- Simple solenoid kicking mechanism for your robotic/automation project.
Circuit diagram: goo.gl/7zy8vR.
If you want to activate the kicker using wireless RF remote relay module, then use this circuit: goo.gl/CFRWC2. It is combined with a micro switch for local activation feature and the best part is, both of the relay and switch are working together to cut the supply from ZVS capacitor charging module to prevent back current when either one is pressed/triggered. When both are idle, they will make sure the loop to the capacitor is always established to ensure the solenoid activation is always ready.

Thankyou , I was looking for a solenoid to make a door lock releasing set-up and I was doubted about its power. I think this video is enough to understand. Thankyou once again
You are welcome :)
Hi this is really interesting. Thanks for this demo. Do you think this could be used to trigger a motorcycle shift lever? And could you provide the link to the solenoid used here?
Nice work! It is very helpful
Thankyou. Can we use a capacitor of lower rating? Appreciate it :)
Hi there, thanks for the video! I am trying to fit this entire assembly into a smaller project, powered with a LiPo battery. Do you have any tips on how to achieve the same (or similar) power? Thank you
Hello. Could you?
@@kaptanmike1957 It's complicated. If you don't mind a massive temperature spike after each "shot" then yeah, quite achievable. Making it work for your use case is the hard part.
@@aCloudOfHaze I plan to use it in oceans. to launch a small torpedo. Do you have any suggestions? Can I use a smaller, lighter battery?
I am confused how come your circuit diagrams don't include the car relay? Please can you show a diagram with the relay
hi nudge, with that system how many kicks can it do per minute aaprox?
Hey mate, your videos have been very helpful so thank you very much. I have a question though: would the kicker kick harder when I use a supercapacitor of 2.7V and 500F?
Hello, thank you buddy. For the question, the answer is most probably no. Because using that supercapacitor, the maximum voltage that it can contain is only 2.7V even we charge it using 390V capacitor charger. Large capacity alone will not help to push the kicker. For example I once have tried to drive the kicker using low voltage like 20V but with 2 units of 3300uF (giving it 6600uF), the result is the kicker kicked softly. I also have tried the other way, using 390V but with a small capacity like 100uF, the result is the same, the kicker kicked very softly. So for the conclusion, you need a high value of voltage together with a large value of capacity to make the kicker kick hard.
@@nudgeme4844 Thanks man for your fast and clear explanation! In some other comment you left on a similar question, you suggested using 2 parallel capacitors to boost the kicker, is it then still possible to charge it with the same capacitor-charger?
Yes, that's what I did in the video above. I used a single ZVS capacitor charger to charge the capacitors that were connected parallel to each other, and triggered them using just one limit switch.
Sorry, not in the video above, but that's what normally I do.
@@nudgeme4844 Thanks man, you're a hero!
Nice project, man! Congratulations! One question: I used to power solenoids directly with a DC charger. I triggered it from the microcontroller using a transistor. My intetion is building something like an inpact piston, but I want to be able to finely tune the speed/impact force, perhaps incorporate a control system to automatically do this.
But I never really quite understood how to control the strength/speed of the solenoid in this setup with a DC charger. I thought I was restrained to use the voltage specified on the solenoid (usually either 12V or 24V on those I bought from AliExpress), so I tried changing the charger amperage, but with very little effect on the speed/impact force. By watching your video, perhaps there is something I am missing in this problem.
What is the importance of the capacitor in this circuit? Is it because we can activate the solenoid with a higher voltage burst? Do you have any ideas what component I could use to control the speed/impact force of the solenoid?
Arduino micro controller make a circuit that has different resistors on it with buttons or a slider to control speed and maybe separate one for power
can you make a solenoid with the wire wrapped around a metal tube? Mine doesnt pull in the rod for my pulse motor. The iron rod seems to stick to the sides of the metal tube instead of being pulled all the way in.
Does anyone know what other capacitors can be used for this project that more easily available in the US?
is the kicker only working from the 12v-----if so can you tell me where to buy this 12v kicker
can you make it kick less with lesser voltage?
Can You make this for trigger hammer for air gun?
hang on... what voltage did you dump into the 12v solenoid again?
Hi, can I do this using AC Solenoids?
Love it I love it. Just what I was looking for. You must be pushing the boundaries by going as high as 400 Volts on a 12 Volt Solenoid. That is more than thirty times more than designed for! BUT I love how powerful it is👿. Yea.
Working principle of a coil gun. But I thing the relais is burned out quite fast. The solenoid is also not build for this kind of hammering force and will eventually destroy itself.
The coil is not powered for a long time so should be able to handle The higher current.
So yes its possible. But not a good idea.
Did you make or buy that solenoid? If so do you have specifications or a link to buy?
Hi, for the specific model of the solenoid shown in the video, you can find it here: goo.gl/AH6izP.
Thanks!
Nice. Question this solénoïde is comercial or made for this project?
Hi, the solenoid is commercial, and can be found here: www.banggood.com/DC-12V-35mm-Long-Stroke-Push-Pull-Solenoid-Small-Electromagnetic-Electric-Magnet-p-1217063.html?rmmds=search

