- Classic Game Room reviews ROAD RASH for the Panasonic 3DO from Electronic Arts released in 1994. Featuring music from Soundgarden, Monster Magnet, Paw and more, this uber-90's style grungefest meets combat vehicular racing video game is one of the best console racers ever made!!! Smooth driving and awesome gameplay make Road Rash a must have for 3DO fans and a must get for fans of the series who enjoyed the games on the Sega Genesis and other game consoles. This CGR video review of Road Rash on Panasonic 3DO has gameplay from Road Rash recorded from Panasonic 3DO game console. If you can find a working 3DO buy this game!!
This may well be the most 90's video game ever made. Everything, from the packaging, art design and the music, is so 1990's that it hurts. Amazing =D
Бро ты прав, не было больше таких игр, в которых залипали, ну может мортал и то относительно.
I had the 3DO. Great system and game for back in the early 90’s! I had to buy Road Rash again on the PS1, which works good on the first Generation PS3! 👍
RIP Chris Cornell, legendary voice ..........
I love the little noise when you bonk them on the head :-)
I still have my 3DO from 94,with Road Rash!!!!
Got Stoned, and Drunk many Times with that Game.
Aceman2112 amen
I,m sorry, that menu artwork rocks!!
I miss beating Rhonda's ass LOL
Respect to the reviewer, this game was definitely one of my all-time favorites on the 3DO. I have so many fond memories of the sound that is played when you repeatedly whack another biker in the head with the batan LOLOL. the 3DO was so underrated with certainly more than a few games of video games. Road Rash, Offworld Interceptor (or anything Crystal Dynamics on the 3DO), Gex, Need for Speed, Way of the Warrior, Return Fire, Crash & Burn, dang I need to go find a working 3DO and buy those games all over again for it!
I think getting a working 3DO in eBay (especially in used condition) would cost about $50 or more.
I absolutely love this version of Road Rash. In a brilliant move it was ported to the PC, where these days it runs at high framerate (smoother) and higher resolution (crisper and clearer).
Yes, all of the videos and music are present in the PC port, so you can experience the complete awesomeness of this Road Rash version without hunting for the rare 3DO.
This game delivers the most crazy giggles I've ever experienced from a game. I want to buy the rights to the IP and make a sequel.
+rootbeer666 Too bad the PC version uses midi for the music..not a .cda
+Fix Ya Games All lot of people do not know that about the 3DO. It has higher sound quality than all other consoles of the time.
...Nobody stops you from having a Roland MIDI card on the PC. It will wipe the floor with everything else. But yes, 3DO had good sound.
rootbeer666 I had a Roland MIDI daughtercard on my Sound Blaster 16 back then and it was not better.
+Domspun Road Rash is a Windows game, and Windows uses software MIDI by default, so it should sound the same (quite poor) on all machines unless you change the default MIDI device... Chances are you did not use your Roland module.
The best use of music in a game I've ever experienced.
The 3DO would have been so fucking awesome except for 2 problems
1--It was expensive as fuck
2--hardly any good games besides Road Rash and Gex and Pebble Beach Golf and Need for Speed
R.I.P. Chris Cornell.
just in case you don't know, this game is getting remade and you can buy it right now.

This was the best game I owned for the Panasonic 3DO. The system support died out pretty fast but it had unparalleled graphics in a console at the time. This game with that killer addictive soundtrack made this so much fun. I still for my 3DO too.
+No Newfriends I just recently scored Road Rash on Ebay just today. For a good price in the box with the manual. I have always had it on PS1, and the Genesis. But I don't know why I never got it on the 3DO. It is way better, for sure. And did you know you have a handlebar gauge view while racing? I remember seeing that back in '94 when it was displayed at Best Buy. Blew my mind!
lightsouthaha Yeah thanks. I already had Need for Speed for years. Just had to get Road Rash to complete what I needed. And I agree that NFS was a cool and well designed game. A shame they didn't port it the same on PS1. Though they had some extra tracks and things like that.
