    This aria has never been sung better? Power, colour, diction, passion, tragedy? Lanza snapped up by Hollywood and died so young a total tragedy too.

    As much as I like Luciano Pavarotti. I think Mario Lanza nails this...
    It's the emotion. He lived it, rejection an all that. What a voice, fantastic.

    I have to say I'm shocked that Mario Lanza's Vesti La Giubba is so magnificent! I never "knew" his operatic acting and his voice were so wonderful. I'm a true Pavarotti fan but I believe this version rivals his! It's so irritating though that they take the camera off him to show some side actors while he is delivering one of the best performances of one of the most soulful songs of all times!

    The opera world rarely includes Lanza in the discussion of the great tenors. Let anyone listen to this version of Vesti la Giubba and deny that Lanza ranks with the greatest of all time. This aria is one of Caruso's trademarks: perhaps his most famous because of the power and emotion. But Mario nails every note and nuance: let me dip into sacrilege and say this ranks up there with Carusos. Astonishing: can't stop listening to it.

    This is to me the greatest performance of this great operatic aria I have ever heard. Mario Lanza is magnificent here. The emotions he displays here, and the acting is so gut wrenching it brings tears to my eyes when I watch this. Brilliant!

    MARIO LANZA DID MORE FOR OPERA THAN ANY OF THE SINGERS OF THE TIME
    THE SHEER BEAUTY OF HIS SINGING SHOULD NEVER BE FORGOTTEN. IT
    IS A VOCAL LESSON TO ALL SINGERS.

    Actuar!
    Act! While in delirium, I no longer know what I say, or what I do! And yet it's necessary... make an effort! Bah! Are you not a man? You are a clown! Put on your costume, powder your face. The people pay to be here, and they want to laugh. And if Harlequin shall steal your Columbina, laugh, clown, so the crowd will cheer! Turn your distress and tears into jest, your pain and sobbing into a funny face -- Ah! Laugh, clown, at your broken love! Laugh at the grief that poisons your heart! 😥

    the best tenor of the twentieth century. the purists will have you believe otherwise. his willingness to use popular media to engage the general public, apparently diminishes his ability. ? he interprets his roles with a broken heart, the catch in his voice that no other could hope to achieve. compare metronomes to heartbeats.

    I've heard many people knock Lanza for not having persued an operatic stage career.. But, just imagine if he'd had.. These movies most likely wouldn't of been made.. The millions of people turned on to the operatic classics by way of Lanza introducing the best tenor arias via cinema - wouldn't have happened.. Culture would have suffered.. Thank God, Lanza, had his sixth sense.. and steered himself cinema-operatically into the stuff of legend..

      it's amazing that a singer who passed away so long ago still captures the imagination of millions. It is a testimony to Mario Lanza's fantastic talent. It was a splendid but short lived career filled with passion and success and some difficult times. At the end, Lanza was back on his way up and was among the most popular entertainers of his era. I recommend reading A KID FROM PHILADELPHIA, MARIO LANZA, THE VOICE OF THE POETS, and to listen to him as you read the beautiful essays that are a homage to a star who is still with us and will always be with us.

    I love this version, my favourite version is enrico Caruso because it was sung so perfectly, I like this version better than Pavarotti's, people say that her over acts in this performance but I think it's more that Pavarotti doesn't act or change his facial expression much, it's too clinical, because this song is so sad his wife ran off with another guy and someone just told him this when he is about to perform his act, and he is singing about how can he go on with the show but realizes it does and Mario lanza captures the emotion of someone who's wife had left him. Don't get me wrong pavarotti sings cleaner than Mario lanza but Mario has so much more emotion in his performance and his singing.

    • @pndragon1
      @pndragon1 9 років тому +3

      YES! That is exactly it! Caruso bears his soul, it resonates every fibre. Lanza's voice is richer in tone (could be the superior recording process). Pavarotti's performance IS clinical. FLAT... I believe he was the result of technique and did not live the part for fear it would harm his instrument. Until I heard the tears, felt the pain and lived the anguish of Caruso's performance I did not appreciate Opera. On stage there is a difference between being the character and playing the character. Caruso was real, Pavarotti, a mask. Lanza is somewhere in between, but more on the "being" than the "playing" side. Lanza comes close to Caruso at the end of the song and it's good. Caruso grabs you with the first note. As you said...perfection. Cheers!

