Im hatching my own backyard chicks and wanted to learn about Genetics in chickens. I searched for a video and your came up and you do a wonderful job explaining about it! I'll probably have to get a pen and paper and watch your videos over and over again to really remember.. Thank you! 💯

Great videos but it's too confusing with all the technical mumbojumbo I get lost in all of it but thanks for trying to help everyone out

It is confusing, there is a lot to it. It took me a long time to understand. 😅 Just keep at it and find what helps you! Punnet Squares helped me the most, but it doesn’t help everybody. 🙂

Hello, I am breeding lemon blues and silver blues and around the 6 minute mark the genetics example is a split male over a silver hen. I was curious if the split male was over a gold hen what the offspring would be

Hi, great question! It’s actually a really cool pairing. 😁 When a S/s+ male is bred to a s+/- hen, you can get S/- (Silver) hens, s+/- (Gold) hens, S/s+ (silver split to gold) males and s+/s+ (gold) males. Technically this still is a sex linked pairing to a degree. All silvers are female, splits are males and golds could be either way. 🙂

If I am seeing/hearing this correctly.... you just described my situation!! I have been trying to figure this out with my Brahma's & have yet to find anything that relates to my situation. The rooster is silver/gold(he is white with black on the neck(some yellowing on the neck! I assume from the gold & tail is black((with some yellowing in the saddle feathers) & the females are buff(gold) all buff color with the black neck & tail. (The females did come from silver/gold roo & gold hen(but only hens getting 1 they obviously only carry the gold gene to pass on, is what I am gathering from the info).
So far my offspring from the above have been 50/50 male/female if gold & if they come out silver they have been all male.
Your explanation makes it all make sense now! So any silver chicks WILL be male & the gold(buff) will be 50/50, male/female!
I appreciate your video & how you explain it all in an easy way to understand it yet still staying scientific with the terms.

No problem at all! Glad it could help! Only thing is, with the male, keep in mind that sometimes yellowing is just khaki leakage, so the pairing *might* just be a silver male over gold females. Definitely keep track of the results though! 😁 So glad it was helpful!

Genetics is my next step in raising Chickens. I just look at them and guess who the parents are. I have different color Silkies, variety of chicken types, and know they creating their own combinations. My favorite is my black Silkie rooster and a white Leghorn both I have four chicks. We call them "Dominoes with fabulous hair"! I am also researching their personality s. They are wonderful birds!

I have buff roo x blue marans hen cross chicks.
I have been wondering how they will look when they mature.
Not sure if silver is the same as blue and gold is the same as buff but if they are then I guess my roo will be gold and blue and the hen will be buff.

Hey! So silver and blue are different genes. Silver and gold are different alleles that occupy the same locus. Blue is unrelated to both. 🙂 I would expect the offspring to come out blue or black with tons of leakage. This cross doesn't create a new variety, think of it as a 'mutt color'. 🙂

@Cedar Shade Farm Thank you for replying! I have been watching tons of videos and scouring forums for about 2 dozen hours over the last week and there is a ton of info on black, blue, red, splash genetics but I haven't been able to find any info on buff crossed with any other colors!
      Thank you again!💜

@@SubliminalD-pm1wy No problem at all! Buff is complicated because it is actually a variety caused by a combination of genes, not just a plain color. Buff is usually done on a wheaten base, but can be made on partridge as well. :) It also has Columbia and Db, but can also have Mh and/or Di. There are different types of buffs too. For example, buff Columbian is buff without Db, which is why buff columbian birds have black tails and hackles. :)

@Cedar Shade Farm My sole young rooster is a BCM and I am breeding him with my RIR and PBR hens currently. I have about 10 other breeds that are a couple of weeks to a couple of months old but I plan to cross them with my BCM when they mature.
I have dreamed of having a chicken and duck farm for about 20 years and have just made it a reality in the last 6 months.
I am so in love with my poultry and all of the experiments I can do with breeding and I am extremely appreciative of all of the knowledgeable people like you that are willing to help new people like me!😎💚

Might be a silly question but would a black copper maran rooster and a cuckoo maran hen make all cuckoo roosters and black hens? Sex link dark egg layers would be awesome 👍🙏✌️

    • @CedarShadeFarm
      @CedarShadeFarm  6 місяців тому +1

Correct! The male offspring would be double barred (heterozygous barred), and the female offspring would be black. 🙂 Both would most likely have gold leakage though.
