Pound for pound you are fast becoming my favorite music news source on UA-cam...your low key, concise and thoughtful approach to all things music is greatly appreciated. Keep it up man!
Thank you - Phil :)
Fabulous!! Great reviews!! I’ve not heard any new Hawkwind albums for years, I think I’ll have to grab some of those newer albums, starting with the Albert Hall box. Cheers Phil, keep up with the reviews, loving it!!
Really a coincidence yesterday when I saw this review of the Yes CTTE set. I had just listened to a really excellent quality of an OG Close To The Edge George Piros AT/GP 1972 pressing that I just received in the mail! That pressing is really fantastic. I'm curious, if I understand this right, that the box set has a remaster of the the original album on vinyl and a Steven Wilson remix also? Did Wilson do the remaster of the original album in this set also? Huge fan of Mountain and West, Bruce & Laing. I saw Mountain and Leslie West solo bands 25 times from the early '70's to 2008. The W,B&L album "Why Dontcha" is one of my favorite albums of all time and really should be remastered on vinyl, which hasn't happened yet.
Phil is a treasure just love his speaking style!
Big Man fan here; I saw that Hawkwind/Man badge in that set; I have that badge, I was at that show in Berkeley, CA in 1973, with Andy 'Android' Dunkley as the DJ. They piped in Tim Leary from prison over the PA. I've seen Man lots of times in the SF Bay Area between 1974 and 1976, including some where John Cippolina joined in. I have some great photos of 'em, too. Yes, Ken, Micky, and Deke are all sadly departed.
Be good to yourself at least once a day
Great video and like you I didn't discover Steely Dan until a few years ago, no way I would have listened to them 30 years ago, Like you said great musicians fantastic songs thanks again.
Great overview mate mate; the golden era of prog and classic rock. I remember listening to roll over Beethoven from Mountain; first what seemed like minutes of some sort of feedback through the amp as the intro. not sure what gig it was but OMG!
Nice to see Man getting some attention. Their album Maximum Darkness is, for me, the greatest live album ever recorded.
I was at some of the shows that was recorded at in San Francisco.
I like the review show. Helpful when you break up content in multiple videos. Keep up the great work and rock on!
I also wanted to add that I really like this new format; it's super informative about albums I'd consider buying; in fact, I ordered the 'Close to the Edge' one while watching this.... Now for that Man box....
A very fair review of close to the edge Phil, appreciated
Thanks for the Yes unboxing. I ordered the limited edition that has a Roger Dean signed lithograph. Coming out in the US March 7. Looking forward to getting it.
Good evening. Very interesting as usual. Thank you for this piece of information and, especially, for your manner of speaking, for your nice, clear, genuine English!!! Neither American English, widely spread around, nor Indian/Pakistani/Bangladesh English, but English English. It's a great pleasure to listen to you!!!
And what about compact-cassettes? I know a lot of music-fans, who return now back to classic vintage cassette-decks and compact-cassettes...
In any case, it was a pleasure to listen to your programme!! Thanks.
Thanks Phil for another great video. My focus is on the Close To The Edge super deluxe box set and I agree with you that a hard back book and better storage for the original album cd and blu ray would have been a much better design. My Camel Air Born box set has a terrific book with it but the cd’s are just slotted into slits inside with no covers albeit a solid outer box so I suppose it’s a toss up with these sets between space and cost. Having said that, Close To The Edge is, in my opinion, the pinnacle of prog rock albums by YES and indeed by all other prog bands so a super dooper mega box set was surely called for! Suffice to say I’ve pre ordered it and I don’t even have surround sound capabilities but…I HAD to buy it!
I like your reviews of all of these classic albums and the artists that recorded them and listening to what you like or don't like about them
thanks again Phil.🎶📻🎶
Great set of reviews Phil. It's a shame these labels only target fans with deep pockets, leaving those with of more modest means shut out. Surely they could provide a stripped down version of sets like Close To The Edge for them.
You're thinking of Remember The Future. Wasn't the previous reissue of CTTE on a label that started with a P? I believe that they also did the King Crimson remixes. How is the remastering of that DLR set? I'm not big into solo albums from singers from big bands, but I do dig box sets. I think of Dave like i think of Ozzy or Dio. They worked with some fine guitarists.
Thanks Phil. Looking forward to it.👍🏻
Thanks for the DLR-unboxing, been waiting for that!
You're right about Close To The Edge Phil. What annoys me is that two or three years ago Roger Dean did live painting sessions of a specific piece of art for a forthcoming CTTE box set!, it was one of a possible 10 new pieces of art he said. So, Rhino, what happened to Roger's hard work?
Hi Phil, love Close to the edge, although the packaging of this release does look a bit disappointing for the money. I visited a local gallery in about 2001 not knowing that Roger Dean was exhibiting. His original yes artworks were on show, some with 6 figure pricetags. I wished i had brought my yes albums as he was doing a signing. Dont think Hawkind would have got near to playing the Albert Hall in the 70's but happily that venue is a bit more amenable to all types of music these days.
Hey, Phil. Great video as always. But you forgot to put a hyphen between "Ko" and "fi" on your URL in the description. I noticed it here, and it is also in all your recent videos which I could see now.
I know it is important because I have one also which is brunosamppa. Cheers! All the best.
Phil, thanks - love the format of this new show. I have been playing the Hawkind RAH album since 25DEC which is great as you say but it will have to take a back seat for now as yesterday, Riverside live, Magnum live and Nectar's Journey ... arrived and I have been gorging on these, particularly Riverside. I know you will love it when you get your copy, if not already done so. Kind regards
Hi Phil - about the Steely Dan cover, that is an insect in the locust family called a 'katydid'. More dry humour from the lads that I think a lot of people didn't get.