Damn, Muhammed from Qatar. You must be a really cool guy.
I had this game for PC. I spent hours playing this game back in the day.
I had this game for the PC and it was the sane exact thing! Probably the game I most played EVER! Road Rash is definitely my favorite game of all time!
love road rash 1 & 2 but HATE when they switched to this AWEFUL mortal combat style graphic garbage. Thank god they at least redeemed the series on the n64. the last of a great series. wish it was still a big modern franchise today.
I remember this game on the PC. This rocked my socks--especially the in-game artwork!
Road Rash for the win!
how could EA screw up any rash games after this masterpiece? BY going 3d, such an easy formula and they just couldn't replicate or top this even though they were on more advanced hardware
My near 20 year old 3DO shit the bed last year. A lot of Road Rash was played on that thing, rest in peace 3DO.
I still have my 3do and it works fine. I remember grinding the hell out of this game trying to get the fastest bike
The menu art was awesome!
Way better on PC, way way better.
Just get the PC version, it's pretty much the same thing.
Loved this game! I couldn't afford it buy my uncle had it and fostered my love for Soundgarden! Thumbs up to the reviewer for saying he wished it had Alice in Chains music! AIC to me was the best grunge band, but Soundgarden is always awesome. I loved this game!
Just set up my game room and was looking for a new game to play. I have this. Never played it. Only played genesis ones. It's next on my list!
Someone in Qatar had a working 3do? Man what are the chances of that
the music videos on the 3do version were really special indeed, just wait at the intro for just for a short moment and a video called Jessie will play...shame ya didn't add that on the review.
Mohamed from Quatar for President 2020!
I played it on the PC and it was amazing.... images of the people in the menus freak me the fuck out though.
the first REKT in a videogame
The 3DO is one of the most robust console I own, particularly the monster FZ-1 by Panasonic.
I found a guy at a flea market selling a 3do for $100 with two controllers and a stack of what appears to be burned (bootleg cd-r) games. Anybody know if it's a decent deal? It's been sitting in a display case for months so I don't think it's going anywhere soon. What's a good price to talk him down to if $100 is too expensive?
they usually sell for more than that with just one controller
it's still there. i'm going to try to make a deal with him this weekend for $80. i'll see what happens. thanks.
it wasnt a bad system, the full motion video in a few of the games was a bit annoying...it was way overpriced and that killed it.If you can grab it for 80 and it works fine, you pretty much stole it
netrioter Honestly, I'm just a huge road rash fan and the 3do version is the only one I haven't played. Its worth $80 to me just to play that game alone. Plus, I'm aware that it was a pretty good system. Only had one friend that had one growing up due to the price.
RS7JR its worth 80 bucks by itself...its as good as the PSX version....youll like it
Road rash is my all time favourite game
Insane game for the time
This game is also for PC which is 10x better.
Road Rash on 3DO rocks, you should also review Need for speed on 3DO, the handling was way ahead of anything else at the time and it had crash damage on licensed vehicles! After that you should review Virtuoso to see how far apart the realms of gaming can be on one console. Road Rash 3DO for GOTY 2011!!!!
Nice review and agree the 3DO's was the best version ever! If it has not been mentioned in previous comments, Sega CD's version of Road Rash had the same soundtrack, menus, and live action cut-scenes (of slightly lesser clarity) but with game play very similar in looks to Road Rash 3 on the Genesis.
Panasonic wasn't the only one who made 3DOs. Goldstar did as well (which is the one that I have), and Sanyo released a model (in Japan only). AT&T had announced that they would make one as well, but never did.
Road Rash is best played on a 3DO - no question. :)
STAY AWESOME! :)
i think when you do the math for the kind of hoprsepower and abilities that the 3DO could do (at it's best), it was a more powerful machine that the PS1. Ahead of it's time but too pricey, hence why we aren't playing the Panasonic Xbox or a 3DO 3D or something today
Turns out this is the same version that's on the PC, I remember it from back in the day. If you anyone wants to check it out and save themself the trouble of finding a 3DO, just get it on PC.
