  • Tamiya Flatbed Trailer Kit TAM56502 - Build Tips and Customization and Problems
    As a final piece to the awesome Grand Hauler build I completed recently, I was gifted a trailer kit to go with it. Once again, the RC Elf is working his magic! I purchased the leg kit and the light kit to go with the trailer and I am customizing the trailer to match the truck. I had to take my time due to all the painting required and the various steps involved but I wanted to share the project with you. I ran into some issues, mostly my fault for not going with my gut first and doing the wireless light… more on that in the video!
    Thanks again to the RC Elf and let get into the video!

      The side marker lights take some time but do make it look better. I wish I had ended it with the red light at the rear as I see many trailer have the red light at the rear of the sides. It still looks cool tootling around out in the garage "picking up deliveries"!

    Lots of work, which the trailer doesn't look like, when you see the kit. But until now you've done a great job.👏👏👏

      If you were to build it just as the kit comes honestly wouldn't take too long. Adding all the lights and automatic legs AND all the paint and decals it took a lot longer but well worth it!

      It is hopefully smooth sailing after the lights! Really not too much left to put together on the truck. I'll have a list of tips in the next video I figured out along the way too.

    Wow Adam your playground is for real. That is a pretty cool flatbed trailer kit. I feel you on the excess. I would imagine there is a lot of that. I always kick myself when I don't get enough of something.

    There's so much to think about with the wiring and the motorised legs.
    The lights down the sides will look great at night, will be awesome when it's done!
    I have a King Hauler and trailer I still need to build, your videos have really made me think about what I need before I even start. Good stuff, Addam!
    Thumb up from me mate, I think the other two clicked the wrong thumb. 😂 👍

      Thanks Mick, I wished the video could have been happier but I goofed and didn't do enough homework so I wanted to show it doesn't always go to plan. If everything always went perfectly everyone would have a pile of perfectly running RCs and a successful UA-cam channel about them!! But in all seriousness I wanted to put it out there that mistakes get made, errors in judgement and rash decisions sometimes lead to dead ends. Nobody is perfect and I am far from it so I am going to release some from time to time where I am disappointed or regretting something. I appreciate your kind words and not everyone is going to love the content but I'm glad you liked it, cheers!

    I fought with that too... I'm likely also chucking the nearly $50 Trailer Lighting Kit, and going wireless. It's a waste, but the best solution.
    I'm also using the Beier System instead of the MFC-01.... and THAT has its own ton of problems!

    • @AddamsPlayground
      @AddamsPlayground  2 роки тому +1

      I have only few videos of those Beier systems, they seem really cool once it is all wired and programed. That part seems to be tedious though. Those Tamiya trailer light kits were probably great when they first came out but really lack a lot in today's times. Best of luck to you, I wish I could help but you are in territory I have yet to venture into! Thanks for stopping by and checking it out!

    • @CarminesRCTipsandTricks
      @CarminesRCTipsandTricks 2 роки тому

      Addam, the Beier System is NOT EASY!! It's a challenge, I can't lie... but the results are nothing short of amazing!
      I had a BIG burst of money last year, and I bought FIVE 1/14th Scale Semi Trucks and 3 Trailers. One Truck is a Box Van, another is the $1100 8X4 Tipper Truck and Actuator!! (Can't WAIT to start building THAT!)
      Because of that, I really didn't want all 5 to sound like the same Truck....
      At First, I was sold the Beier USM-RC-2 from our only U.S. supplier... it was a royal PITA!!! 🤬😡🤬 Wouldn't ever work right, only TWO open channels, and the Wiring was a NIGHTMARE!
      Then... I contacted the Beier Forum and spoke with people at the Company.
      Turns out that I was sold a Defunct Product that was OBSOLETE soon after I bought them!!! 😡
      Beier Customer Support is SO great, that they took my 4 Beier Units, and REPLACED them with 3 of the brand new USM-RC-3!! Plus a thorough explanation of how to make them Work.
      They didn't have to do that. 8 month old USED Electronics? That's Service.
      The USM Series is not the ESC equipped version. The USM-RC-3 has ALL the features of the SFR-01 that Bob favors, just no ESC built in. It's also $120 LESS - or $200 less than the MFC!!
      Also, I can choose from 42 different Diesel Engines, 14 Horns, and over 100 LED lighting functions!!
      Plus Cab/CB Chatter, Air Brakes, Brake Squeal, Music, Burps, Farts and many others!
      Once figured out, EASILY programmed from my Laptop.
      ..... I'm just conceding that the Trailer Wiring Kit was a waste. It's literally 1993 technology!
      I don't have Motorized Trailer Legs yet. Probably not getting Tamiya for that either. Too many parts I'll never use. I'm looking into GOOD Generics, they do exist, somewhere!

