    So sorry about the weird jump straight into the video, somehow the whole intro got ruined and the video was unusable. This is the wrap up of the trailer build for my recent Grand Hauler build. Many thanks to the RC Elf for helping out with all of this!! The lighting in the trailer was giving me fits from day one and it took some time but got the result I wanted and it is fantastic!! I am very happy with the matching paint scheme and all the extra time and effort it took to make it what it is. I can easily see how people get so caught up in building and customizing these vehicles. Make sure you stay to the end as I have some clips of myself being myself!!!
    Thanks again to the RC Elf and let get into the video!

    I'm SO glad that I replaced ALL of the Phillips Head Screws with more realistic looking Hex Head Screws. It's personal preference, and a pricey one... But the smoother flatter Heads might also prevent scratching. I hope!!
    I definitely appreciate how much work goes into these. You've really done a fantastic job on yours!

      I think if you don't have the electronic leg kit you should be fine. That kit adds a few things to the coupler and causes it to stick down a little further. I have had a suggestion to shim up the coupler on the truck a couple millimeters to help avoid it catching on the fenders. If you are driving on flat ground you should be fine. Mine was from handling it on the bench while it was coupled together and caused it. Those hardware swaps are not cheap.

      Like I mentioned in my previous response, most of the Tamiya Semi electronics are early 90's technology. They don't seem anxious to update any of it.
      There's definitely options, but the only one that's as plug-and-play as Tamiya is GT Power. IT'S only advantage is Lipo compatibility.

      Since I built my Grand Hauler, I found an Evilbay Supplier that specializes in small Metric Hex Hardware.
      A bag of 100 8x6mm Hex Screws, $9.00!!!

    I just custom built a flat deck myself. I used the Tamiya kit for a template as well as the wheels etc. The frame, side rails and deck were built from aluminum I ordered in. The kit is metric, the closest standard size for the angles was 5/8" (very hard to find) and 1 1/2" x 3/4" for the frame (both .063 thick). The 5/8 angle is just a hair larger and the 1 11/2 " angle is about 1/16" shorter than the stock frame. A jigsaw with a metal blade worked great for cutting out the frame after using the stock frame as a jig for holes etc. I thought it would take a long time but I had the trailer complete yesterday. I learned the shortcomings of the Tamiya trailer wiring kit with my last build (tanker). I also learned about the orange LEDs. They look great when turned off and are a perfect match for the amber plastic on the stock lights. But when you turn them on...Wow are they ever orange. I ended up ordering yellow 3mm LEDs that look way too yellow when off but look good turned on. The solution was I had some Testors amber turn signal paint. I put two coats of that over the yellow LEDs and they look great off or on. I don't have mine made to remotely turn on. They are just wired to a 6v NiMH battery velcroed to the bottom between the frame rails same way I built my tanker. I am still waiting on my order of basswood strips from Sig to surface my deck. I built it to be a scale 45' trailer. That was the standard back in my trucking days. They are still made today but 48' and 53' are more common. Shipping containers now come in a 45' high volume version so I may build one from scratch next winter for a project. I may also build some winches with straps and use some rectangular brass tubing cut up and some 1/4" side strips to build side rails along each side for anchoring straps and chains along the sides. I just uploaded a little quick and dirty video of it on my channel. Nice channel btw, subscribed.

      I have thought about trying to build a custom trailer, I have seen them done but that is a long term project for sure! Nice tip on the lights as well. I do notice that from an angle they look normal but looking directly at them they are pretty bright! I will have to go over and check out the video of it all. One of these day I will tackle a large custom build like that. I have been wanting to build another truck so it may happen sooner than I think LOL!!

      Yes! The wiring is the most tedious thing about them. Stock it is not bad but the second I decided to do extra stuff it became a lot more work! Thanks for the compliment and it took a lot of fiddling to get the trailer lights working and all cleaned up. Totally worth it in the end and it was super rewarding to see everything all lit up and working at the end!!! The next adventure with one should be a little easier. Thanks as always for stopping by and checking in!!!

    OMG, I'm so excited.!!! I have just unboxed my very first Tamiya kit 5 days ago. That was the Unimog 406 that the RC ELF have sent to me. Two days ago I also unboxed the Grand Hauler from the RC ELF.!! He sent me straight to you and now I see why. Awesome video my new Tamiya brother. I can't wait to see your 1st Hauler video. I will be sure to watch it before I get started on mine.

    • @AddamsPlayground

      The build is pretty straight forward, typical Tamiya except there is just a lot of it. It is pretty involved but goes together very well. Painting takes a good bit of time so go through the instructions and try and get all the parts you need to paint done at one time and don't rush that part!! It is a really fun truck to build and even more fun to drive around and just practice with it. Be very careful with handling it if you have a trailer attached or driving up and down hilly areas with the trailer attached. The fenders sit very close to the trailer and I scratched mine messing with it. So just try and not man handle it with the trailer attached and be careful creating over a hill to make sure it doesn't contact the fenders. Congrats on the awesome truck and you are going to have a ton of fun with it!!!!

    Great build. I too watch Hobby Concepts to get the wireless trailer hookup. I redid all my trailers and trucks to one channel on my Spektrum radio. I'm buildinga new King Hauler Black Edition with the tanker trailer. I'm using the black box light controller off ebay. The taillights glow then bright when brakes are applied. On the reefer it allowed to do two brake lights and turn signals. I would like to have running lights but don't really want to drill holes to add them. I got to build the Grand Hauler with a new box trailer as well. My Knight Hauler has the full MFC. I'm not doing sounds and stuff in the new trucks. I'm just using the black box light kit and leds bought off amazon. It'll be cool. I'm using a Hobby Wing 1080 esc set to where there is no motor noise too. Driver figure will be installed and will be awesome. I like those full fenders on the Grand Hauler but you did mentioned they hit with the motorized legs.

    • @AddamsPlayground
      @AddamsPlayground  2 роки тому

      You are getting a whole fleet over there! I do want to build another one, they are a lot of fun to build and finish! Yeah, the motorized leg kit hangs a little lower in spots and has a couple screws that stick out slightly. Just enough that I did scratch the fender. I have heard you can place some spacers under the coupler on the truck to raise it slightly to help . I have not done it yet but I will try it. In my next truck I want to run one of the Beier sound and light kits in it. Totally programmable that will help the truck as it will be a custom one! Thanks for stopping by and checking in, I appreciate it!!

      Yeah this took way more paint than I expected it to! The wireless lights were kind of a pain but the factory trailer light setup will only power the lights in the kit. In hind sight I probably would just have the trailer lit up statically and not worry about all the turn signals working and all that but it is cool it all works together, just a lot more effort. These are extremely fun kits to assemble and get going and so much fun to just play around with! It is the biggest showpiece in my collection and I love looking at it. Have fun with yours!

    Sweet Rig! The flatbed trailer appears to be short in length and not scale. I think it should be a few inches longer to be scale.

    • @AddamsPlayground
      @AddamsPlayground  2 роки тому

      Yeah, one of the biggest issues with the Tamiya one is it is shorter. Doesn't look as scale but to be honest it saves some space for storage and once you are driving it it really doesn't matter. It is just fun and too cool looking to notice it is a little short! Fantastic job my friend. Looks good, not a fan of the chains, but you made them look good. Love seeing custom work to these. I'm currently building two, gonna be a set of trains. Not a fan of when the truck is turning right and left the signals on the trailer come on, just wouldn't see that in real life. Anyway great job, truck looks good too. Yeah I can see that looking good. These kind of look like little lenses down the side. It is not scale accurate but I love seeing it all lit up.