I like the N-64 version a lot better than the PS1 version. Never played the PS1 sequel though, or this 3DO version. I wouldn't mind owning a 3DO but they are just so damn expensive!
That blows my mind. Since so many other games were the same on both the 3DO and PC, I figure the two versions of Road Rash might also be similar. I wonder how they messed this game up.
I'm looking forward to your 3DO reviews! Personally, I think the 3DO system is underated. I had the Goldstar version and it was great! If you can, please review "Samurai Shodown"
Or, I could just get the PS1 version to get the same awesome Road Rash game for about 1/100th of the price (seriously, most PS1s here cost about £5, 3DOs upwards to £500.)
I loved this game. I was one of first one to pre-order this from Diehard Games, and I played it for 10+ hours every day. today I don't own the 3DO, but I have the PlayStation and Sega Saturn versions of this same game and they play the same. FTWIW Dept.
The epitome of all racing console game
I loved my Goldstar 3DO. But sadly the system died a lonely death. However, in my opinion the version of Return Fire is THE BEST one out there. Long live CGR: Godfather of the video game review shows!
Love this game. I just played it again less than an hour ago. Great way to unwind before bed. BTW I bought my 3DO used for around $40 and this game (along with Gex) came packed in with it. Nice!
But it was the goofiest thing ever in FF7, i had to contain my laughter as the graphics sporadically got higher quality then lower quality
The best ROAD RASH game ever :D
Haha, Paw's Dragline was the first CD I ever bought, and it was all because of this game. Nobody I knew had ever even heard of them.
RIP Chris Cornell :(
This was a top notch 3D0 game, wish I had a 3D0, one of the few retro consoles I dont already have I'd like to get my hands on.
It was my joy during childhood in the Panasonic. Thanks for sharing!
Actually the Playstation version of this game ran faster, smoother and it was an early title.
In '94 I grabbed this system and game right after I read the first review of it. I wasn't disappointed - it was amazing. This game got me into Soundgarden and grunge music in general. A few months ago I dusted the system off (I still have it and it still works) and hooked it up to my 106" projection theater. Thankfully my receiver has an S-Video input! The pixels were as big as my fist but I enjoyed every minute.
My favorite Road Rash to this day, so much so I own two copies (one CIB and one just missing the game disc but w/ the soundtrack CD) but after recently playing the PS1 version I still don't understand why the ESRB rating on the case was T for Teen but the disc itself was stamped K-A??? The 3DO version had NO rating but just a box saying Warning Contains Mature Themes... Oh yeah that was the fetal days of Janet Reno's overly programmed evil ESRB perhaps?
if you were lucky enough to play RoadRash on a 3DO in 94, you know what i mean when i say there still hasnt been a system/ game combo so ahead of it's time. i was broke as joke in them days (i was around 9 yrs old), but i had a friend with extremely rich parents. not only did he have the 3DO, but he also had a massive big screen tv as well. it was literally pure heaven to play this game for hours on end. i still would put it in the top 10 most awesome/ ahead-of-its-time games i ever played...
You are not kidding. This was a fantastic game back in the day. Still loads of fun to play if you like racing games. I got a 3DO for Christmas in '94. I was really lucky. It bit the dust around '98 or so. I bout a used unit on ebay. It worked for about 2mos. and then crapped out for the same reason at the first. Boy was it hard to sell it (it still kinda worked) along with the 50 or so games I had. PAINFUL. Road Rash 2 on Playstation was as good as this. Maybe even a bit better.
Who cares if you owned a Ps1, the 3do was in a league of its own for years before Sony came along. Even with all their "awesomeness" Ps1 couldn't even do decent conversions of the 3do games. By the time mommy and daddy had bought you a ps1 the 3do had already been there, done it and wrote 32bit gaming history. The 3do M2 console would have crushed everything had it been released at a time when Gran Tourismo was just launched. Long live Road Rash. Long live 3do!!
