- Texas Panhandle wildfires on Monday have led to a disaster declaration by Governor Greg Abbott for numerous counties, including evacuation orders.
After two days, the wildfires rapidly spread over hundreds of thousands of acres and consumed everything in its path.
The Smokehouse Creek Fire on Wednesday is the second largest in the state’s history, as up to 60 counties face fire danger.
The flames, stemming from Smokehouse Creek, Texas, moved at an alarming speed and consumed a vast stretch of land, turning it all to ash.
Texas A&M Forrest Service released a statement saying the Smokehouse Creek Fire started in Hutchinson County and spread over 500,000 acres.
Governor Abbot said the high temperatures and dry, windy conditions have all contributed to the spread of the flames and could last a few more days.
“These conditions could increase the potential for these wildfires to grow larger and more dangerous. Texans are urged to limit activities that could create sparks and take precautions to keep their loved ones safe,” he said.

Living in the Texas Panhandle, I think I can say it's probably just our annual rotten luck. It's way too far north to be connected to the border...and the counties burning now have a bad habit of catching on fire around this time of year every few years or so. Just a bad combination of tall dry grass and seasonal high winds. 2006, like they said, we had a horrible fire. And we had two more really big ones in 2011 and 2017--and I think a few smaller ones in the years between that.
This one is just getting coverage--and that *is* unusual.

One has to wonder (with all the devious and dastardly things going on) if this is natural or deliberate.
This all seems to have come out of nowhere with no prior warnings. Something doesn't seem right since the texas panhandle is usually very cold. it was snowing alot up there not that long ago, a month or two ago..
Winter is always the worst fire season up there. Dead, dry grass and vegetation. Add in very low humidity and high winds. And this month has had record HIGH temperatures. It was in the 70 degF temps the last week up there. Last snow was before Valentines Day, and it wasn't that much. And gone in 2 days.

I live in this part of Texas and was actually only a few miles from this fire in its early stages yesterday. Smoke was so bad we couldnt see anything. When i made it home the whole town was smoke and ashes fell outta the sky for hours. Ill say 1 thing tho, all we need now is rain and the area will be super green.

When rock layers break apart they release methane gas from trapped vegetation and generate electrical discharge and electromagnetic pulses. The resulting gap is then filled with molten rock which superheats and ignites anything on the surface.

A bad one for sure and I worry for the ranchers but I highly doubt it is any other then some careless jerk causing a flame and then WHOOSH. It doesn't take much when the conditions are right. I was living in Colorado when several cities in Dec 2022 were completely destroyed by fire 🔥 and some people lost everything and are still not able to rebuild their homes and businesses. Over 3000 homes and businesses gone for ever. Same thing it was the perfect storm- high winds and lots of extreme dry grass. They’ve still not been able to determine what or who started the original fire 🔥

It was horrible . I thank GOD for sparing Borger. The fires were all around. All roads in and out of Borger were closed at a certain point and we couldnt leave. As of 11am on Feb 29, 2024 here in Texas, the Smokehouse Creek fire alone is 1,075,000 acres and only 3% contained which I believe makes it the largest wildfire in Texas history. This fire is larger than the entire state of Rhode Island and multiple other fires are also burning in this same area of the Texas panhandle.

In case youre wondering March is when the winds pick up in West Texas. Its been that way for centuries. With that said this totally seems weird how it all went down.
Grass fires are common in this area. Unfortunately it has been a dry and warm winter, plus the wind the past couple days has been high.
Today the wind calmed down quite a bit and the temperature this morning was about 20F.
Most of the area affected is open grassland, but a lot of people live out in the countryside, pray for them and their livestock.
And there is a little help from a devious friend!? 😈
I hope that the livestock will be ok. Yet actually grass fires are good for grassland and the plains. "God bless Texas"

The ones in Canada were irrefutably orchestrated; and considering Texas' strained relationship with certain powers I'm thinking this could be more of the same.
This is ONLY the 2nd largest wildfire in RECORDED history. If you dig into the deep soil, the evidence for prairie fires were far more frequent in the past and often started on purpose by the Plains tribes to prevent larger fires. The zero fire policies of modern times lead to these gaint fires due to the build up of dormant grass during periods of drought. When the rain returns, the grass and fire adapted trees like scrub oak will grow back.
Unbelievable the governor hasn't brought in air tankers with retardant drops like in California. All this loss and no air drops.
Certain conditions have to be met before they can fly, with the winds dying down after the cold front moved through they should be able to get air equipment to help now.

I live there, about six towns were forced to evacuate, there are four fires with one burning 250,000 acres alone. It happens about every ten to15 years.

How terrifying for the people who live there. In Idaho we have wildfire season as well and it's awful to watch it happening. There is and will be plenty of damage so I can only cross my fingers it's as minimal as possible. Thanks to the people who fight these fires and put their own lives at risk.

Uh, its not raging through the State. It's about half of the Panhandle of Texas and a huge section now in Oklahoma. About a million achers burnt so far. There are a lot of structures destroyed ,but this is mostly farmland, cattle grazing and stock yards located putside of the city of Amarillo.
I am curious to hear how many cattle a trapped in these fires. To Americans, this could spike and alreadt soring price for beef.
I born & raised in the panhandle. Biggest problem is that they don’t have a lot of roads in and out of these areas. I pray 🙏 for them to survive this. I don’t trust that this is not on purpose. There’s a lot of feed lots where cattle are being held for slaughter. Think about this as the large dairy farm that just exploded last year and many other disasters that have occurred around the country that have resulted in loss of livestock. They are trying to destroy our food supply especially bovine and pig farms. Yes to me this is just like a lot of fires like Maui, Pariadise California, this are no accident. Plus think about what is happening in Texas with the government. I shudder to think what would happen if the plant manufacturers of nukler weapons should catch fire 🔥 I have friends and family members still in Texas 🙏🙏🙏🙈😳

I have family that live in Elk City, Oklahoma, where the video was shot from inside the fire department truck. I pray there is no more loss of life. Yesterday, the news said the largest of the fires had burned over 900,000 acres and was only 30% contained. I havent seen any news yet this morning.
