      i mean theres allies in terms of "well were friends but i dont have your back unless it benefits me in some way" then theres Civilization style allies where "well my ally went to war, looks like im at war now too" sadly all them Trump supports want to go back to just ignoring the worlds problems and focusing on US yet those are the same people still creating racial tension in the country preventing us from progressing in any meaningful way. irony i guess

    *scratches head * Maybe I got it wrong, but I thought Donna couldn't handle the emotional intensity of their suffering, and that's why she told him to stop it, not because she couldn't face how it was really awful to be happening..

      That's how I interpret Donna's sadness. Her empathy was overwhelming her. She was following the Doctor's lead & knew he was taking action. I think the Ood also believe that because they thank "Doctor-Donna"

      @@karennowicki241 I see the same thing. I also think her "I want to go home" wasn't to run away there and then, but to help the Ood, then go home. But by the end of the episode she realizes that she and the doctor can help people so decides to stay.

    Donna is a really empathetic character. It grounds the Doctor, reminds him of his own humanity. You'll be reminded of this later in the season based on how that plays into her arch but that was the whole point of her giving the "heart in the hands" speech about the ood

    I’m really fascinated by your interpretation of Donna. I see her as far more empathetic than either Rose or Martha (who are both empathetic themselves - I think the Doctor sees that as a prerequisite of being his companion) and her lack of ability to cope with the song is a lack of strength in her, rather than not wanting to help. She really really doesn’t care that they don’t look like her (see her reaction to the first ood she sees who she wants to help so much even after it goes at her with its rabidness). For me Donna’s empathy is exactly the same in this episode as it is in the fires of pompeii and so far I find it to be her most overwhelming quality as a person.

  • @MJE-riffs
    @MJE-riffs 15 днів тому +37

    There's a lovely bit of continuity, when the Doctor says the Ood's homeworld is in the same system as the Sense Sphere. The Sense Sphere was the homeworld of the Sensorites, beings from one of the very earliest Doctor Who stories, back in1964. Their design was kind of similar to that of the Ood.

  • @NJH01
    @NJH01 15 днів тому +25

    Imo it wasn’t so much that Donna couldn’t bare the fact of how depressing this situation is and is more so she literally couldn’t take how overwhelming hearing the song was whereas because The Doctor is stronger mentally he can cope with it, also I don’t think that Donna didn’t want to do anything about it it’s more so having Donna point out how inhumane the treatment of the Ood was grounded The Doctor into realising he should do better and help free them

  • @marywilka8769
    @marywilka8769 15 днів тому +11

    it’s not that donna doesn’t want to face what’s happening it’s that she’s SO compassionate and empathetic i think going into it only expecting a funny character out of her might not allow you to really appreciate that her compassion is probably her greatest character trait. that’s why she fought so hard in pompeii it’s not that she’s not suited for it, it’s that she knows exactly what the rules are and she doesn’t agree with them because they fundamentally go against what she values and cares about. i mean you can see this even in the runaway bride after having arguably one of the worst days she still puts herself in front of the doctor to protect him and shows mercy to the racnoss.

    Interesting facts about the music: Sang in Latin, there are two separate songs related to the Ood; "The Song of Captivity," and "The Song of Freedom." The words are absolutely beautiful, and my Animal Rights Activist heart is in love with both ❤
    The first part of the Ood song is:
    Cum tacent clament. Serva me, servato te
    This translates as:
    "While we are silent, we are screaming. Save me and I will save you."
    And the song of freedom is:
    Dum inter homines, sumus colamus humanita (cum tacent clament)
    Which translates as:
    "When amongst humans, we should be humane."
    Much Love, and I look forward to traveling in the Tardis each and every episode 💜💜

    In the Pompeii episode, the Doctor immediately says that he won't save anyone, so it makes sense that Donna insists. In this episode and in almost any episode, saving those in trouble is stated by default, so she doesn’t need to spell it out. and not because they are not like her. And she also asks a lot of important questions, which put the Doctor in the right mood.

