Quincy Jones was featured several times in the video. When you have a genius like Quincy calling Jacob a genius, you wonder what “genius” even is. Jacob will move music forward and go down in musical history as one of the masters of time.

The amazing thing about Moon River is that it is pure tonal. That's why it is all vocal. (If you accompany with a piano it would move away from its tonality, because our tonal system is basically out of tune - it's a compromise).

    • @AliothSenator
      @AliothSenator 4 роки тому +6

@@drdalet It actually shifts the A reference tone at 440hz to 427hz by the final two minutes. Then he increases the pitch to 450hz or smth. establishing a new A4=450hz. He plays a lot with microtonal phrasing, you can listen to similar things in Hideaway, Djesse title track, and in a bunch of songs from Vol.2. The guy is actually using very complex music ideas in a way that's easy to hear, it's even hard to discern if you don't know music theory. Fuck I love Jacob.

I understand what you are saying about Jacob's voice tone, it's unusual but it's one of the many things I love about his music. I'm attracted to uniqueness and I think he really makes his voice work in his music, especially his originals such as "Time To Rest Your Weary Head", "Hideaway", or "Make Me Cry". Maybe it's because I don't have previous versions by other artists in my head? I do understand how people can not be a huge fan of it though.

Jacob not singing these arrangements???? All the vocal harmonies all the arrangements everything is predicated off of Jacob singing. His vocal Licks and improvisational ideas are incredible as a singer. He has a style the same way Harry Connick Michael Bublé Norah Jones and any of the other signature singers. The longer one listens to him the more you’ll understand the subtleties and even the incredible singing abilities he has over many other singers who at first glance you would think were the better singers. I know your comments are about his tone even that is so different and unique. He’s so next level at times it’s hard to even comprehend. But as he’s been continuing to do it and no doubt will be moving out even more in the future. He’ll just keep blowing people away totally out of the water. And his singing is going to be part of it. It’s really easy to see that he could have a career to doing movie soundtracks producing other artists all of those things no doubt they’re going to happen. he will also be able to be a solo artist himself as he proves over and over again. He’s unstoppable!

I understand the tone difference thing, but you know what I love? I LOVE the fact that he's owning it and doing it. I also feel ( could be wrong) that to him his voice is an instrument he uses to get out what he hears in his head. I think in Moon River he laid down 5000 tracks of vocals. Can you even imagine trying to convey that to someone else to do for you? Gah! As a creative myself, I totally get needing to link what is in your head to the outside!

Hey, nice one, I am one of Jacob's Cult Leader and as for your critique I get it you got valid points even though Jacob's voice is pleasing for a lot of ears which means most of the voices are prompt to personal preferences which make me think that despite you think you don't know how to sing or you don't like what comes out of your singing that might just be a bias of yourself critique or critiques that other put into you, which I invite you to rethink that because probably you got a good voice that could be welcome by many ears around the Globe, what I most love about Jacob is when he expresses that everybody needs to let themselves be free of constrains when outputting their musicality, your music should be an expression of you not a reflection of others.

If you hear him speak then its pretty darn close to how his speaking voice sounds as well so i'd say that's just naturally what he sounds like - as opposed to some singers who put on a different sounding voice for example, to imitate singers they want to emulate usually.

I have heard that crit many many times and I hear what y'all are talking about, I assume regarding his solo singing as opposed to his harmony singing, which is spectacular in every way. But over time I just see all of the sound output he generates as one big thing.... "Jacob Collier's musical imagination", and suddenly the thin ex-boy soprano tone quality of his singing just becomes irrelevant, I just become in the thrall of this volcano of his genius.

I have, since this reaction, looked at some of that,..I am not a theory wiz just know enough to get by so I get lost, but great to see all of it and how his mind works. I like his "teaching harmony in 5 levels" vid...
As far as the voice crit, it is yes, only about his solo sound...I mentioned myself as the same...I can sing some harmony and that is okay but if I sing that SAME harmony solo it sounds horrible...it is just a preference thing...Cheers!@

He didn't do the video editing for Moon River, he had that done by someone else. But nonetheless still great artist.
If you're gonna react to that Moon River video, after you're done talking and giving your take on it you should give this video to watch, not to react to, but just for yourself. So you're a bit more in the 'know' about the whole music theory/tuning theory of jacob collier's songs.
      ua-cam.com/video/NHC2XNGerW4/v-deo.html&
Yes, Music Theory/Tuning Theory is rocket science.
June Lee, who's famous in the jacob collier community for transcribing jacob's music down onto music sheets interviewed him and was really thorough about asking the right questions.
      ua-cam.com/video/DnBr070vcNE/v-deo.html
If you're looking to understand Jacob's music more, it would be through June Lee's transcription videos of Jacob's songs and his 3 part interview.

@@captainmorgan1978 I had the same reaction at first, but his solo voice has grown on me. Not to, y'know Otis or Marvin Gaye levels, or anything, but to the point where I hear it and it's welcome to my ears. Becky Stark was the same way, back in the day. Plus Jacob deals in the dark arts of microtonality, and Just Temperament, which is absolute Wizard-level for me.

Moon River is even better, if you can even compare the ridiculously great to the stupifyingly great. With just the two songs alone he convinced me that he's the greatest musician of my lifetime, and I go back to the 50s. I've listened to each at least 50 times, and they never get old. He's a monster.

Yeah, Jacob's vocal tone is hit or miss with a lot of people, don't worry. This was a wonderful review of the song since you had a different perspective coming from mainly Take Six.

I think you may be picking up the different vowel sounds between an American (Take 6) accent, and a British RP accent. Also, his early singing career was as a boy treble in opera - a very different sound from what you may be used to hearing. I love his voice, but then, I'm British and grew up singing choral music.
