@@ashspike5232 I also love isn't anything but tbh some of the pre isn't anything material does have a different charecter to it than the stuff off the album. Isnt Anything feels like a halfway point between this and their later work. Not a criticism at all of Isnt Anything, You Never Should is one of my favorite tracks from any band for instance, but Never Say Goodbye and some of the releases immediately recorded after Selways departure from the band sound like some other weird twee shoegaze band. Like some c86 style band playing through a hurricane. Recently Kevin has expressed interest in remastering their music from this period, and it has me beyond excited
This really puts to bed the idea that they discovered loudness and discordance when they signed to Creation - it was there at the beginning of the classic line-up in 87 - this and "Please Lose Yourself in Me" - which is also amazing. Neither song would look out of place on Isn't Anything.
Hell yes. When I first became a fan the consensus was Loveless not only outshines Isn't Anything but is also completely distinct and unrelated. But you can hear those oscillating guitar moans hanging around half notes and introducing new melodical and metric structures in Isn't Anything. The way the drowned out the drums in Loveless was the way they drowned out the guitars in Isn't Anything. It created something beautiful, but if you took the element you drowned out and used it to drown out others, you created something just a beautiful but just differently balanced.
@@Fig8907 Fair point, I'm not too familiar with their output pre-Strawberry Wine/Ecstasy - and now it's all on UA-cam I've really no excuse - I just assumed they'd not be as good with the other lead singer who left.

They were always loud, but they really found a way to utilize that racket in 1987.
