Penang is pretty much Singapore Lite. Matter of fact, the British thought they hit a jackpot with Penang as a port to control regional sea trade in late 1700s, before Singapore became available as a colony in early 1800s.

I didn't realize you hadn't been to Georgetown before. It is a great city, like a cheaper, less weird and less antiseptic Singapore. Incidentally, it is the only place where, in WW2, the Germans and Japanese served side by side. Once the Malay Peninsula fell to the Japanese, German U-boats operated from there against Allied shipping.

Hi Gabriel, this is an interesting city there's such a fusion of diverse cultures and a heavy influence of the English empire still naming it Georgetown a name given in many places in the Caribbean like the Cayman Islands, Guyana, and the Bahamas. Where the Roman empire's influence is still felt throughout most of Europe the English Empire had a vastly greater reach extending out from the Americas and Southeast Asia an underrated expansion. The mansion you step in was incredible I notice they had an incredible collection of Porcelain, but I didn't see any Jade which is often seen in Chinese culture placed elsewhere to protect from thieves I'm guessing. Much Jade and Turquoise can be seen in the craftsman of the Southwest U.S. where Navajo tribes use in conjunction with silver pieces all very exquisite.

The Chew jetty went commercial a couple of years before the pandemic. Many of the homes are now let as tourist shops. The other jetties have remained traditional but how long they remain with limited sewerage and other services is questionable. The new generation like a little more comfort I think.
The "boat" you saw was one of the vehicle ferries that ran between Georgetown and Butterworth. Unfortunately other than for motor bikes these stopped running a couple of years ago. They had been losing money for years and now there is also a second bridge.
Penang is around 60% ethnic Chinese so beer is everywhere. The reference to Muslim Chinese is unusual but what it is meaning is that the premises are pork free and therefore suitable for Muslims.
Good to see a few tourists back as Penang was very heavily hit by the absence of tourists during the pandemic

@@johnschannel449 I've noticed that, since his 50th birthday last year, Gabe tends to visit new places only briefly, and you only see him exploring in depth the places that he already knows that he likes, like Greece, India, and Thailand. That's fair enough, I suppose, as he's earned the right to do as he likes, but I miss some of the energy and risk that he used to bring to the endeavor.