    I’m going to be building the same trailer in the near future. I’m on the fence about going with the wireless setup. Thinking I’ll use the tamiya trailer kit so down the road I have the hookup on the truck for other trailers.

    • @AddamsPlayground
      @AddamsPlayground  2 роки тому +1

      If you are doing the electronic leg kit then I would go wireless. If you are staying with the manual legs then wired would be fine. It is just kind of strange to have the controlled legs and be able to pull up and drive off or drop off the trailer from the remote but still have to go plug in or unplug the trailer. But, with that said if you plan on sharing it with other trucks then wired may end up.being the better option. Just know adding extra lights to that kit will effect the other lights due to the additional current draw. Thanks for watching and best of luck on your build

    You could of used 6v pre wired LEDs for the side running lights and used the original wire harness

    • @AddamsPlayground
      @AddamsPlayground  Рік тому

      Possibly, there would have to be some electro-mathmaticals done to figure it out! It seemed light the harness is getting just enough power to light up what it has on it stock. It was a head scratcher to get it all working the way it is but it works so that was all that mattered.at.the time! It was getting me frustrated there at the end fighting with it!!

    People don't understand how hard it is to add lights to a vehicle especially if it's not supposed to have them with all the wiring, power source and mounting All of my RCs have headlights so I can see where it's at at night and if possible tail lights

  • @FastFreddyRC
    @FastFreddyRC 2 роки тому +1

    I have to say that when you want to add lights, motorized legs etc. you definitely don’t have much guidance in the manuals. They are all very separate instructions which means you are left figuring it all out yourself. I had the same issue with the flatbed and was surprised that installing the lights wasn’t as clean as I expected using their instructions.

    • @AddamsPlayground
      @AddamsPlayground  2 роки тому +1

      Yeah and add doing custom stuff on top of that and there is a good deal of head scratching. I enjoy it, the trying to figure stuff out but there does get to a point where it stops being fun and challenging and turns into a frustrating pain! thankfully it didn't cross into that but anytime you are dealing with electronics and wiring it seems to be a fine line! thanks for stopping by and checking in!

      @@AddamsPlayground Agreed! Do you have the MFC-01 on your Grand Hauler? I'm still trying to figure that all out. Had this great idea for a video but I ran into one problem after the other. I want a flatbed for my Grand Hauler but they are to short for my liking and I don’t want to buy one for that reason, it almost looks like you need to take 2 and graft them together for a scale 52 footer, not out of the question I guess

    • @AddamsPlayground
      @AddamsPlayground  Рік тому

      Yeah they are short, they look a bit better with the globe liner as it is a much shorter truck. I wanted this just to be able to put different loads on and change it up. I looked at some of the lesu and RC4WD trailers but they were just so expensive. I really love the RC4WD low boy trailer but it is not cheap and I know myself and that would lead to 2 or more pieces of construction equipment and then that all goes down a very expensive road quickly!!!

    Nice job pal, watched the whole video, I've built a few of these trailers. Check out my take on my flatbed, I made custom straps as well that work really well. I've sold hundreds to folks, they're quite popular. Anyway i'm not a fan of that Tamiya light kit for all those reasons. Not really crazy about brake lights, the turn signals I think isn't very realistic when every time you steer the the truck the signals go on. Thats too much signalling lol. Is there reverse lights as well? That would be strange, don't think I've ever seen a flatbed trailer have reverse lights. Lastly, I have mine attached to my Globeliner which is much shorter than your truck and it still looks too short a trailer, it scales out in 1/14 to 32 foot trailer which is not very long or realistic, your truck is longer than mine and almost the same length of the trailer. Those details kinda pick my ass, they're nice trailers, but would have been nice if Tamiya made them longer. To remedy this, I have two of these trailers ready to be built, I'm gonna attach them together, lie a set of trains. That'll help make the proportions seem more realistic I think. Anyway sorry for the long comment, but just wanted to share my bits. I like the extra holes you drilled out, the extra marker lights will look good. Don't know about that self etching primer adhering, nothing bonds to aluminum, at least not that well. One rub against a sharp rick and it's goodnight Charlie. Look forward to seeing how it turns out. 👍

      Thanks for all the info, I'm a noob to the big truck world for sure. I've drooled over pics of them for years but never actually seen on up close so to me it is still gigantic!!! Some how in setting up the radio and endpoints I got it to where you have to turn pretty hard for the turn signals to come on. Dumb luck completely! I am not a fan of them coming on for every turn either but the way it is now is a good compromise. I just hope I don't have to alter anything and ruin those settings! I appreciate all the tips and tricks as well as any other feedback, it all helps!!! Thanks for stopping by and checking it out!!!!
