Definitely the tip when using design space in adding the size/shape of what your applying vinyl to. It really helps so much. I have a question though...so I'm very new to my cricut & I'm about to do my 1st layered htv shirt. It's just regular htv, no glitter. It only has 4 colors but the way I have it now is I contoured the 1st layer to make it solid black, then I have the other layers of colors. Should I slice that out though so it's not layering multiple pieces of vinyl on top of vinyl?

Thats how the curve feature works. If you make changes to the text such as move the letters closer Design Space I believe sees it as a image now not text.
