. I saw that the Smooth 5S has the same payload as the 5. Looks like I’m ditching smartphone gimbals for heavier-duty models.
@@iphoneographers - The Filmic Pro integration with the Smooth 5 is what swayed me away from a Crane M3 - but in hindsight that integration is useless from a practical perspective. Shame on the gimbal companies since all smartphone gimbals are the equivalent of cars that only have engines strong enough to transport the driver and maybe a couple bags of groceries, but can’t leave the driveway if you add a gym bag, or your kids, LOL. Long term I wish they would standardize the control interfacing standards between DSLRs’, mirrorless cameras’, and camcorders’ onboard software, plus phone videography apps, with gimbals so a wide range of gimbals can operate at least record start/stop for goodness sake of any modern prosumer digital videography device. For now, I’m just hand-holding my phone when shooting footage for my channel since I shoot at live events and have to shoot quickly on the run to gather enough content to make the trip worthwhile. With gimbal technology as it is, it’s just easier to stabilize the heck out of my videos in post - and upgrading to a newer phone will reduce that dependency. Appreciate the opportunity to rant.
@@iphoneographers - 🤜✨🤛 . . . Also, I’m gonna upgrade to an iPhone 14: your content regarding the new iPhone is really good and helped me make that decision.
Very informative! Are there any issues with the ultra wide lens on any of these gimbals? Sometimes the gimbal can show up in your shot with that lens. Thanks!
Yes, several of them you will see the arm using the Ultra Wide unless you go into “flashlight” mode where the gimbal tilts forward. Mainly the smaller gimbals have that issue, but for the most part it can be avoided. Thanks for watching!
I personally always leave it on. I get much better results. That thinking in my experience is really more towards using traditional cameras and IS lenses where they can fight against each other. But with phones I’ll almost always leave it on.
Depends on which Otterbox case. The heavy duty ones will likely be too heavy with the max size phone. That gimbal probably holds in the 280g-290g range and the phone itself weigh 240g.
If you have a smaller phone it could work, but those are pretty bulky cases. I normally don’t recommend using those with these type of gimbals. Larger gimbals they will be OK.
ive always wanted a moment case with a lens kit but apple keep changing the style and sizes of there iphones. eg the Glass of the lens is a bit bigger and the bump is bigger so it gets exspensive if the phone design changes every year
Yeah that can be an issue for sure. Especially the last couple years because the larger camera bump has made some lenses incompatible. But if you keep your phone for a few years it’s not that expensive of an investment, because for the most part the lenses still work across all lines. The cases do have to change though.
Thanks for this video! I’m thinking about getting a good gimbal for my 13 Pro Max. But, I’m not sure if I should get a BeastGrip Pro, or a nice gimbal. What would you choose?
It really depends on what you’re shooting. I personally don’t use gimbals a lot, so the Beastgrip Pro would likely get more use and also last years since it’s universal . I’m also very keen on the SmallRig cage for the 13 Pro Max… it’s very affordable and has a Moment bayonet mount system. If you do go for a gimbal I’d probably do the Smooth 5 - although if you want to have the phone in a rig you’ll need a bigger setup like the FeiyuTech G6 Max. Thanks for watching!
My favorites are either from Freewell or Moment. And I primarily use a 2-5 stop VND. So just depends on what size you want to get but here is a link to Freewell amzn.to/3rrbtw1. And if you want to check out Moment I have a link in the video description for their website. Good luck!
Smooth 5 vs crane m2s? I know the smooth 5 is dedicated for smartphones so that's definitely a plus. If the m2s is as convenient to balance as the smooth 5 then maybe it os a better choice for heavier set ups
Do not get the Smooth 5 if you have a IPhone 13 Pro max. I had it for a few days and returned it. Gimbal kept turning automatically to Portrait mode during shooting normal landscape videos. It would then do strange movements on its own causing me to have to restart the gimbal dozens of times over the course of 20-30 mins. You cannot use an external mic on the IPHONE because the lightening port is blocked by the gimbal. Battery life is barely 1.5 hours. I took it out on a normal shoot just filming landscape video and it died fairly quickly. Was unable to get more video and left a lot of video opportunities on the field. I think there are better options. I’m strictly talking about larger cellphones like my 13 Pro max. Also, unless you use Filmic Pro or their own Cami app then the gimbal features are useless. Only the power button, mode, and control switch are usable with Apples camera app.
