saddest thing is that the player backlash probably didn't do much directly. Valve's unconditional refunds were devaluing the game so much that Sony HAD to step in to maintain "property value".
If we didn't raise attention about how much this affected the industry, and our fellow players in the non-PSN countries, people wouldn't have thought to request a refund at all. It was an important part of the movement that forced Sony to cave. This also sends a message to all us gamers that, when all hell breaks loose, Steam will have OUR back, not the tone-deaf publisher's. Another W for Steam.

Indeed. I wanna Helldive with my friends, but I'm the only one who's in a "restricted" country, so I couldn't even buy the game when I was supposed to due to all the BS from Sony.
Funnily enough, I actually left a negative review because of all the very questionable choices with balancing and their anti-cheat of choice - in a co-op game where all the data regarding your character is stored server-side. Then I heard about the PSN account requirement change. That gold badge requiring a PSN account is still on the steam page, by the way.
How about no. Changing it back like nothing ever happened just shows Sony they can experiment with these ridiculous requirements for playing their games at basically no cost to them when shortsighted idiots instantly flip their review to positive again. They're a massive corporation, they don't care about your little thumbs up, they do care about a massive amount of thumbs downs though since that directly impacts sells in a negative way. It also shows Arrowhead they can have the absolute worst communication and PR skills I've ever seen from a developer and not have to change how they inform players of extremely important information.
@@grimmsby3011 "absolute worst communication and PR skills" Arrowhead didn't even make this decision (Sony did) and responded immediately and worked to sort it out.. what are you talking about??
i think it is important to note that the psn requirement was always meant to be in the game, and even was implemented day 1. they temporarily disabled it after day 1 because of all the server issues etc they were dealing with on launch
Irrelevant. Most players were not day one players, and the expectation was not made at all clear because 1)you can skip it 2) its not mentioned explicitly elsewhere 3) it has not been mentioned or enforeced for 3 months.
@@sturmmagnunstein1008 Yet it is not irrelevant, because even on day 1 they sold in all those countries where they don't have PSN. This was sheer and utter incompetence on Sony's part.
Yeeees. Usually I'm pretty hopeless towards the idea of video game players uniting as a hivemind to make a statement loud enough for companies to actually be impacted, as clearly that hasn't been happening enough seeing as Ubisoft doesn't seem to be slowing down in it's garbage practices and such. But seeing a wildly positively received game, flip upside down in a matter of a day and until the publisher actually has to do something about it. That gives me hope.
I'm happy we were able to get them to backtrack that decision, it shows we can have an impact on the development of games if we want. However... If only we would stop getting corporate "We want what's best for you" responses from companies. As if they ever had players' in mind when mandating that change. It would have taken them a few hours to realize a chunk of their playerbase would lose access to the game, if they cared. Not to mention that forcing an account does absolutely nothing to benefit the player, unless you're doing cross-platform accounts. Which could also have been forced ONLY if the player wanted it, rather than mandate it for everyone. In the case of them being able to ban players, they certainly could have done that by banning a Steam account. I also don't understand why someone couldn't just link a new PSN account if they were banned, so...

And that, guys gals and NB pals, is why you should join your industry's union and fight for unionization (dare I say, democracy) in the games industry. All power to all the people!

Too bad gamers didn't step up when publishers started rolling out microtransactions and subscription-based games. If we had collectively told them to shove it so they were stuck with a $200 million flop, we wouldn't be where we are today.
Yeah, it's kind of a hollow and pathetic way of patting themselves on the back when every other big developer/publisher is shoving mtx and live service games down everyone's throats, which is objectively worse, but all you see from that is impotent whining while they still buy those same games. But it's not like Sony backed off because of people whining anyway, it was because Valve didn't want to deal with the legal headache and started handing out refunds and delisting the game from certain countries.
having to create accounts has literally kept me from playing so many games. I hate it with all my heart. Just give me the game I paid for and let me play it. Ubisoft probably the biggest offender here
"everyone hated that. I mean who wants to create an account?" bro this game is on Steam, the biggest bottom feeding platform in the gaming industry right now. They are the ones who normalised needing an account to play a game. It's unnecessary and not even to mention the insanely high 30% cut they take for the "privilege" of putting you game on there, which ALSO costs $100 USD.
Agree on Valve not being your friend. It's the company that normalised loot boxes for frick's sake. The difference here is that a you can decide not to make a Valve account even though they dominate the industry. You can't decide to keep playing Heldivers, a game you "own", without making another account.
Btw, this is yet another reason why I only use Steam. No way any other game distribution platforms would be so chill and supportive of a cause like Steam, refunding everyone who asks due to the shit that Sony did. They're the only ones to continuously prove why we can trust them
It's not really a win, though. The bigger issue was that 177 countries don't have PSN access. Helldivers 2 was de-listed from those countries, and then Sony announced their "backtrack." All they did was make it so you don't need a PSN account - those 177 countries are still de-listed. For the countries that were losing access to the game because of the PSN requirement, their situation hasn't changed; for everyone else, they just don't have to sign up for, or login to, a PSN account now.