    Take no notice of those who criticise the writing of Jodies series, it was fine with some really good episodes, every episode better than for example Fear Her. There are a small number of people who complain who seem to want every episode to be the same, they seem to think it's their show. I am glad the show runners ignore them. They represent a miniscule percentage of the audience, most viewers watch, enjoy and say nothing. The nay sayers make way too much noise for their size.

    I’m sure all the other comments have addresses it but I feel that your interpretation of Donna may be clouded due to her “funny-isms” and the fact y’all are still figuring her character out. But you do come to see that Donna is one of the most empathic characters in the show. I feel it’s her compassion that overwhelms her when listening to the Ood song and she tells the doctor to stop it. Her saying she wants to go home may mean after the mission is done. It makes sense too after two very hard hitting and emotional adventures. That’s my interpretation of Donna. All we’re asking is give Donna a fair chance cause as you’ll see in the upcoming episodes, her humanity is what the Doctor will draw upon

    Excellent Observations: Science fiction often serves as a filter to call attention to societal ills that many people don't want to face/address. The original Star Trek series was pivital to addressing the social issues that unfolded in the 1960's.
    Empathy and compassion is often reserved for people that look like them. How often do you hear a politician say I support this law "as a father of a daughter" The implication is that I can not feel for you unless it affects me.

    In defense of Donna's actions in Pompeii compared to here, the episodes actually got switched around because they felt this was too dark for the second episode. Applying it in that context, it could be argued that Donna's actions in Pompeii were a direct result of her learning a lesson from the Ood. As it stands however, I agree with you that it comes across like her action was all about their appearance.

    As far as I'm concerned, woke is a good thing. I like your analogy of the pill wrapped in cheese, and Rekkai is right, some people have their cultural blinders on so tight they still won't see the message, because it's not what they want to hear. Syntell kinda shaming me a bit there toward the end. I have 2 BLM shirts I wear but the most action I take is arguing with people online, and maybe some donations online. My excuse has been that my wife going through immigration, I didn't want any arrests or anything to mess that up, but yeah, I should do more... I just don't know what to do. There have been some instances right in my face where I stood up for POC or people who were LGBTQIA+, but I don't march at Pride or for anything. I've never been to a protest. I should probably fix that someday before I'm too old. I've always been an ally, but I need to be an accomplice, well said!

    3:39, there are drawings online of what some fans think the Tardis should look. Most of the concept art envisions it to be a massive spacecraft (as big as a city) that puts that rocket to shame. I wish they would do an episode where they futz with the some thingamabob to show that exterior in our universe.

    • @TheDoctor4124
      @TheDoctor4124 15 днів тому +1

      The inside of Tardis is near infinite. The books from back in the classic series described that the beginnings of their time technology was based on timelords ability to harness black holes. They used this tech to build tardis. So inside being dimensionaly transcendental is because they are using black hole and singularity within it to traverse time and provide access to a whole pocket dimension which is why inside can’t really be drawn since it can change at random and can be any type room

    • @HuntingViolets
      @HuntingViolets 15 днів тому +1

      I read an article where a physicist said that the outside of the TARDIS and the inside are in different dimensions. So the outside is kind of like a door to the other dimension where the inside resides. I would like to see some of the other rooms someday, but maybe imagining them is enough.

    Also, with Donna, I think she couldn’t handle the sadness of it all; but she cared and fought for the Ood. Donna’s a great character. I’m a lot like her. I get very overwhelmed by injustice. And I will fight. But I know I sometimes I can’t handle it emotionally because I feel it so strongly. Personally I agree with Syntell's assessment of that scene with Donna, I remember feeling so disappointed in her when she said she wanted to go home. I do think she is empathetic and compassionate, we see that at the start of the episode, but she's also used to being able to ignore things around her and focus inward when things get tough. When she asked to have the song taken away, she has the luxury of turning it off, something the Ood, who are living that experience, do not. I do think she starts to do better afterwards, like when she understood that the nature of the Ood made them peaceful, but not willingly subservient as the humans chose to interpret them. I think Donna, seeing the Doctor take action made her realize that by not hearing the song made her little better than the people who own the Ood and don't stop to consider their experience.

