- Ghosts of the Frank is a 5 episode docuseries created by Dan Noakes which highlights Noakes' solo winter traverse across the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness in Idaho while also exploring the drama of the people who once lived, worked, and died there.
Ghosts of the Frank takes viewers on an emotional experience as Noakes combines backpacking and skiing in efforts to connect with his father from whom he was separated during his formative years. The traverse itself is a death defying feat, done by very few, that tests Noakes’ mental limits. The series goes beyond skiing by examining the controversy of the Forest Service’s efforts of burning down cabins as it acquired private land in the name of preservation. It leaves the audience to answer for themselves if the mainstream Wilderness narrative has silenced the whisperings of the ghosts that still roam in the Frank Church today.
Wonderful documentary about a fantastic and challenging Traverse. Great first episode! Looking forward to the next one.

I wanna see some logistics: did you do a 12 day carry or did you somehow swing a resupply in there?
Thanks Fibs. Resupplied in the middle of it. But like true Frank Church fashion, I flew out (not planned) and then I came back. But just like when we were out there, I had my resupply shipped. I resupplied in a place called Thomas Creek, it is about 2 miles away from Marble Creek.
Makes sense: an unplanned flight out is a prerequisite for any good adventure in the Frank! Excited to see the story about the winter resupply and psychological turmoil in choosing to return and finish the traverse
(I don't ever want to hear about marble creek again =P)

What make/model are your ski poles? Do you like them?
One pole I found abandoned on a ice field down Mt. Whitney that I glissaded down 5 years ago. The other I bought 12 years ago at a thrift store for $3. I like both of them. But I will need an upgrade soon.
But the ones you see on this film were a gift, and I just recently lost them because I left them at a ski resort on accident outside of the car and drove off and didn't realize it until a days later. I can't remember the brand.

Why one pole for the traverse?
cause the other is used to film myself. It's behind the camera.

I don’t get how that is done, but I thought it was something like that. The camera (GoPro? subtracts the pole from the picture?). I do a lot of BC skiing and figured you wouldn’t do one pole without it being part of what you were doing to make the film.
@@at1970 You have a gopro camera mounted to your pole with a pole attachment. You stick the pole on the ground. Press record. Walk past your pole with the gopro recording. Stop. Walk back to the pole. press record again to stop the recording. Then you pick up your pole and continue your hike.

Wow! That’s not the high tech thing I was thinking it was. That’s amazing. I can never get anybody to hold still for pictures so I just blast away with the camera while it’s happening and it looks like it. Of course everybody is interested when you get home in seeing themselves. You obviously don’t have that problem by yourself. Well done.
I saw that you were a Wasatch guy. I live in Idaho now but was a skipatrolman in the Wasatch decades ago when we toured on cable bindings. Fond memories. Best skiing on earth. But as the old timers say, unfortunately they know that. Utah is what Idaho will become if we dont realize more people does not make for a better lifestyle or save nature. Be safe.