To the person reviewing this game.
YOU SIR SPEAK NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH!
I still have my 3DO hooked up. Why? Road Rash. No one will ever remake this game in it's glory. EA would be far to scared to release game in today's market. I don't think high speed inner city motorcycle races, beating the hell out of each other while running other innocent pedestrians (I love running over the old lady with the walker) and beating the police up would get any good reception by the media.
Oh yeah, Mark @inecomcompany. I know you say that this game looks and plays great on the 3D0. And it does. I think you should review some first generation PS1 games though. No one EVER mentions ths PS1 first generation games and they are TRULY different than the end of the PS1 cycle.
What I really wanted to say was, TRY THE PS1 PORT of this Road Rash. Or at least look at it on UA-cam. I actually laughed out loud because Ironically, it's mostly the same except with a better frame rate ;-).
pt 3 - final. -
"I did not know that it was" ... such a rare console and have always regretted that trade. I thought everyone had a TG-16 like I did. Fresh off this underdog status though, I ended up beliving the hype for the Atari Jaguar and wanted one while my friend wanted a 3D0. I ended up having a friend who got the 3D0, and one who got the Jaguar, instead, based off my recommendation. Oops. I'm sure they don't forgive ME., heh.
pt 2. - I was lucky enough to have a TG-16/PC-Engine thanks to my brother who got duped, somehow, into buying one. I I may or may have not had my beloved SNES at the time already. Either way, my brother was not the sort of person to buy a system that was such an underdog... In fact, I ended up LOVING the TG-16 but selling it for an entire set of X-Men trading cards from like 1993. It's one of only two decisions that I ever highly regret, video game wise. I did not know that it was (see pt. 3)
When I was a kid I was dumb. Before the N64 or Ps1 were announced, my friend and I were discussing next generation systems. We knew about the Jaguar and 3d0 but it seemed like they didn't/couldn't actually exist.
Think about it (from 8 year olds perspective) do you know anyone who actually owns one? Hell, do you know anyone who has actually played one?
I also bought into the hype.Coming fresh off the underdog system experience I had with my TurboGrafx-16 (My brother was buying one) - see pt 2
@LondonOntGuy That said, I've tried the game out again recently and it's mysteriously working a lot better than it used to after a few resets. FMVs still jack up after 8 or so seconds and the menus are extremely slow to manuoever still for some weird reason, but I was able to play two levels of the game a-OK. I even came 1st in the second level I played so...it MUST be getting better. I don't know, maybe my 3DO's just self-aware. It's weird how it works. xD
@LondonOntGuy I've burned LOADS of games for the 3DO, I know doing that's completely legal nowadays as both the console and the company behind the console are no more and don't sell these titles for profit anymore so you could consider them abandonware...but the thing is my copy of "Road Rash" isn't a burn't copy. It's a legitimate one brought straight off of eBay *and* I had it removed of the disc's scratches so...blergh. O_O I dunno.
HOLY SHIT. I have a 3DO since last August and it's very off-and-on with how it deals with games with load of full-motion video so some games work and some games don't or don't as well as they should. "Road Rash", sadly, only loads for me once in a blue moon and even then barely works if I can somehow get through the opening video sequence...
...but this video makes me want to try over and over. SO BADLY. >8D
@bpotts0401If they put one out, I'm sure it is! This game is really really good, and anyone should experience it if they have a chance. Best $5 I've spent this past month, I've been playing this game every weekend since I bought it, and placed all the other games I own on the back burner for the time being. The menus suck, and that's about the only bad thing I've seen in this game, get over that and you have a real gem.
Thanks man, also if anyone has any doubts about the 3DO's 3D capability, check out Star Fighter, it looks so much better than the versions put out on other consoles. Unfortunately though there were a LOT of bad games for the 3DO too, but the good ones are real treasures. If anyone is planning on getting a 3DO, do NOT buy the "Goldstar" version, my buddy went through 2 of those, both of them broke. The actually Panasonic version which is smaller and looks more like a ps1 is more reliable.