    I think you got Donna wrong in this episode. Despite the boistrous loud behaviour, deep down she's clearly very empathetic, the Oods song isn't just a song, she couldn't hear it because the song is psychic and the Doctor opened her mind to an entire races feelings of being imprisoned and it overwhelmed her for the moment. But she was questioning what was going on even before they figured out what was going on, the Doctor even tries to fire back at her about who made her clothes when she points out the slavery.
    She even makes the point about how the Ood must be peaceful and trusting because they carry part of their brains in their hands.
    Also right at the start despite being shocked by the dying Oods appearance she still tries to be kind in her own clumsy way and comfort the Ood.

    The current writing team for Ncuti and Millie is the same one for series 1-4 of new who, so this is partly why it feels cohesive even with the obvious modernization of the fifteenth doctor.
    Russell T. Davis, the showrunner, is one of the most celebrated British TV writers we have over here. His series "It's a Sin" about the 1980s AIDS crisis in the gay community is an absolute masterpiece, and won tons of awards. He is a champion of diversity and of the underdog. He doesn't always get it right, but he puts a huge amount of heart and compassion into his work. The BBC recently released a documentary about his writing career called: "Imagine...
    Russell T Davis: The Doctor and Me." If you can get access to it, I highly recommend it as it will give you some additional insights, but wait until the end of series 4 to avoid Doctor Who spoilers.

I enjoyed the reaction and loved the afterthoughts review. "I don't need an ally, I need an accomplice" is a going to be an unforgettable quote for me.
    One thing to note that you didn't comment on which was when Donna says she doesn't own slaves the Doctor replies "who do you think made your clothes" so there was also that critique of modern society which has become even more relevant with the rise of shein and temu and all the horror stories about their pay, working conditions and culture.

    Dot & Bubble was definitely all the things you said about it, as well as what some commenters might ‘explain’ - more the one interpretation can be right. I didn’t like how many people were jumping to the comments to say “um, actually this episode…” when they only, supposedly, know because they watch the Behind-the-scenes show which spelt it out for them

    • @littlemissmello
      @littlemissmello 15 днів тому +1

      I mean, I didn't watch the behind the scenes anything and for me it felt obvious while watching the episode that it was explicitly about racism. Maybe I'm too much in the political bubble because there were a few common dog whistles that relate to white supremacy that can't be explained away by just class. But in the end the root of most discrimination is classism of course.
      I think people were making it a media literacy thing whereas the point was that it was covert, wasn't it? That Black people or people of other marginalized classes deal with micro aggressions at a regular basis but because it seems so harmless, subtle or insignificant, so _polite,_ it's hard for the people who don't deal with it to recognize it, acknowledge it, or even take it seriously, and sometimes it's hard to say whether it's because you're of that marginalized group or it _is_ just innocent.
      I think the episode was an honest invitation for people, specifically white people, to self-reflect and inspect their own blind spot and I thought it was cleverly done and written.
      I wasn't "um actually-ing" anyone in comment sections though haha!

    Yeah been waiting for this ones discussion for sure - and ofc you guys didnt disappoint!
    I always chuckle when folks say silly things like "Doctor Who was never political or maybe it was but not in your face like it is now in INSERT YEAR HERE"
    The show has been pretty definitively on the more leftist side of politics (European leftist on top of that. For our American friends - in other words: communist lol, Im kidding ofc with that last one) since its inception, even if you do have to adjust for era - no trans-rights episode in the 60s obviously, the world wasnt there yet. But like...the first big bad guys were a freaking Naz* allegory for crying out loud.
    That being said - just because the message may be something oneself may agree with, the episode should still be "good". Some writers manage to excel at both messaging AND storytelling, others struggle - sometimes unfortunately with both aspects.
    This story I personally thought worked well enough, and it had some wonderfully acted moments but its also slightly idk... vanilla? - Overall Id give it around a 7/10.