There you go! Everyday is a school day, thank you, I did not know that. It makes perfect sense now - Phil :)
Just a thought, many comments are from music lovers (including myself) who are probably baby boomers. Do you think younger people are into prog snd classic rock as much as we are. And thanks Phil for continuing to spread the word about the fantastic bands and guitarists from the 70's
I bought David Lee Roth's Skyscraper when it was released in 1989 or something. I loved it then, love it now. Only last week I listened to it and it's still great. Definitely more mainstream than Eat 'm and Smile on which I find only Yankee Rose and Shy Boy indispensable. Well, just my opinion.
Phil, Good reviews thanks ! I am a big Mountain fan and don't own this U.K. box (yet), because I was concerned about the repetition of sets at various venue's. However, you did mention West's style is to extend his playing as he goes, like Hendrix did doing concerts. Thank you for the video !
I'm crying over the horrible so called deluxe treatment that Close To The Edge was given. One of the best and most important rock albums in history and we get THIS?! Absolutely disgusting... NO BUY.
edit: as always, and my disappointment aside, a great video, Phil! 🙂
I see the Yes album is now available at half the original price from Amazon.
Great review show Phil. Another close to the edge remaster 🙄 Looks really poor packaging. Scraping the barrel a tad? Definitive? At least for the next couple of years. I have all their studio LPs but I still can’t make my mind up about steely Dan 😂
Nektar are a decent band. Got a few things by them I really enjoy. Keep these reviews coming Phil. Cheers, Chris
I have the boxset of Nektar on pre order.Has the blu-ray 5.1
It’s great to hear that the Eat 'Em and Smile disc sounds better than the previous version. I love all of DLR’s solo albums. Did you also get the limited edition LP box set? Can’t wait for mine to arrive!
Thank you for this review, Phil!
the LP set is not available over here. :(
How does the new remaster of CTHE compare to the previous two, Phil? And does it say who did the remaster? I'm hoping (if it really is new and is good) that it will get a separate release on its own. The Nectar looks good! Good old Cherry Red, eh.
I actually like the simplified YES super deluxe releases, looks great on my bookshelf & I have no need for a lot of extras, including a book. The music I have been very happy with.
Another interesting overview, Phil: thank you. Just one thing - you showed a Sharks box at the start of the video. Do you plan to review this soon? I ask because I've nothing by that band on CD and am interested in the set. Cheers.
Yep - I slipped up there! I have filmed it but accidentally forgot to add it to the video. It will be in the next 'Review Show Video'. Phil
Thanks Phil,
You mentioned the new SHARKS Box set at the beginning of the video but I did not see you speak about it?
Did I miss something.
Nope! It was me, I made a mistake in the edit. It will be in the next episode! Thank you - Phil :)
@NowSpinningMagazine did you notice in the booklet, not one photograph of Andy Fraser in the booklet. Very disappointing to be honest.
My complaint (or criticism, you pick which works for you) other than yours re. packaging, is the exclusion of the Spanish language version of "Eat'em and Smile" the impossible to find and very expensive album/vinyl (it wasn't released on CD) "Sonrisa Salvaje". The inclusion of that title would have made this "box set" absolutely essential. What a missed opportunity!
@@MichaelRMarshall1 it was released on CD . I have it .
Hi Phil - I thought the Yes box set was really poor to be honest. If Mott The Hoople can put out that lovely set, and they werent in the same class as Yes - surely Yes could do so much better. The music is classic, but that packaging is so poor. Cya Doug
Hi Phil, showing the Stormwatch boxed set reminded me - have you reviewed Bursting Out Inflated Edition yet?
Thank you for reminding me! It is on my list for this month :)
Could not agree more on CTTE .
If I start to compare this to f.i. the release of Abbey Road , Let it be , The white album , then it becomes pale .
Now I guess that The Beatles at that time had constantly photographers etc around them , so obvious there is more material , but still this CTTE is in terms of packaging and information disapointing and indeed the packaging of the discs on the left side is flimsy and will be damaged over time if not quickly.
can't locate the Man boxset so would appreciate any ideas where i can purchase this. Thanks.
Hi Phil that would apply to me also, can't seem to locate a seller. Thanks

@NowSpinningMagazine Thank you!
Great!
Nice video
Tempted to go for the CTTE set but the only thing I hav'nt already got is the latest remaster - which probably doesn't sound that different from the last one and I'm not a huge fan of the SW remixes which sound dull and flat.
Excellent, snappy video ... the Yes set looks underwhelming and pricey - disappointing given the quality / legacy of the music ... I will need to check out the Hawkwind set [never "got" them ... but did see them live in early 1980's] ... the Dave Lee Roth box is interesting ... actually played Skyscraper the other night and thought "man this album desperately needs a re-mix or something" so I will check to see if music is available to stream on Qobuz .... as stated at start, great briskly paced video, not too long ... gets everything across nice and efficiently [bit like Tom Petty ... "don't bore us, get to the chorus"] ... Cheers CMcG Aberdeen Scotland
£100 for the Yes / whatever ...jog on. Buy a decent used copy for a tenner, my advice
Haukwinnde
Hello good sir, there is an album I would like to recommend called "the ritual" by Steve Denny project, all I ask is that you give it a listen
Who else is in the band apart from Leslie and Corky please ?
Richie Scarlet on bass.
Compré el Close To The Edge. 110 Dólares y no es nada buena la presentacion, es muy pobre y costosa, según veo ahora. Espero el material sonoro compense tan deficiente edición
