Stéphane Mottoul is one of Europe's leading young concert organists. A graduate from the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Stuttgart and the Conservatoire National supérieur de musique et de danse in Paris, Stéphane studied alongside teachers including Ludger Lohmann (organ), Pierre Pincemaille, Thierry Escaisch and Lazlo Fassang (organ improvisation), as well as Jean-François Zygel, and Yves Henry (harmony, counterpoint, fugue). Subsequently, Stéphane earned a Master's degree in church music at the Musikhochschule in Freiburg-im-Breisgau (Germany).
Known for his imaginative choice of registrations and use of the organ (Music Web International, 2018) he has received numerous prizes in different organ competitions, including the Dudelange International Organ Competition where he was awarded both First Prize and Public Prize in organ improvisation and Third Prize in organ interpretation. Stéphane was also awarded the belgian noteworthy Hubert Schoonbroodt Prize for excellence in organ playing.
As a soloist, Stéphane Mottoul performs regularly throughout Europe and North America. Significant venues include Brussels Cathedral, the Centre for Fine Arts in Brussels, Symphony House in Liège and the Notre-Dame Basilica in Montreal (Canada).
Stéphane's wide and eclectic repertoire covers a large period, from Early Baroque to the 21st Century. Stéphane is also regarded as an accomplished improvisator, focusing on various improvisation styles - baroque, romantic, and modern. He also has perfected the art of accompanying a silent film through improvisation over the years. Notable films include 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame and 'The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari'.
His debut recording 'Maurice Duruflé: Complete organ works' (Aeolus, 2018), has received high praise worldwide.
Stéphane served as Organist at the Universitätskirche in Freiburg-im-Breisgau (Germany). He was recently appointed Organist at the Hofkirche St. Leodegar in Lucerne (Switzerland) where he is expected to take office as of October 1 2021. He played in 2022-2023 the whole Bach's organ works in 14 concerts on the main Hoforgan of the church.