    Don’t apologize, I never thought about it this way but I can understand that this kind of thing must be tiresome. From the first time the Ood showed up I thought it was commentary on the human race’s history of slavery, and how sad it is that they are still doing it in the future, and will we ever be better. But I’m looking at this a little differently, your comments have made me think a little deeper, which is always a good thing. You see it how you see it, don’t apologize for that.

    The great philosophical discussion shows why Dr Who is so important in the lexicon. The Ood ,a very kind intelligent species represent the many millions of ethnic human beings who have been subjugated, abused and enslaved for being "different" and the caged and factory farmed animals of the Earth also. The vile racism, misogyny and discrimination is still rampant in society and the writers of Dr Who strive to shine a light on this evilness. Jodie Whittaker was terrific in the role but she suffered so much criticism from the women hating trolls. Ncuti is now being bombarded with racism and homophobic comments in the guise of "anti-woke" whatever that even means. Dr Who is tremendously important in the fight against discrimination and inequality. It shows the eventual deadly consequences of hatred and sectarianism. It leads to mass murder and genocide as we see so tragically happening now.

    • @Jumpyman_thegamerYT
      @Jumpyman_thegamerYT 15 днів тому

      'Homophobic' 'racist' 's*xist' and 'misogyny' have all lost their meaning. They used to mean something once upon a time, now they're just a generic 'catch-all'. Commonly used as buzzwords by people who've run out of things to say in an argument. Clever in a way. By attempting to deflect any form of criticism from themselves, they accuse someone of being hateful. Which in turn prevents anyone from saying anything bad about them.
      Also, you do know that a number of women didn't like Jody either right? Or do you think that all women think the same?

    I'm so glad to finally watch your reaction to this, it's been really amazing watching and learning from your guys perception of the show as people who are a lot more race conscious than myself - I am white lol so I can only understand to a certain degree.
    One of the major problems that I had with the Ood is that agt the end of this episode the Doctor just declares that the issue of Ood Slavery is over and that they are all on their way home, to me that's so handwavy - I personally feel like this would be the beginning of a very long journey for the Ood to even being accepted in the galaxy. It's something I've really touched upon in my own storytelling as I've been making a DnD game for some friends set in the Whoniverse, one of the major storylines of the campaign is how the Ood are treated post "freedom" with them still being slaves on many worlds & not having the right to vote and such. It's a story that I really hope they pick up in the future and expand upon.

    Rekkai, I haven’t seen or heard any fan decry Ncuti being the Doctor because of him being black. Any negative comments about him is that he’s playing himself, and not playing at being ‘The Doctor.’
    All previous Doctors have had their fans and detractors. God, you may see or read that David Tennant and his successor, Matt Smith are the best thing since sliced bread, but there are many who hate their portrayals of the Doctor by these two actors. Hell, there are even some fans who don’t like Tom Baker, the 4th Doctor, and he’s generally regarded by most fans as being the best Doctor ever in the history of the show.
    If anything, I think what doesn’t help Ncuti’s cause is the show runner, Russell T. Davies. When he brought Doctor Who back in 2005, any ‘agendas’ he may have had, were kept to a minimum in the stories, and weren’t so ‘in your face’ as they are now. Take Captain Jack. When we first meet him he comes across (without signposting it) as bisexual. He can fancy Rose and then later, in the finale you see him kiss Rose and the Doctor on the lips. The difference then was the fact that the Doctor, in particular, didn’t respond and kiss him back. That’s because the Doctor, going back to William Hartnell in 1963, has always been portrayed as an asexual character.
    Fast forward 19 years and Russell T. Davies is now a much more powerful writer/showrunner than he was back in 2005, and it seems that there isn’t anyone (the BBC, Disney) who are prepared to stand up to him and say, “Sorry, Russell, but that’s a bit crap!” or “Russell, do you not think that’s a bit too much?” So now he has the Doctor openly attracted to other males (Ricky September, Rogue), culminating in a full blown kiss which has sent many old school Doctor Who fans (including Gay fans) into meltdown.
    Now, I’m not saying that it’s wrong to highlight in stories like ‘Dot and Bubble’ racism and rich kids being privileged, but here it’s done so much more subtly than in ‘Rogue’ where we see the Doctor actively lusting after someone (and had it been a woman it would still have been wrong), and that’s something that the Doctor has never done, whether he’s been a male or a female. I get that RTD wants to include the LGBTQ+ minorities, but should it be to the detriment of the majority who watch Doctor Who, and who don’t want ‘messaging’ and ‘agendas’ stuffed down their throats but just want fun, action adventure sci-fi which simply tells a good story?
    Ncuti could be a great Doctor, but to flourish he needs a different show runner who is going to bring out the very best in him and make him an ‘Everyman’ Doctor, one who’s straight and gay fans can love him for who he is playing and not what RTD wants him to represent.

