  • Herman Mashaba is at his best when cruising off-piste, fielding difficult questions. He had quite a few to navigate during the interview and audience engagement section of his keynote at the 5th BizNews Conference in the Drakensberg, held in March 2023. Mashaba began with a glowing endorsement of political rival Gayton McKenzie’s ‘true and riveting’ keynote address before on to a wide range of topics including how his creation, Action SA, intends playing a significant role in South Africa’s future - as either its biggest or #2 political party.
    Timestamp below
00:00 Herman Mashaba on what he thought of Gayton Mackenzie’s speech
02:49 His thoughts on the death penalty
05:47 His views on illegal immigration
09:25 On finding a way to make peace with Helen Zille and the DA for the rainbow coalition
19:30 On how he will get the 70 to 80% to come out and vote
22:17 On how he will deal with the issue of immigration
24:32 On BRICS and the growing Russian influence
26:11 On if he’s willing to go into a coalition with the EFF for the sake of removing the ANC
32:52 In the event that the ANC doesn't get 50% of the vote in 2024. What chances of the ANC actually giving up power?
35:48 On if he believes there will be a free and fair election in 2024
39:04 On making peace with Helen Zille
    42:32 On property
    44:27 On the KZN riots
    46:34 End

Your bias for the DA, Alec, is quite telling. Herman maintains that ActionSA did everything in its ability to get the multi-party coalition governments in the metros to work; even Gayton affirmed this. Yet you choose to push your own DA propaganda.
Every coalition partner has stated that the DA and Helen are the biggest barriers to a viable coalition administration. It's on record, even VF+ alluded to this. The DA has long since forgotten about the black vote, and they are not even attempting to win it. How can we salvage South Africa if we just focus on the white suburbanian middle-class vote whilst disregarding the majority black, township, and rural vote?
Herman is just about the appropriate leader to unite South Africans of all colors and origins, rural and urban, in the common objective of rescuing our country from the ANC's criminal enterprise.

There is no doubt that following Helen’s return the DA lost ground and I feel that their arrogant , superior stance will not be well received by the majority of South Africans . If they had a leader that people could really relate to and then support and back that leader through thick and thin , then their is a chance . This is not a comment maligning Mrs Zille as her skills and track record may be impeccable , but perhaps not relevant in these times , in this environment. I think Herman rightly can not work with someone who has breached trust and reneges on an agreement ( assuming this is the case ) - if not they must sort it out , but if it is true I think he is right . One can not sell their soul to the devil , in the name of expediency . It’s not complex - say what you will do and then do what you say .

As a black person. My only problem with both Mashaba and Gayton is that they lack political consciousness. It's all good and well that we all want the corrupt ANC out of power but then what after that?
As for the DA, I will stick my elbow in my ear first before ever voting for them. Hellen Zille is a caricature of what the DA is all about.

The lack of political conscience of Glayton brought normal toilets in the Karoo. With his lack of a “political conscience” he build a baker, and never took a pay in the municipality. What else do you want?
Right now we need people who will remove us from both the sesspool of hopeless that both the DA and the ANC have created, and what the EFF wants to bring on the table. We need economic and social stability and the political consciencess will follow. We have no energy power right now, we have crime sky-rocketting daily, we have bad education system.

@@mthokozisilanga4497 Yes I do concur with what you are saying. We have all been let down badly especially black people. In a country like South Africa however, the worst thing we can do at this stage is voting in people who lack political conscience. The struggle was never about the basic things. The struggle was about the land and the economic emancipation of the masses of our people.
Gayton and Mashaba are hopelessly out of tune with the socioeconomic zeitgeist both locally and economically. They both may succeed in keeping the lights on and making sure everything works but that's it. It ends there. They don't have the vision to take us back on coarse of equality and shared prosperity. They don't have a plan to lift black people from being relegated to being beggars in their own country.
Every economic indicator shows that the gap between the poor and the rich has widened since 1994 and Gayton and Mashaba's response to that is to do away with BBBEE while offering zero alternative plan respectively.
Mashaba always tells us about how he started Black Like Me. Sure I respect him for what he has achieved but he needs to realise that his story is an exception not the norm. He needs to disabuse himself from thinking that every black person who is impoverished can simply pull themselves up by the by their bootstraps and lift themselves up from poverty without any assistance. As for Gayton McKenzie, him and his friend/partner Kenny are direct beneficiaries of BBBEE. They never would have been in the financial position they are in today if it wasn't for BBBEE.
I myself never would have been in the fortunate financial position I am in today if it wasn't for BBBEE and I cannot deny that. As black people we must never allow our own narrative to be taken over by other people including the very deceptive South African mainstream media. We need to take full authority over our own narrative and build from there.

Herman does not identify the problem clearly. I believe it is this: The DA has tried hard to deprive ActionSA and coalition partners of political successes - power positions in coalitions, because it is, and will be, their main rival. Hence all the maneuverings, and even the propaganda (actually cringe-worthy) about ActionSA not acting in accordance with agreements. It amounts to overly hard bargaining. But the coalition partners will retaliate and wear Zille down in due course.

What the Buffalo will do is to scare the elderly in rural South Africa, telling them apartheid will come back or threaten their social grants and of course food hampers.

Ah Mashaba disappoints me on the BRICS issue. He doesn't see the potential in a changing world. Do business with the west and BRICS at the same time, stay neutral. I hope IFP, FF+ and PA will make Mashaba see that BRICS is a good opportunity. I know the DA's position because they just bend the knee to the west. Many business analysts have explained the benefits of BRICS. Yes, we do trade more with the west, but 20 years down the line, we will probably be trading more with the east. Those who don't believe this, just look at Africa's trading history in 2001 and now in 2023. China took over from the USA as Africa's largest trading partner and now India has overtaken the UK in GDP, so please Herman, do not separate yourself from BRICS when many blossoming nations are begging to be part of BRICS. Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Argentina, Mexico, Algeria, Morocco, Nigeria are all trying to apply to be a part of BRICS! Don't leave when so many nations want to join.