Gotta love the coconut sound when smacking cops and racers in the head, hilarious! Also there's some hidden Easter eggs, try slowly driving up and bumping a pedestrian without knocking them down, they drop their pants and make funny expressions. If you do the same to the cows, they stand on their hind legs and dance around! There are even more if you look hard enough, try it out and see what you find! You can totally tell the developers made this game with extra care to add all of that!
The 3DO's was nasty, it just didn't get the proper support like Sony or Sega. The 3DO fighting games like samurai showdown ran better than anything besides the neo geo itself. I was lucky enough to have a buddy growing up who had Road Rash on 3DO and was totally blown away. It even had this 3D space ship shooter that looked way better than Warhawk on ps1, it even had the most awesome cheeseball live actio sci-fi cutscenes. I just can't remember the name though, hopefully Mark will review it!
fun fact..the 16k sport bike the DMG, if you hold the brake and gas button while driving this beast, it speeds you up to aboutt 160 or more if you can get a straight line, hehe only bike that does that, along with that, when u win, the biker puts hands up x2 longer then usual. Plus, the IA if you beat on them during lower levels they get angrier n hurt you more as u go up, if your nice, their nice and dont touch you. you can have an angry and tough game if you club everyone
Awesome, awesome game... I'm happy I'm not the only one who enjoys it a lot! :D
but two things... first, there's the Sega CD and PC versions... don't know if they're as great as the 3DO version (only played the PC port... and I have very fond memories of it :D), but there's no excuse why you didn't play this before! ^^
Second: kudos for the 3DO! It's always great to have a new system available for reviewing games, but come on... the 3DO wasn't that great :P very cool nonetheless ;)
Yes! YES! YES!!! This was one of my all time favorite games...until it's sequel-sequel came out, Road Rash: Jail Break.
And, this game came out on the fore mentioned "inferior" console, the PlayStation. And, unless I'm not seeing something, the PS port is equal to this 3DO version.
Sure, the first wave of PSx games had some horrible unmentionables. But, Electronic Arts pulls out true power.
I also agree. We need a modern Road Rash. Jail Break can't be the series's aging swan song.
word of advice on the 3DO, my late father won a GoldStar(LG) 3DO in a poker game back in the day, and they where not as reliable, as the Panasonic models of the 3DO, but where cheaper, and he also won "Plumbers Don't Wear Ties", and that game gave me nightmares, I sadly don't have the machine, as my exstepmother, took it when they split, and god only knows what she did with it. :-( so in collusion stick with the Panasonic models, even if it's the top loading model, and skip the Goldstar.
What a shame. Panasonic were way ahead of their time and priced themselves out of the market.
does anyone know if they have a panasonic 3DO emulator?? i have a modded original XBOX with NES, SNES, SEGA, N64 and a few PS1 games, and i wonder if it would be possible to, somehow, get RoadRash from 3DO added? anyone who has any info on this, i would appreciate any advice you could give me on whether or not it's possible and how i would go about achieving it? thanks.
Pound for pound the 3do was well ahead of the 486 pc and really shouldn't share the same comment box. Ever. The 3do is so sophisticated that my high end gaming pc cant even emulate it properly. Solid, heavy well built machine, my 3do is still working perfectly since '93. Go on Evilbay, get a 3do and get educated.
3DO games are extreme, let me tell you why, the good ones are absolutely amazing, the bad ones are an utter piece of crap, you get one or the other never something so-so, but it is actually a good idea to get a 3do just for the good games (which are actually fuckin amazing, no other word to describe them)
moments, but the N64 version is a horrible game all together. Those 2 bad games are probably the reason so developers lost interest in this series. They need to stick to what works, Japanese sportbikes, running over pedestrians, beating clubbing and wipping other racers and cops with clubs and chains, great collisions, funny cutscenes, and SOUNDGARDEN!!
