I have four wheeled to Chiva Falls numerous times. Broke an axle on two separate occasions in my forerunner. My Land Cruiser went the entire way, and we took the road before Chiva Falls that goes right and uphill to the top of Chiva Falls. None of my trucks were ever tricked out just stock, And I never had a spotter but myself. Both my young daughters were always with me. Sometimes they had to get out and walk because they were afraid!. Now, I have a Tacoma TRD 4 x 4 sport, but it’s new and nice and I am older and I don’t know if I’m willing to start damaging my truck. Now we ride four strokes. It’s a lotta good fun! Great video!
You made that look easy! I was brought there years ago, probably around 2015-2016, on my first ever offroad trip in my 03 jeep TJ 5 speed. Rough day but had an amazing time, had a cookout by the waterfall too. Awesome video!
You are correct, 3 feathers has 3 main routes, left (the crack), center (easiest) and right (very difficult). This is a great trail that I run about 10 times a year.
I think Charouleau Gap is more challenging in my opinion because there's just more of everything. It's a longer trail with more challenges. And It changes every year. I like both trails.
We do an annual New Year's Day run out there and combine Chiva Falls with the lower loop to make an 8hr trail ride with some deep water crossings included for extra fun. I guess now that you are running your solid front axle this trail won't be as intimidating - except for the off camber stuff. Let us know when you are back in the area so that you won't have to do it alone.
The major rock obstacle is named after Three Feathers Tank which is ~100 yards away. Three Feathers Tank is named after Three Feathers Whiskey. All the cattle tanks in this area of Redington Pass are named after alcoholic beverages.
I’ve owned numerous Jeep’s...Cherokee’s and Wranglers. I currently own a 2021 2DR RUBICON. I’m impressed with your rig...the rear suspension travel is amazing!
Awesome video! Some friends and I are going there tomorrow I haven't been there since the late 70's. Back then there was no such thing as 3 feathers only one way down was the V notch emphatically known as the Chute or the Crack. I remember an alternate way in and out shown later in your video referred to as the station wagon route. We are looking forward to tomorrow, bringing the drone also for video shots and scouting purposes. Happy trails!
Good video. I go to the Tucson area quite a bit from Oregon. My 2 gen stock Sequoia would never make it past where the van stopped. I was surprised that you went where you did alone. You did a good job making it and filming.
Hey Ken thanks for posting! It’s Michael here, I just subscribed to your channel the other day. I mentioned I was looking to get a FJ, well I just bought a 08 manual 6 speed today 👍 It’s not 100% cherry but I’m okay with that because I’m planning on getting out on some dirt tracks with it 👍 It always been a northwest vehicle so no rust. It’s got a lift, aftermarket front bumper, winch, good tires, clean title and 180k so it’s not a spring chicken 😂 but it runs great. I have a few things I need to fix but I picked it up for 10k so it was one of the cheapest FJs I have seen out west other then ones with rebuilt titles. Take care 🙂
@@mcelroychandler6267 Right on 👍 I really have been enjoying my new FJ so far, I ordered a new TRD cat back exhaust, because I knew it needs some exhaust work, I also ordered all the basics for a good tuneup, once I get all that done, I’m thinking about a Smittybilt rear bumper to match the front and possibly ARB skid plates? Take care 🙂
Crazy how extreme trails and vehicles have become. I remember last century when we ran Pritchett Canyon in Moab with Detroit locked Currie 9" axles and 33" BFG and we were the most built rig on the trail...
It would be nice to see GPS coordinates of trail heads and such added to your videos. Also some supporting text descriptions too. I like your videos, keep them coming. Thanks.
Good call! I've made the mistake of being the only vehicle and taking on a challenging obstacle close to dusk, more than once... Each time I regretted it, but fortunately was ultimately able to get out without rescue or use of the Garmin Explore+ (a must if you wheel alone in remote areas without cell coverage). Great video! Thank you!
Another great video. Thank you Sir! Thanks for calling it quits when you did. Maybe if you have one camera outside and the dash camera on a split screen you'd capture the steepness of the hills more?
I've done that trail to the falls dozens of times with my 97 4Runner and yes, the rear locker was needed. I wish I could send you some pictures of the falls when there's lots of water going over. I have lots of pics of the area flooded out
Thank you. Yes I've always trailered the FJ when traveling long distances. I was on the dobinsons extended travel 3 inch lift and Milestar Patagonia 315/75/16 tires.
I wanna mention how incredibly stable the camera stays. While on this trail. You see your hood bouncing all over. But that doesn’t seem to transfer to the camera. That’s awesome.
Hi Ken, I’m sorry but the FJ didn’t quite heal itself. I can still hear the squeaking when you drive by the cameras. But it is a lot quieter. Thanks for the newest video. I so enjoy watching.
I've done this one several times over the years. The junction he's talking about you can take a side road off of it and come out above the fall. Coming back from the side road going further there are a couple loops you can make that are also a lot or fun.
I admire your willingness to tackle those tricky road conditions. I have a Red unmodified 2012 Fj, not sure if would do what you did. Slowly learning how to use it on back roads in the south eastern Az counties
I love trails like that one. Good size obstacles with good grip. My wife and I are heading for King of the Hammers this weekend. I like the pre running weekend not the actual race day. Not so crazy. Anyway we're lucky we have access to a cabin about 2 miles west of the race area. Good fun coming up. I guess you have no plans to attend the event?
Hey Ken I think you are one wise chicken making sound decisions when alone, good one! I was thinking by now you must have power legs from all the hiking you do for camera setups and retrieval sure appreciate that effort! So if you were there with your 42” upgrades would you have taken on that last segment? As always great stuff, thank you!
Ken, since you have long travel suspension, have extended your brake lines? May be a dumb question but I am wondering. Thanks for the awesome wheeling vids!
The wide angle of the GoPro does not show how tall or steep anything is. It's unfortunate. We do go down to the bottom of the hill you parked at. Sometimes we drive in about 50 yards further than that.
I have it set to narrow, it's just hard to capture. Everyone has trouble showing steepness, everything always looks bigger in real life than it does in any camera.