i like, how much would be the energy consumption of a solenoid in ampere and volt
In ampere I am not sure but for the volatge, it was 390V!
Is it possible that our solenoid didn't work well caused by the bad coil? If it's possible,Will you suggest me the best coil or the best way to make the best coil for solenoid?
Try this: goo.gl/4RFPQB

If the 12v solenoid is used, can it be powered directly from 24v battery(without capacitor) and have similar results?
No, battery has a high resistance than capacitor, also capacitor send high voltage in very short time

Hi, just connect between the solenoid and the Arduino with a relay. Circuit: goo.gl/CFRWC2
new hit man weapon
Is there a way you can control how hard the solenoid kicks?
Use solenoid with thicker and more coil winding, or use higher voltage or use higher capacitance (connect capacitors in parallel to each other).
Hi... What type of relay can be used? Please provide me the part name.. I used SRD-05DC type relay but it was blown off... The solenoid coil resistance is 2ohms and the voltage is 300V.. the relay is not supported 150A inrush current for 5msec...
Hi, try to use the car relay with the amp rating of 30A
Nếu không có tụ mà tôi đấu nối trực tiếp đến mạch thì có gây cháy không?
I can see this working for a short time but surly the coil on the solenoid would burn out very quickly, how long did the solenoid survive? 🤔
As long as you guard the solenoid chassis with proper bracket, it will survive the impact damage for a long time. I have used the bigger solenoid coil and plunger, with higher capacitor capacity, it was able to kick normal soccer ball pretty forceful, and the solenoid chassis fell apart several times. After I reinforced the chassis by welding additional brackets, it turned out to be stronger in construction. The coil itself didn't experience any burn out however. It is because the current supplied is kind of low despite the large voltage used in the circuit.
@nudgeme4844 I see very interesting, so even though the coil is rated at 12v the current is not increasing by much and because its such a short burst it doesn't appear to adversely affect the coil. I might give it a go! Thankyou!
where did you get the capacitor ?
Hi, you can find it on AliExpress.com. Here is the example where I bought mine:

@@nudgeme4844 Well i built the circuit with the same parts as yours, and same wiring, it worked perfect once, It blew the 10 Amp fuse in the booster circuit,- Would you have any guesses on why ?
You can not get same performance with micro controller cause relays can only do 250volt...yes?
No, that's not right. I have triggered the relay (you need to use car relay as shown in the video for this one) using Arduino and it worked like charm. But to be safe for the microcontoller, the use of RC snubber module is recommended.
@@nudgeme4844 i can not get it to work. Do you have a circuit layout using a micro controller and car relay please? I'll pay you for it...
You need a dc capacitor

@@eduardosantos-to6gz if u just wanna lift a short distance, no need that big solenoid and capacitor as in this video, just use regular solenoid and feed 12v should be enough
Wow-what does the strength depends on. ??
It depends on 2 main things, first the level of voltage (here I used 390V), and second the value of capacitance (I normally use a pair of 3000uF capacitors parallely connected to each other if I use larger solenoid kicker).

Hey I need ur help!!
Yes? Whats up?
Terima kasih.
@@nudgeme4844 Terima kasih Mas. Saya akan langsung Coba
@@nudgeme4844 Jadi harus sampek 390 V ya yg diset Mas? Gak boleh 100 V?
