Fascinating. Roy Gandy and Rega have been been lifelong mentors of mine in a sense but I'd only read about him and I was hesitant to watch this interview because it might spoil my mental image - but having watched this series now I feel like my impressions were spot on, and in fact I feel like I've known him for years and that he's indirectly been influencing me in many ways this whole time.
It takes a long time to understand that, it's not authority that is the problem, it's uninlightened authority that IS the problem. Inlightened authority basically means compitance, (which so many people are not). Never heard of the maker of Rega's untill now, and I have to admit, I am very impressed with Roy Gandy. But I'm guessing that all state of the art makers and creators, weather it's cars, computers, planes or indeed turntables, have a great inventor/engineer character who is the spark that kick-start's the whole thing. These people will always be fascinating and an insperation to us all. God bless to Roy Gandy. I'm buying a P8 soon. IN WHITE cos it looks soooo cooool.
Roy's story of fixing his father and mother's bikes reminds me of my own. When I was about six, during a school break from primary school, my brother Peter and I decided that we had to fix our mother's bicycle that had been built for her during the war from components lying around. The part we decided to fix was the rear hub Sturmey-Archer 3 speed gearbox. It was great fun, and we learned a lot, until that was, she turned back up from her chat with a friend further up the street and found us with all the parts busy cleaning them up - the words you better finish it before your father gets home had never sounded so loud or more of a threat..... but by the time he did we had and it worked perfectly.
I’ve been a keen HiFi owner for the last 55 years and had 20 plus record decks over that time. I heard of Rega more recently but thought they were an Eastern European brand and a bit basic in build. In the last few months I have found out all about Rega and I’m converted enough to buy a Planar 8 as an experimental stab at what makes them special. I’m a big MM cartridge fan, rather than MC which might sound better, because it is more robust and far more generic for everyday use.
Love Rega because of roy, but never listened or owned any of their equipment. Have thought about the Aethos amp. I have a sugden and Naim, plus a Cyrus at the moment, but i may give one an audition.
Thanks for that Ernie. Hope to have it ready this week, something else has come up with time pressure to have ready so it slipped a bit, sorry about that but do subscribe to get notice when new videos become live.
Hello MICHAEL I just bought the Rega IO to use while I wait for the DecWare Rachel Zen triode 34I.6 integrated amp. I'm trying to set up a new vinyl system on a fixed budget, I can afford 1 Heresy III for now, and intend to be able to get a 2nd by the time the Decware Rachel is ready. Until then can I run the I/O with just one Klipsch horn speaker in mono? Is there a way to do this properly? Rega doesn't have a customer contact and refers us to dealers and distributors. I haven't been able to get a definitive answer to this technical question perhaps you can ask Mr. Gandy or one of his associates if you have a chance. That would be lovely. Beautiful set of interviews Warm Regards Bicycle Joe
Hello, dear boy, I hadn't realised that you have your own youtube channel, how intriguing, I shall have to have a look through your videos. How are you? Well, I hope ...
Interesting one, Rega have made some really great dacs over the years. These days many devices only have digital outputs, I'm thinking tvs, and entry level streamers can have very poor dacs in them so I'm actually keen on the idea. I think of it as more connectivity so it could be right for more people. It also means that a hifi company doesn't need to be an expert in wifi!!
@@michaelmcclean5169 Including inputs such as DACs not only raises costs, but also has the potential for affecting analogue performance. Most people I know who are into hi-fi usually have a standalone DAC. I don't know. I've always viewed Rega for being a minimalist company that makes great analog products. As for their digital stuff, I never heard their CD players or DACs. I heard their DAC-R was very good and well rated but for some reason it's been discontinued. I can see the utility in having an onboard DAC for some people, but personally, I prefer to invest in a better standalone DAC that I can replace with the change of technology and sticking to 100% analog integrated amps at lower costs. I was considering upgrading to the Elicit-R but because of the change in technology and the added DAC, it is now much more expensive. I would pay for a DAC I do not need.
@@thebestoffools Not really my findings as the highest performance systems are moving away from stand alone dacs and sales are down dramatically over the past 5 years. I'm sure the drop in demand will be a contributing factor to Rega moving away from stand alone dacs. Cheap dacs with headphone amps are still popular but I view that as a separate area. Streamers perform better with the dac as an integral part where the dac is in control of the buffering so there is little or no market for adding dacs as it is almost always worse. All depends on the level if gear of course but that is 95% true. Also I see no performance downside to have a dac in there, I guess the proof is a listen and compare an Elicit Mk5's analogue circuits to other amps like Naims. Probably not important for a while yet, just enjoy your Elex-r !
@@michaelmcclean5169 Thank you for your reply and insight, Michael. I will most certainly look into the Elicit-R. My dealer here in Canada doesn't hold the MK5 at the moment. I actually was the one who informed him there was a new model out last time I visited. I guess it's still too recent? It will be interesting to compare the MK5 to the previous model and even to the Elex-R since the new model takes most of its technology from the Aethos.

Fantastic interview Michael Roy is a legend who has given a lot to the world of music 🎶
Fantastic, one of the true gentlemen and pioneers of the UK Hi-fi industry! (Roy, not you Michael 🤣)
It was really inspiring. Thanks Michael.

What is all that noise? I’m surprised Roy never picked it up.
Great interview, when is the next installment?

He looks so like Charlie Watts… great interview lovely man.
Roy has such a nice vibe really
Could easily be designing formula one race cars…
Hi Michael, do you stock Harbeths?
Man looks like Geoff Hinton.
Hats off to Roy Gandy! He's stayed loyal to the U.K! Not like the greedy James Dyson who abandoned the U.K out of pure greed!!
Is he Indian or Ceylonian?
I love my Rega Elex-R. Please don't put DACs in them. Keep the circuits simple like Naim does. 🙏❤