Sounds like you might have gotten a lemon? I’ve had no issues like that with the Smooth 5. Only times it ever “fails” is sometimes with heavy lenses. I made a video about it specifically with the 13 PM… ua-cam.com/video/vHsypfyr-jk/v-deo.html But for larger phones I do typically recommend the Crane M3 or similar. Though the Smooth 5 has been very solid and my go to smartphone gimbal since its release.
@@iphoneographers Maybe. I was really frustrated as it kept just rotating to Portrait orientation and unable to get back to landscape. I wasn’t using any lenses either (although I do own a few Moment lenses). I returned it and now will be looking at the Crane or the Ronin SC if it can hold the 13 Pro Max properly.
Not in my experience. Zhiyun especially are very good. But Moza is solid too. They all will fade over time with use, but for the most part they’ve been pretty durable.
At 182g any of these gimbals will work. So it really depends on what kind of stuff you’re shooting - and if you want to control the gimbal in Filmic Pro. If you want to do that go with DJI or the Smooth 5 (they’re adding support for this soon). If you don’t care about that (and I personally don’t), then I really like the Hohem. But again, all these are solid options.

I highly recommend the smallrig cage for the iphone 13 pro max, but you'd need to purchase a secondary backplate that has the 17mm screw-in mount for the regular and telephoto lenses if you don't use the Moment style mount add-on lenses.
Yeah agreed it’s a great cage I have it and use it all the time.
Will this fit any of the gimbals though?
Not these, but larger ones like the Crane M3.
thanks! that was really helpful, wanting to take a few vids of my tanks in the wild so to speak!
Excellent
Dear sir
very Good video.
I have question -
Smooth Q3 when i zoom camera changes and makes videos light and Quality Defferent
any way for zooming to be not change?
@@shanchu07 did you ever find a gimbal that you were able to shoot in portrait where the arms don’t show?
@@Ch3sl0ck Yes the Zhiyun Smooth Q3 has been working great for me!
@@shanchu07are you using counter weights to balance it? I just bought the Q4 version, not sure if I will need counter weights. Just out of curiosity, did you consider the Q4? I saw you mentioned Q3 and Q5 only
Can all the gimbals you reviewed be switched into vertical mode ?
This was so helpful
I wouldn't buy any product from Moza. Their customer service is terrible and they don't take care of issues even when the product is under warranty. BUYER BEWARE.
I’ve heard a few other people say that, but I’ve never personally had any trouble. I guess it depends on where you buy it. I’ve heard people having bad customer service experiences with DJI, too.
Did someone tried the dji osmo 3 with the iphone 13 pro max?
Thank you for doing this kind of content. Safes me a lot of work!! New fan of you channel
HELP! Really hard to find a straight forward answer - is DJI om 4 SE compatible with the standard iPhone 13 with the app and the weight / straight horizon ? If you know please say! Thanks!
Yes it is. Though not sure what you mean by “straight horizon”. But the gimbal will hold that phone fine and it works well.
I got an iPhone 14 Pro Max I want to go full gear (Lens and case and maybe light) with the right gamble 😩
Got a video dropping in just a little while that might help you out… Go with a “hybrid” gimbal.
VERY important question. Will the any of these gimbals work on an IPhone 14 pro max ?
The Smooth 5 would be a good one if you’re wanting a smartphone only gimbal. And the DJI 0M, 4 SE works, and the new OM6 works as well. But with the phone alone, no accessories. For larger phones, I like the bigger gimbals and so you might also look at the Crane M3 or similar.
Just bought an iPhone 14 pro max. Are the better gimbals for it than these consumer models? One that would work with a dslr too?
Yeah, my current favorite is the Crane M3. I also like the FeiyuTech Scorp Mini. ua-cam.com/video/S304iLKg0kE/v-deo.html These are both medium duty and affordable.
