I really appreciate that you also show the failed repair attempts. Even if you can't fix something, people can learn from the troubleshooting process itself. It also makes the videos more 'real'. When I first started repairing things I was surprised by how complex issues you could encounter. It is rarely that simple to fix things as in some of the UA-cam videos.
This is very true, I would get some stuff and be super puzzled when I couldn’t find any videos or documentation to help me out. Most of the repair stuff on UA-cam tends to get very repetitive and sometimes not informative.
UA-cam decided to put this in my recommended videos this morning, glad I found your channel my man. Really like your style, your commentary, editing, the quiet music playing. Plus you're soldering and repair capabilities give me some motivation to learn and improve my skillsets. Thanks!
Thanks for another great repair video. I repair old cartridges too, but I learn something new every time I watch you. To clean labels, I put a very small amount of warm water on a soft paper towel and lightly rub the label. Sometimes I dry them with a clean paper towel and repeat the process once or twice more, always using very little water and being very gentle, using almost no pressure. This method can remove a surprising amount of dirt, and works well even on stuff like 40-year-old Atari 2600 cart labels which are easily damaged. I never touch labels with IPA. I learned the hard way that it'll quickly dissolve the ink on some labels.
Dr Loco thanks I’m glad you enjoyed the video. I will keep your idea in mind for next time. In this case I used ipa but a very small amount and I think the cart came out great.
@@PunkNDisorderlyGamer IPA can bleed the ink of the labels. I found that a 5% Simple Green - water solution is best. Just make sure to go behind with a wet clean cloth to get the soap residue off.
8:35 You forgot to take it out for an expensive dinner and whipser sweet nothings in the cart slot. This might sound really stupid but I had a TMNT IV cart many years back that wouldn't work properly unless is was heated before use. For kicks, you may want to try that to see if the battle would play out.
@@PunkNDisorderlyGamer it was sunny here. Man that 2nd cart look Beat talk about raising the Dead lol. Hey even though the battery tested good on that first cart did you think about swapping it out. I seen on another video where someone had the same problem and they swapped the Battery. Dont want to waste you timee just a thought.
What you can do is bake the PRG chip. This can fix it in some cases, but in other cases can make it worse. This method isn't healthy for semiconductors. But hey, what do you have to lose?! ;)
nhsadm that’s what I would like to do except the dragon warrior 4 only has 2 board swap candidates. Dragon warrior 3 and dragon warrior 4. Both of those games are expensive.
SNES game labels got crappy in 1995 after final assembly/packaging for North America was moved to Mexico (thanks, NAFTA). Because they have an edge that wraps around the top they take more abuse than N64 labels too. The edge is typically worn through and white for late games like Killer Instinct or late reprints of earlier games.
Are the legs on these ROMs long enough to work with a socket? Would they still fit in the shells with the extra height from a socket? I've not worked on SNES carts, but it seems like adding sockets in your own copies of carts would make it easier for you to test the chips from eBay buys, and save solder wear/tear on your own copy. I would go adding sockets everywhere, but anytime you were testing a ROM swap it might make sense to add one.
Zolotarev Aleksandr this flux was the brand that came with the pen. But I tend to use MG Chemicals Rosin Flux. Once the pen runs dry I will refill with Mg chemicals Rosin flux. Keep in mind they also have liquid no clean flux which is a bit different.
Oh that’s Brasso, it’s a metal polish mild abrasive, it works wonders just make sure to finish it off with alcohol because it will leave a white residue once it drys.
Is there a site that lets you know which games are compatible? I have a few donkey Kong's country's and super Mario worlds and was looking for cheap games to swap boards on.
For Dragon warrior maybe remove the battery for awhile and start a new game and try it. maybe try a newer battery too if the voltages is lower. probably a low %5 chance of this working but it may work. Hopefully the point where it freezes isn't too far into the game for this test.
Came here to comment the same. It's also possible the save game is corrupt, or was made with a game genie or something else (leading it to be corrupt). Please wipe the saves (and maybe a new battery as well, as Matt B mentioned) and give it another try. If that doesn't work, a dump of the rom and comparison with a working rom might show a difference....

Your music selection is the best

Great video! Love both dw4 and spike mcfang. SM is super underrated.
LMAO I can imagine just seeing someone running last minute screaming for a copy of quarterback club.
Lmfao 🤣
Great vid! What a nasty cart that was. A complete horror show. Really impressed by how you saved it.
nice great job , thank you 🙏 for changing the background music 🎵 it’s so beautiful 😍
Thanks again I now have a play list of more calm music. I’m glad you enjoyed it.

Wil's VG Addiction now I’m intrigued I could heat the board in the toaster oven and try it out.
Thanks as always for the video where I can buy such chips
keep up the great work man.. love your videos
Woke up to a New Video todays definitely going to be a good day.
It’s pretty rainy on our side my brother.

Aw man...I have missed a few of your videos.
my fav video on your channel ma gai lol
Sad about that DW4. Never even saw 2, 3 or 4 back in the actual days of NES. Too rare.
Steveburto me neither, so many games on nes I’ve never seen until many years later, no one I knew had em.
Dump the cartridge and try to compare the rom to a working rom through a hex editor. Its possible that some ESD damaged a byte value in the PRG.

Congrats! Great video, tks for sharing
Nice work saving Spike McFang. Never heard of it. I guess for the DW4 you can't do the same and swap the chips to a donor PCB.

Yeah I noticed that. A lot of N64 games go white very often.

For nes they are too tall to close the shell for snes I’m not sure
what flux do you use in pencil? kester?

What is the cleaning solution (the white paste) you use to remove corrosion?

Great vid! Do you have a link to the site can’t seam to find it thanks in advance ❤️