    • @PumaO1
      @PumaO1 9 років тому +1

      pndragon1 I think Pavarotti version is a tiny bit better that Mario because if you look closer pav is portraying a delusional man filled with anger and sadness his face might have been plain in emotions but his eyes drifted off to where his 2 world's meet the performing and his personal life (in the play) with no make up on, which gives a slightly better emotion on Mario's.... But hey love both performances.

    Dilecto colega , Permitame expresarme en estos términos, no soy un conyector ni pretendo confitar florilegios, bajo ningún concepto he tradado de faltarle al respeto al gran maestro Kraus, poseedor de una de las mas equilibradas e impecables técnicas del Bel canto, tanto como Bjorling, wunderlich, Gigli etc.
    Pero me refería a su espíritu gallardo ,vertical e impasible al interpretar con una naturalidad pasmosa , ya que siempre se critica a Lanza de ser en extremo sanguíneo y emocional.

  • @roxalysmendez7941
    @roxalysmendez7941 11 років тому +1

    Admiro a Corelli como uno de los tenores mas versátiles , pero de ninguna manera , su versión es mejor que la de Lanza, la expresividad, la gallardía el colorido , timbre de una inaudita belleza, su gran rango vocal, Lanza podía cantar con el portento de Caruso y la sublimeza y la gracia de Gigli y el inefable caracter de Kraus o la claridad prístina de Wunderlich, aspectos que definitivamente a mi humilde entender no hubiese podido abordar el maestro Corelli.

I spend many hours on you tube listening to "other tenors" and although most of them are fantastic both past and present but how many could sing opera and the "Student Prince" with equal ease. I think Joseph Calleja is probably heading in that direction. Mario still has fan clubs all over the world and is still revered much.

    I started listening to Mario when I was about 14,. as I was drifting into a gang on the streets on the south side of Chicago. My parents bought a cabinet victrola and radio and a few records at the local Sears store. I was blown away listening to The Great Caruso and Student Prince, and since my sister worked at the local theater, I got to see the movies more than once. Then at home, I would lay with my head in the cabinet doors with the volume pegged (which is one of the reasons probably I wear hearing aids.) I offer that sacrifice willingly. This was before guns and drugs and business gangs. A lot of drinking and a little posturing between The 120th Street Boys (mostly from the South, with some Irish and Polish, some of who had wrestled pigs and chopped wood) and the Bumtown Gents (largely Italians, who were also supposed to be tough, I don't know why.) All just lost kids in a culture that was only becoming bizarre.
    I would imagine myself standing on the counter in Joniacs corner store, singing Pagliacci to my JD friends--or maybe "Cielo y Mar" and Mario's voice was pouring into me. I listened to him through the years when I could; so you can imagine, the invention of the the iPod was a miraculous revolution, akin to Johnny Tillotson singing "Poetry in Motion" as I walked across the West Pullman Park listening to my little black transistor radio. I'd lose Mario for a few years in the heat of life, but always he would return; and it is only now at 71 that I understand how his skilled and brilliant power poured into my heart when I was a weak and vulnerable child, in a confusing world--and how this living and vibrant power filled me and sustained me through those spare times and then through a rich and vibrant life. Mario, I am sad that you did not grow old. Yet you still live, if anyone does, Viva Mario Lanza!! Que Canta Mario!!!

    Lanza's interpretation of this aria is transcendent. Mario Del Monaco and Bjorling have gorgeous versions also.

    Couldnt agree more, a unique talent whom I hope will never be forgotten. A special thanks to You Tube for sharing all his wonderful recordings.Most tenors before and since were maybe more technically gifted but Mario sang from his heart, just how a tenor should sing. I think the greatest living tenor must be Domingo and of the newer crop Joseph Calleja stands out for me.

    i was shocked that what seemed to have been a light romantic comedy.turned into Lanza singing a beautifully haunting heavy aura which opera legends like would also cover.