I remember when the 3DO was released in the UK, it cost £500. This version looks better than the PS version, was the 3DO more powerful that the PS? Even though the 3DO flopped, Panasonic was working on the M2 which was never released. EA have knocked out a lot of Need for Speed games, but no new Road Rash games which I think is shocking.
"I don't think the early PlayStation games ran this smoothly." Except the port of this game to the PlayStation that was pretty-much identical, as was Need for Speed, and they were 2 of the first games I had for the system. Both were also on PC around the same time.
Like Tarantino films the use of music gets you right into the vibe of it all. I could go for watching Singles again then playing this on my 3do. Ride that white line all the way to the top n' bust up some cops on the way...I'm gona break my , I'm gona break my rusty cage...and burn!
It's funny how he said that it was only on 3do, but if my memory serves my correct, it was also available on ps1 also. and yes it is the same as on sega saturn. but this is by far the best of the series, no rash game before or after could ever stand up to this version, best rah ever hands down.
Muhammad, may he win all games, is the great prophet of the video game god Lord Karnage. Through his Holy UA-cam channel, the InecomCompany, Muhammad (peace be upon his donations) makes his prophecies from Mark so we may understand the true meaning of VIDEO GAMES.
Actually Mark this IS THE GAME that SOLD ME INTO A PS1 b/c a buddy of mine stayed the night and we played the shit outta it... But then I realized quickly I've played this on the GENESIS? but w/ the music and shit it is AWESOME! MINISTRY BLACK FLAG or DEAD KENNEDY'S WOULD BE SUPER EDITION...
By the way, you can pick up this version of Road Rash for ps1 and play it on ps3, I just bought mine for $5! Though it's not as smooth and the controls aren't quite as crisp as the 3DO version, it still kicks ass, you must buy this game for your PS3 if you own one!
Oh man this totally brings back memories...I remember playing this on my aunt's PC back in the day when she gave me the game as a gift. I loved it, won all the races and got the fastest bike....ah yes...other 8 year olds may have had a childhood, but I had roadrash 3d. Nuff' said.
I agree the 3DO was the best version but don't mislead what Dolby Surround actually was back then. It was more like having 3.0. You had the two stereo channels up front and your rear speakers worked in tandem for "atmosphere" fill in.
So glad the 90s are gone. I hate the visual style. I don't mean the graphics in this game, just the whole vibe from everythng from the early 90s, TV commercials, movies, music videos. There's just something that seems very cheap about it.
I owned this game when it came out. The only real issie i had with it was that the licenced music only played in the menus. I wish they had the instrumental versions to go with the gameplay. But by far the best version of the game. Excellent GET!
3DO reviews? Nice. I never had one myself, but it's always fun seeing stuff from the wild west days of the 90's, back when everyone and their mother were making consoles.
Hopefully we see some Jaguar titles as well. Hey, it's Atari after all.
This looks like an excellent version of Road Rash but I still think Road Rash 64 is superior. Gloriously funny collision physics, increased choice of weapons and 4 player split-screen multiplayer. Awesome!
@ItsNotaToyYT
Try playing a game off a CD-R. Far as I know, it like the Sega CD doesn't have any protection so playing burned games won't be a problem. - It's not like CD-R's and burners were common place in 1994. xD
This game is like a shotgun shot of awesomness to your face, then the awesomeness rebuilds your face a travels thorugh the rest of you body!! Finally your body can't take it anymore and you blow up into a nuke of awesomness!!
it was released for PC, PSX and Saturn also, oh and it ran more smoothly on those consoles, this one looks a bit jerky compared to those, especially the PC version with its 640x480 resolution compared to the 320x240 on the PSX.
I've still got the Win95 version which is exactly the same. Love it. Still fun today.
I still have my 3DO and my Road Rash, and a gang of other badass games. It still works perfectly, I got it from my father from when he got it when he was a teenager. He said it was $600 when he got it!
