  • This is mostly for owners of LHD 2WD sidecars. The introduction of a sidecar on the left and still having 2WD was a significant challenge for the Ural Team.
At the end of the day though there was a price to be paid. The interchangeability of wheels across all 3 corners remains. But, with the new FD design, a new bigger diameter rear axle was required.
This meant the "Pusher" and the spare were compatible, but the front and SC axles retained their original smaller diameter. Not allowing a direct swap with the spare. The solution developed by Ural was a set of sleeves to be installed on the spare should it be required to replace a front of SC wheel. In any event, the disc carrier had to be swapped out and part of that was to install a long reducing sleeve in that side. For the spline side. The spline boss must be removed to allow a special short sleeve to be installed behind it. Similar to the existing arrangement but a smaller internal diameter. The Spline boss was then replaced. Now the spare is ready to swap to SC or Front.
Removal of the spline boss in the field is pretty much a non event. Because not only is it a slight interference fit on the mating spigot, but it seemed mine was attached while the paint was wet and way too much URAL super thread lock was binding it all together. The application of heat from my propane torch was required to free it up for removal. I cleaned up all surfaces and linished the spigot until the boss could be refitted and removed more easily.
NOT something to try out in the wilderness.
This is not an instruction. It is just my way of overcoming this issue.