Glad I got that right! 😄 It's a great trail!
Better to be Prudent than Foolishly Courageous..... Well Done.
Yeah this was pretty remote, it was getting late, and those obstacles got pretty crazy! I think I made the smart choice...
Great video. Looks rougher than a CHARLO gap Catilina .

I don't keep the trails I'm on a secret, but I guess I could provide coordinates. Thank you!
Film definitely doesn’t do justice to the difficulty and steepness of “3 Feathers”! Thanks for allowing me to relive one of my favorite trails!
Very true. Showing elevation changes is very difficult!
Can't hate the sun and the blue sky!
At that moment, I did hate the sun! 😆

That’s a fun trail. There’s snow out there today and the falls I’m sure are running. It’s fun during monsoon season as well! Nice video!
I thought it came out early. I figured your phone was at fault. I just happened to be up late and saw it was out. Feeling special!!
Yeah I was surprised at how many people watched it between midnight and 6am 😄
Did the route in 1974 in a gmc pick up did not have to use 4 wheel drive then with no tire spin.
I could be wrong but I believe it's chivo
I don't think anyone knows for sure... 😄 I've seen both on maps. Thanks for watching!
Seems like you're hauling the FJ in this video. What kind of lift set up and tires are you using at this point? Looks perfect!

Great vid of this trail. Helped me decide not to do it solo.
Yeah... It's not an ideal solo trail.
Terrific content man! Setting up all those shots yourself, in and out of the truck, running solo.

Lots of great trails down there! Have fun!
Hey Ken. Have you ever figured out how far you can lean before rolling? Off camber freaks me out.
I dislike off camber as well! I think up to about 30 degrees is ok. I wouldn't want to test it much further!

Yes I installed extended brake lines in the rear. Thanks for watching!
Nice navigating! Looks pretty steep on the video just so you know...
I also have a Ford van. But never take it off road. They get stuck in 2 inches of sand.
Did you modify the suspension?
Yes, I have a Dobinsons lift, about 3.5 inches, and reszfab rear links.