Hey I have iPhone pro max , nd filter , moment case , lenses .. is there any smartphone gimbal that can handle the weight
Yeah probably best for those kind of setups. I like the Crane M3 or similar… ua-cam.com/video/S304iLKg0kE/v-deo.html
Enjoyed the rant. :)
@@iphoneographers could you clarify, which models have this UWA limitations?
Hello
Should the camera's stabilization system be turned off when using the gimbal?
I personally always leave it on. I get much better results. That thinking in my experience is really more towards using traditional cameras and IS lenses where they can fight against each other. But with phones I’ll almost always leave it on.
Mmm lighting on this is pretty dire.
I have a 3-axis stabilizing HoHem Gimbal and was wondering if it’ll work with my iphone 13 pro max with Ottoerbox case?
Depends on which Otterbox case. The heavy duty ones will likely be too heavy with the max size phone. That gimbal probably holds in the 280g-290g range and the phone itself weigh 240g.
@@iphoneographers Thank you so much for the info! 🙏🏾
Can any of the gimbals work with a shotgun rode mic attached?
Yes pretty much all of them can if you connect it to the bottom… This might help: ua-cam.com/video/K8d9TOX5A0Q/v-deo.html
Which sandmark clip on nd filter do you recommend for the iPhone 13 pro max?
So would you recommend spending a bit more and getting a larger hybrid gimbal? If so what should I look at?
If you have a larger phone, yes. Check out the Crane M3 or similar.. ua-cam.com/video/S304iLKg0kE/v-deo.html
Why there's not Zhiyun Q3 ?
A Well Explained Tutorial ,Thank You , P.S. : i received my Smooth 5 yesterday !
will these work with a case - such as an otter box defender?
Thanks for watching!
iphone? why not a samsing note ? ultra version???
Check the name of the channel. :)
Been excited about this
I’m returning my om5. 13 pro max was def too heavy
Yeah it’s borderline and with any accessories a no go.
@@iphoneographers great video! Keep up the good work
hi may i know which type of nd filter u using ?
My favorites are either from Freewell or Moment. And I primarily use a 2-5 stop VND. So just depends on what size you want to get but here is a link to Freewell amzn.to/3rrbtw1. And if you want to check out Moment I have a link in the video description for their website. Good luck!
First!
Exactly the video I needed!
Smooth 5 vs crane m2s? I know the smooth 5 is dedicated for smartphones so that's definitely a plus. If the m2s is as convenient to balance as the smooth 5 then maybe it os a better choice for heavier set ups
Yeah the Crane models are great for heavier setups.
I made a video about it specifically with the 13 PM… ua-cam.com/video/vHsypfyr-jk/v-deo.html
But for larger phones I do typically recommend the Crane M3 or similar.
What’s the filter thread size for that sandmarc clip on filter?
It’s their proprietary setup, but believe it’s 55mm on the outside.
@@iphoneographers thanks!
Smallrig makes a case that uses moment lenses.
Yeah it’s a good one too.
@@iphoneographers I just saw your video on it! ❤️
Moza Mini MX seems most stable here
It actually does perform well.
Whats good for iPhone 11
Any of these will work fine.
@@iphoneographers thanks
Other than dji most of the other gimbals gets a lot of issues over time people say that
Not in my experience. Zhiyun especially are very good. But Moza is solid too. They all will fade over time with use, but for the most part they’ve been pretty durable.
@@iphoneographers so which gimbal i should buy please suggest me best one according to your experience with these gimbals
What phone do you have?
@@iphoneographers one plus 7 and i use filmic pro for videography
At 182g any of these gimbals will work. So it really depends on what kind of stuff you’re shooting - and if you want to control the gimbal in Filmic Pro. If you want to do that go with DJI or the Smooth 5 (they’re adding support for this soon). If you don’t care about that (and I personally don’t), then I really like the Hohem. But again, all these are solid options.
Does the moonlight dog filter fit on the small rig cage? Using iPhone 13 pro max
Yes it does as long as you get the bayonet mount cage. They also sell a 17mm mount version.
Very helpful. Thank you. Going to grab a smooth5 for my s22 ultra
how was you lr experience with that? I struggled shooting on portrait mode with my s22 ultra