      Be so fr. From the moment he was announced, before there was even any footage available of him, his performance, any glimpse of the story, a large part of the fandom - the same subset as always - have been saying the most vile things about him being black or queer or "woke". To pretend otherwise is just disingenuous.

      First of all, it's the majority, not the minority. The ratings are the worst ever, even after drawing new Disney audiences.
      Second, it has nothing to do with being "open-minded," but having a mind at all. This is a show with a 60-year legacy and a wide range of "open-minded" audiences. When the vast majority of them are forced to walk away, maybe YOU are the problem. Ever consider that? Or are you just going to keep repeating the official propaganda?

    No. Dr Who has always been calling out the bullshit of racism, and prejudice, and hate and they haven't been subtle about it at all. And the funny thing is the racists and bigots and misogynists have all been blissfully ignorant... in their bubble, you might say. Somehow they've been able to miss how on the nose this is. Same for Star Trek. How do they think that the show that featured the first interracial kiss on tv hasn't always been WAF?

  • @roborob4296
    @roborob4296 15 днів тому +4

    ive always tried to be pretty open minded with doctor who. so with the gender change i was hopeful that it would still feel the same and we would get some great stories. the problem with jodis era is they tried to change too much i think. new doctor of a new gender, new show runner, shorter seasons, new extreme focus on woke topics. It was a lot. I know a lot of people who quit just because they felt like they were being preached to every episode when they just wanted to sit down and watch tv to relax. But at the same time as all these other issues they wrote a much colder closed off doctor as well. the emotion wasnt there the majority of the time. also the companions were clearly choosen to check a box but then they never really did anything with the companions to go along with the reason for even adding them in the first place. It was kind of just a hot mess.
    I am loving Ncuti as the doctor. Some of the episodes have been a bit weird...... certainly didnt help when he wasnt available to film for multiple episodes.... odd choice? why not just delay the stuff? its not like Who hasnt had long delays. Hell look at the delays between seasons of Red Dwarf lol. I think with Ncuti you have a double whammy too because black AND gay?! I have no problem with either facts and if people thought they werent going to have the doctor have any kind of male on male romance...... i mean come on. But now since the actor is gay and kisses another man thats somehow a big deal? Captain Jack kissed the doctor and that was fine..... John Barrowman is gay. so whats the issue? that its a black on white gay kiss?
    (FYI I made sure to check the patreon to see you guys had watched Rogue to know i wasnt spoiling anything.

      The doctor and captain Jack kiss was fine cause it didn’t mean anything emotionally, Jack has always been that type of flirtatious character, but the kiss in rogue I didn’t like, never have been a fan of doctor relationships except river, when that happened I feel like everything that had built with river was shit on, I know river is dead but she is a time traveller so it’s not like the Doctor cant meet her again.
