My kind of expert. I love the 'scientific' aspect. You have just solved my tomato plant problem e.g. strong winds at a time of the year which is unexpected in late spring. Thought my tomatoes had a fungus that would affect them all. Not so. I understand exactly and am eliminating the problem. All plants on the way to flowering so it was a puzzle. I am a much better tomato gardening than before. Straight forward speaking, no waffle, no wasted time tell us how brilliant you are. Success speaks volumes. Thanks.

One of my grandmother’s was raised on a farm in Newfoundland. She swore by manure. Fresh is the best, but commercial cow manure is a best second. I place 3-4 hand fulls of manure at the bottom of the hole, and cover with 3“ of soil , and then place the plant on top. The plant will draw from that reservoir of manure all season long without re-fertilizing. Rotating plants each year is a good idea.

Hi and thanks for the video. I live in Ho Chi Minh (Saigon) and am growing cherry tomatoes in containers on my balcony. Some of them are in 5L bottles, upside down, and some are in pots on the railing. We get great morning sun to about 11 am on the balcony, so about 5-6 hrs strong sun. It is rainy season here now, so sometimes the plants get just cloudy daylight instead of strong sunlight. Initially, my upside downs had a problem with blossom drop, but I started giving them a 10-30-20 weak fertilizer - they are not dropping blossoms anymore, but still waiting to see fruit setting. I had the first problem you mentioned with the leaves curling, but I think it is just as you said - plant protection from strong sunlight. All of them, upside downs and railing pots, have lots of growth. I just hope, besides the foilage, we also get fruit, so I want to continue w the 10-30-20, and give them seaweed fertilizer because a) it is more organic, and b) contains so many trace minerals. Anyway, wish me luck, and thanks again for you vids! 😉

@@strakill after taking another look at the video, I see the problem, his raised beds are to shallow, his plants will get root bound real quick, forgive the miss spelling, I had the same problem, I learned the hard way, it takes a huge pot or raised bed for a tomato plant, at the very minimum 24 inch by 24 inch by 16 inch deep, and that is on the verge of being to small, when I lived out in the country I had no problems, when I moved to the city in 2007 the dirt around this house was worst you can imagine, I tried every thing, raised beds, and just like the ones in the video to shallow, a 5 gallon bucket is way to small, I use to think keep the water and plant food to it, it will grow, well not so, if it can not grow underneath it want grow on top the dirt, when your plant is done at the end of the year take a look at the root ball on it, if the pot or the bed, what ever you are growing it in is compacted full of roots, the plant can not grow like that, O it will live all summer and look like it is dying all summer, I went to my county agi ext agent, and told him of my problems, he said a healthy plant can fight off most plant disease, any way I have taken up enough of your time, I hope you can get your garden going, the soil, the volume of your soil, and plant food, and water, is key, do this, try one pot to small and another what you think to be to large, and next year all your pots will be of the what you think to large, personally next year I will have more of the seems to large type, good luck

I've never done a fall garden and live in Armada because we have clay soil in my backyard, Unfortunately could not get my garden beds built in time for planting. I don't have to explain the problem spring we've had to deal with, Since we live close to your area here in MI. I have many health issues that have kept me unable to garden for the last 30 yrs. Now with raised beds becoming more recently brought to my attention, I appreciate the chance to see if I'm able to grow my favorite vegetables and fruits again in Hope's it will be possible for me to physically do. I would appreciate your advice on when to start my zucchini, cucumbers and beans. I've calculated that now is time to sow them. Thank you for for any assistance you have in advice for me. Hey MIGardner! Really love your videos, as a budding but novice gardner, I've seen most of them at this point. This is my first foray into trying to single stem them (they're all indeterminate)I've got about 8 really good looking tomato plants going right but one is giving me fits. It's got a serious case of leaf curl with what looks Ike burnt edges(but no yellowing). It's mainly on the lower branches but not exclusively. I tried soaking it down real thoroughly but that didn't help so I'm guessing it either can't take the water into its system or it's some virus. I live in Seattle and we haven't broken 75 degrees yet so it isn't the heat or sun. Any thoughts? I've got some pics but don't know how to share them here.
Anyway, I'm sure you're insanely busy right now, best of luck this year and keep the videos coming. Don't hold it against me but I was raised just south of Michigan so... Go Buckeyes!!

On a gardening scale, I'm in the amateur section. And it stuns me how: every season I learn something new to step up my gardening game!
    Thanks!
Can't wait to go home to daignoze my plants 😊.

Thanks for this video I had some issues with a few of the plants I've grown tomato wise. I was wondering if CUrly top affects the soil?

Sure - topical viruses can be transmitted to your next batch of plants from the soil. All it takes is rain water (or your water) splashing it up onto the leaves, or bugs/ants landing on infected soil then on your plants. Don't compost infected plants/leaves and get the infected plants out of the bed at the end of the season. Ditto with any early blight plants - I'd burn them .

Thank you for such an educational video! I've had upward leaf curl suddenly on two tomato plants started indoor under a grow light - I moved them from the light, thinking perhaps this was the problem, as it was only the two and it was so sudden. Your video has assured me this is more then likely the problem. Very informative and well done - subscribing to your channel

One you forgot that can be important is herbicide. This can happen from using grass clippings for mulch that had 2-4D sprayed on it, which is in some weed killers. Watering well after this mishap can help, but you could be in trouble.
Also, the white butterfly in your background was the cabbage moth. Spraying Bt, an organic pesticide, is the remedy. There were actually two mating! You can also pick off the cabbage moth in its caterpillar form as well as use netting (though you have to do that very early 8n the season)

Had curly top on one of my cherry tomatoes early this season. Had to yank it up and put something else in its place.

Amazing video. Thank you. I live in a place that gets constant deluges well into August, when it suddenly gets hot and dry for a few months. I will be on the look out for downward leaf curl this year.

Over here in wisconsin, my heirlooms are quite low to the ground and the hybrids that I planted seem to be doing much better. I had a rough start either way, black birds too my newly planted heirlooms and ripped the tops right off. Then the plant sent out side shoots and every one of them trying to turn into a tomato bush. Lots of wasted plant energy, made a late start even later.
