A suggestion: In your future videos, is it possible to use balls that make it easy to see the spin on the ball, something like Joola spin balls? It would then be super obvious to see the effects of the serve you are showing. BTW I say topspin at the end.
The timing of this comment! I found one but I'm also about to order some. So, they might not feature in the new couple of videos but they're on the way.
Hi Craig, I was thinking the same thing. And... why not invite the slow mo guys to have a very good accuracy of the spins, movements, ball's rpm, high an lenght of the rebounds.... It should be nice with their phantom 😊😊 Friendly,
Ovtcharovs Backhand Serve got us out of boredom of just Pendulum serves everywhere. He actually was awarded with “the best inventions 2008 award” by the times magazine. Just love the variety 😇
Great video Craig. I enjoyed the captions on the RHS giving a breakdown of the constituent parts of the backhand serve. I realise now how versatile the BHS really is !!!
Backspin 100% What helps is looking at the racket angle on contact. I played against someone recently who was really good at backhand serve and, like Craig, the arm/elbow motion is the same on all variations so that threw me off a bit the first times I faced it. Good thing for the receiver is that the racket is not concealed for very long so you have a opportunity to focus on the contact point. As for placement I always found this extremely hard to predict. Like Craig said, when the server maintains the same posture throughout their serves it really doesn't give away much and I feel like the backhand serve gives you such a nice angle for placing the ball anywhere you want. Definitely something I'll practice more! Thanks for yet another great video, Craig!
great video! Thanks for your work. For me the most important part of playing backhand serve is indeed the grip. I am not the fastest to go back to shake hand after, for instance, reverse pendulum. Really liked the part on the different starting positions. I have come to like the far out position quite a bit recently, especially long with lots of side spin to the backhand side- ball moves off and then onto the table.
I think it's backspin! I like to use the backhand serve from the left of the table. Will try your method of serving from the right side of the table. Never done that before 😅 . Thanks for the awesome tips!
Hi Craig, Many thanks for sharing the backhand serve very detailed instructions! I am a beginner (or intermediate??), playing mostly doubles. Your useful tips will really help me to improve my serve, which is very poor now. I have to practice because "practice makes perfect". Please send some tips for playing doubles. Greetings from the Czech Republic!
...even Samsonov close to the end of his career, almost exclusively, used backhand serve in his matches, and that guy knows a thing or two about Table Tennis :-) It appears that with the backhand serve you could potentially serve right and left (watch Kong Linghui's hybrid own-developed serve and the backhand serve)..... Thanks for the vid! Big fan, as usual 🙂
Great video, top spin is what I see….I watch a guy’s channel called Loosee Looee who does a backhand serve with backspin that makes the ball come back to the net, I can make the ball stop but not come running back to the net, any idea what the trick is?
Hi Craig. I've been waiting for this video for a long time. I ask you a question, in this service is the wrist important or is the arm used more to generate the spin? It is difficult for me to generate a strong spin on the backhand serve.
If the grip is not tight (just light enough) then you'll benefit from some wrist action in the serve, which will allow for more spin. So, yes, it can be important.
Love the videos. How about backhand no spin variation? Maybe you could mention how to build a simple rebound board using old table tennis rubbers so people can confirm the spin they "think" they have applied to the serve. Cheers from Canada
No spin is always a useful variation. I’m definitely not skilled enough to talk about ‘how to build a return board.’ One of my clients has just sent me theirs though, so I’m sure that’ll feature soon.
Lucky! I'm a beginner, if somebody serves a backhand serve like this, should I aim the bat to the left or right if I want to return the ball to the middle of the table?
@@rfbooth this works in (mostly?) all classes. but sometimes i do exactly the other way, because he dont think, that this can happen. the surprise is on your side, even in a bit higher amateur leagues. (in pro league i dont know, i dont play there ^^)
After watching back, I agree, the quality is off but I’ve used the same set up as before and the quality in the others has been okay. I had a different light (heater glowing red - it’s a cold hall!) on and perhaps that’s what’s distorted the picture.

Thanks you, good lesson
Could we have a video or two on serves for when playing doubles as you don't have the whole table to play with? Thanks for all your great videos.
I'll add it to the list :)
Very helpful. Thanks. Top spin.
I have been winning more with these basic serves it also simplifies the balls that return from your serves.
Awesome instruction. Many thanks for the content.

I am practising for some months but much closer to the net. I think yours is really good to add another variaty.
That helps soo much, more of that, thank you!
Great Video. So useful to have a safe service but which isn't obvious to the opponent. Thank you

Very good
Could you please let us know what blade and what rubbers you use? Thank you

I watched the last serve several times, and I think it's a topspin. But if I saw it the first time in a match, I wouldn't be sure.
Oooooh, how sure are you?! :)
my guess: backspin serve@@TheTableTennisServiceGuy
Looks top
Sure?!?
would a lot of these principles still apply to left handed players, if so how would it differ?
Serving to a left hander, yes
Lucky ... but the vast majority of the time you don't have to rely on luck (you make everything look so easy and I really love your videos). Thanks
I’d go for Topspin
How sure are you?
Yes, Lucky 😇
Back spin 😊
For me is a topspin service, following the trajectory of the ball. True?
Double check…are you sure?

What blade/rubbers are you using? I had to switch to Rakza Z to improve my serves, but I'm not sure I like it on my 2nd/3rd balls.
I use Dynaryz AGR. Yeah, important to find a river that you’re comfortable with for all aspects of the game 👍
@@TheTableTennisServiceGuy Oh, great rubber. Too rich for my blood though.
Backspin, as the bounce is closer to the net and is slower over the table.

🎉
I think it´s topspin! 😅
Lucky indeed, it wasn't bad at all! 😂
:D
Your bat angle is quite flat at the hitting point and you take your ball early in your demi circle movement so I believe it is backspin.
Topspin, easy to see with 0,25 playback speed 😀
Oooooooo, are you sure? Even at 0.25?!?!?
@@TheTableTennisServiceGuyI'm pretty sure too. Topspin
@@TheTableTennisServiceGuy eeehm, Not any more 😅 by the way, I have a receiving-problem 😊
Topspin.
Sure?!?!
Please show at the beginning of your video how the serve looks so we can decide if we need this video. Give a preview
backspin, early touch/ brush
Lucky !
Topspin, I think 🤔
Lucky! I'm a beginner, if somebody serves a backhand serve like this, should I aim the bat to the left or right if I want to return the ball to the middle of the table?
General role is aim for where the bat is coming from in the motion. His bat starts at our right, so aim to our right.
