I remember when the 1600E came out (about 1968). It was, effectively, a 1600GT with "accoutrements". It looked very graceful and you could turn up _anywhere_ and not be ashamed. It was, sort of, an oversized Radford Mini Cooper. All male teenagers saw the 1600E as a car we could aspire to and have a reasonable chance of attaining. We all wanted Ferraris but, deep down, we knew this was a pipe dream. Not so with the 1600E. It was fast, luxurious elegance and was a realistic proposition.

I remember seeing it the first time - we walked down to the garage and dad was kidding me that maybe there wasn't anything new in there. The Cedric was a beautiful car - smooth, silent, relatively quick (compared to the glacially slow Cambridge) and it was metallic maroon with silver interior and had quad headlamps. 13 years later I would drive it myself, my first car. In 1978, when I was 15, my uncle who was a great mechanic, gave an engine overhaul for a farmer friend (in Ireland), to his 1968 Mark II Cortina. He was weeks at that car and did a great job fixing it. The car was only ten years old at the time and was in beautiful condition. Metallic green was the colour. When he decided to test the car, he insisted on his 13 year old son to drive it. The boy was a good driver, but wild at the wheel. The strip of land he tried it on was unusual, that it had a bog on each side. The strip of land was about half a mile long, leading into the farm. We all watched as the boy drove the car down this strip of land. He did about thirty, as his father told to do. But on his way back, he put his foot down. The car skidded and took a quick right turn into the bog. The boy got out, but the car sunk like a brick. A couple of days later, the farmer took a tractor, near the bog, to kind of pull the car out. The tractor got stuck, so he got another tractor to get the stuck tractor out and that one got stuck too. My uncle told me that the car was never taken out of the bog and that the tractors were stuck there for years. I wish I had a video of that.

I love how this is about about a car, but it is to remind ourselves of our dads and what they do for us. Me and my dad we have a tough love/hate relationship. We love each other, but we tend to have big arguments time to time. But every time I watch this clip I just remind myself of the bmw 330d e46 that my dad owns for 19 years and of how I am proud of him. Let’s protect our relationships and value them as much as we can. They won’t be here forever, and that is heartbreaking.

This episode hits you with a 4 stage emotional combo kill, the buildup of them talking fondly about their dads, then the scene in the cathedrak with real classic car enthusiatns who love thier cars like its a family memember, then the scene where they recap all the amazing stuff they did (I'm balling by this point) then finish you off with clarkson crying on the show.

All credit to the BBC for allowing the use of the original Top Gear footage. Yes the three stoogies will continue, but to lose the magic of the studio, and later, the tent, is a huge loss. I have watched this twice on prime and both times I've had tears. To see Jeremy's tears I just totally lose it emotionally. I will watch over and over the original Top Gear, and I will watch over and over, the Grand Tour. I can't expalin why. There is no logical explanation. Jeremy, James and Richard I thank you from my heart. You feel like family. Long may you contnue together in good health and bring us the laughter we love so much. Cheers...

I appreciate some people don't have their real father in their life and I feel for you. I used the word father because he obviously did father you. The word 'Dad' is reserved for very special men who actually are an amazing part of your life and hit you the hardest when they are gone.

The Church segment together with the very last part of the episode in the tent were the most emotional of the GT and some of the most emotional ever from the trio, especially Jeremy in the last 17 years or so.
Jeremy said that he got emotional because he never got the change to say his farewell to TopGear, in fact he said the day before he was still doing it, the day after it was gone. Although the audience, track and talk show part of the show may be gone forever after so many years, knowing that more specials with them three are coming is nothing short of relieving. Also because it’s what I’m really interested about in this show: cars, adventures, amazing scenarios and ... them.

When I had to go under the knife he didn't say take care of my son he said take care of my friend, while holding back tears, just remembered that makes me choke up. Btw truck was a 2002 dodge dakota in maroon. Sold it 2 years ago. Cried that night.

I'm in America and although I can't relate precisely to the car lovingly described by Jezza here, I will say my Dad introduced me to the combustion engine. We tore them down, rebuilt them and squeezed every single hp possible out of that little Chevy 283. It was a glorious experience. I miss my Dad.

It had recaro front seats, front foglights, frontchinspoiler, and rear trunk spoiler. I was so proud of him the same way felt Jezza of his dad. I thought i was the king 😏

I had a 1600E!!!!!. Actually it wasn't mine, it was my company car on lease for a couple of years but by gum did I enjoy it. It had a version of the Lotus Cortina suspension so it felt good on the road and the tarted up interior suited my junior management aspirations. Cross country it was very quick but it ran out of puff on Mways - it really needed a 5-speed box. I took it from home to Abersoch - nearly 300 miles on mostly rural roads in under 5 hours and enjoyed every yard.

You've just described the exact same feeling when my dad arrived home with his 1600E in 1970 , 4YI was the reg number. Only difference was his had a leather padded centre on the steering wheel. In 1979 he traded it in for a disastrous Opel Rekord Berlina diesel that broke his heart and his wallet. I was 18 then and had begged him for the Cortina but to no avail but in about 83/84 I saw it on a country road with a for sale sign on it and bought it back & pulled the birds for years after 😋
