  • Historically, railroads were critically important to small towns. They brought in goods and supplies and hauled out agricultural products and manufactured goods. The Milwaukee Railroad heavily invested in Montevideo, Minnesota, installing stockyards, a large train yard, and a roundhouse. As a transcontinental railroad, the Milwaukee Road was a major competitor in its prime. Although this railroad no longer exists, many historical features and structures still remain in Montevideo. The Milwaukee Road Heritage Center in Montevideo preserves this space, does restorations, and provides tours. Come along for a walk around the roundhouse grounds.

My grandfather was the roundhouse foreman in Monte. He retired in the late 60’s. He started his career as a young boy hauling water for the workers. He saw the transition from steam to diesel. My mom would ride the turn table some nights with him.

We will never see a railroad as varied, colorful, and just plain neat like this ever again.

Around 1958-'59, when I was a little kid, I had a pair of bibs with a Milwaukee Road patch on them. I loved them and was very sad when I outgrew them. My Grandpa, an uncle and a great uncle all worked for the Burlington at the time. My folks would put me on the Zephyr at the station in the cities and I would ride by myself down to visit my grandparents in Illinois (starting when I was 7 years old, how times have changed!) I came back on the Zephyr through the great flood of 1965, what a sight! Thanks for this awesome video, I enjoy all your work but the train stuff has a special place in my heart..

I like Monte. It is an interesting town. It must have been the Division HQ having all of those assets there. One-time years ago, in the late 80s or early 90s, we stayed at the Best Western downtown. That was fun. We had dinner downtown, had drinks in a friendly little bar downstairs from the hotel. I think it was part of the Best Western. Then, we walked up to the room. Never even had to get in the car once the whole night. They have an interesting Prairie Village there with the old style Lutheran Church. It has the event sign written in part Swedish, part English. It reminded me of the old Swedish Lutheran Church in Walnut Grove that my Dad attended.

Thank you. Really nice work, too. The old Milw sign (at 2:43) reminds me of when I enlisted in the US Navy ('64) and sent to Illinois for bootcamp. To get there, from Mpls I was to take an overnight Milwaukee passenger to Chicago, and so had entered the Depot there under this sign. As the leading F units (?) pulled out of the yard and rumbled over the numerous points and frogs there, I could see the faint yet friendly glow of the many lighted switch lamps passing by my window. Once on the Milwaukee mainline, the train continued on to St. Paul where the tracks then followed the Mississippi south to Winona, crossing the river there to Chicago, and where I would then transfer on to Waukegan. This would be where the Great Lakes Naval Training Ctr was located, just west of Lk Michigan in Illinois. Eleven weeks later and following graduation, to save what little money I'd been paid I stupidly took a Greyhound (milk run) back to MN on Christmas leave. And what a mistake that was, as the 500 mile bus trip home had been way too cramped and bumpy, and in the dark of night not much fun either. It also took nearly twice the time to get there as by train.

Neat video! Glad to see that some of the equipment looks nicely preserved; but it was almost painful to see the remains of at least 2 of the famed Skytop Lounges in there.
Looking at the area from Google Earth, it appears that the mainline through there is preserved (operational?) & I am assuming still connected to the rest of the national rail network? If so, who is the current operator? I know large sections of the Milwaukee Road mainline were pulled up (the Hiawatha Rail Trail for example), but others were acquired by nearby railroads.
