Thank you so very much for creating this video and sharing all your practical recommendations on homeschooling resources. Your video is lovely in the way you explain and show each book! It is truly helpful! Thank you very much for explaining that it is 1 page per day! So the child is not overwhelmed. Many blessings to all!
Abeka's 3rd grade language arts is my absolute favorite. I'm iffy on the other years, they're okay, but for some reason I just adore third grade LA from Abeka. Hope she has a great year!
We just finished that level of BJU and all I could see was the Swedish chef from the muppets. It led to many voice impersonating and you tube breaks just to laugh.,;) great program though!
You definitely have me 👀 Abeka now! My little guy is finishing TGTB level 2 math and I am so focused on wanting him to practice all of his math facts. Hoping TGTB math 3 covers more multiplication.
We’ll be doing Teaching Textbooks online, with Abeka 3 as well for math. I’m excited for my kiddo to try out the combo of both. I like the idea of online and also book work for math skills.
Can’t wait to hear your thought on BJU Spelling 3. We use All About Spelling and will do levels 3 & 4 for next year (3rd grade), but we’re also using Evan Moor Building Spelling Skills 3 along with it. But it’s boring black and white. I was thinking of looking into BJU Spelling for the following year. We use BJU for Bible, English and Science. We use Math U See, Gamma next year. And Sonlight for History, Bible and Literature. 😊We’re on level C next year! 🎉
I’m going on my 3rd yr homeschooling, I still consider myself very much a newbie. Until I saw this video I have never, ever considered Abeka. I thoroughly enjoyed your brief flip-through, so now it’s on my radar lol
We are still using the old TGATB math. I had stocked up before they announced the new release. I very much appreciate the hint on how to supplement it. I too feel that there aren’t enough practice problems…
How is Abeka Language 3 compared to BJU English 3 when it comes to writing? We've been using abeka since day 1 and it's great especially in grammar area, but I feel it lacks writing. We're in 3rd grade now and thinking of switching to BJU. I'm still contemplating...
Are you using the teachers guide/lesson plan for the Bob jones spelling? Also, on my initial flip thru of it, I thought it looked like they introduced vocabulary words part way through the year. Did you find this to be true?
Have you done any math fact memorization with your 3rd grader? We're heading into Simply Math 3 also and thinking of supplementing with something, maybe Abeka 3? We're trying Vocabulary Cartoons for my son! Great video thank you!
I honestly haven’t done like formal math drills her. She seems to do fine with simple addition in her head, but I probably should add those! I haven’t heard of vocabulary cartoons! I’ll have to check it out 😊
We are somewhat new to homeschooling, we did it in 2020 and then kids when back to school this last year but we are wanting to try it long term now. My question is about abeka, we’ve never used it before, for the language arts, do you need the teachers materials? We’ve done Saxon phonics previously, and I love it because it tells me exactly what to do and say, but it ends at 2nd grade so I don’t know where to go for my 3rd grader.
Do you follow Abeka’s reading lessons plans and use the readers? I think I noticed that the Grammar workbook incorporates some of the reading from the readers. Are the readers necessary? I’m considering Abeka for my daughter’s 3rd grade Language Arts next year, but I have already purchased Sonlight readers.
No they aren’t necessary. My oldest didn’t like the readers so I didn’t make her read them. They aren’t used in the workbook. There are book reports and they suggest they be written about one of the readers, but I just let her choose a book she was reading and we did it that way.
I think it depends how math minded your kid is. We haven’t done the new math 3 yet, so it’s hard to say. It also depends if you want the Abeka supplement to review what they’ve already learned or be on track of or even a bit ahead of what they’re learning. I’m not sure that was even helpful. For mine, I probably would have done Abeka 3 but at a slow rate
You probably mentioned this and I think I know the answer, but wanted to double check. Are you having her go from TGTB level 2 into Abekas level 3? I have a 4th grader in level 2 TGTB that is struggling and Im interested in trying something diff. Was curious if going straight into level 3 abeka would be an ok transition!? Any insight would be awesome :)
Yes from level 2 TGTB to Abeka 3rd grade. I think it should be ok because TGTB 2 covers a lot of grammar concepts (more than Abeka 2nd grade). I obviously can’t say for sure how your daughter will enjoy Abeka since I don’t know her but if she wants more straightforward, to the point lessons, Abeka might be good to consider. It’s more traditional. If she likes more Charlotte Mason style, Abeka might not work for her. I have some 3rd grade LA videos on my Abeka playlist and you’ll get a much better idea if it will work for her from those!
Ohh I never thought about lefties, getting them unbound! Smart! Those spiral bound can be really annoying for left handed kiddos. Are you left handed too? ❤️❤️
@@thepracticalhomeschooler That's crazy!! Strong left handed genes! My husband is left handed and he was pretty disappointed none of the girls turned out left handed. Maybe this last baby....😆
You CAN complete the work without them (especially if you’re fairly good at grammar), but I think the lessons are helpful for review and teaching the concepts. I liked them for 3rd grade (not all the grades, but 3rd was good)
I include my children in picking their curriculum as well. It makes it easier to make a choice and to do the work. My daughter is very adamant about using Abeka for Arithmetic and Language Arts. She says she loves the challenge...lol!
Thank you for sharing your choices for your 3rd grader. I have a child also going into 3rd grade and this, along with your other videos, are so helpful. If I plan on using Abeka Language 3 and Abeka spelling 3 what teacher help books do I need? Thank you in advance I find their website so confusing.
I’m glad you find them helpful ☺️😄 I use the homeschool curriculum lesson plans for language arts. That will be for you to teach the lesson and then if you need the answer key, that’s separate. That’s the “language 3 teacher Key.” It looks exactly like the language book. I agree, it can be confusing!
@@thepracticalhomeschooler thank you so much for your advice. I really appreciate it! Btw I have a incoming second grader and in coming kindergartener too so I’m glued to your channel! Honestly I never even considered Abeka till I started watching your videos. Anyways I can’t thank you enough. Blessings to you and your family ♥️
You keep saying that you let her choose or look through certain curriculum. How do you go about doing that with your kids? I think mine would enjoy picking things out instead of me saying this is what we are doing.
Great question! I’m actually going to make a video about how I choose curriculum, but basically I narrow it down to a few options and then let them choose from there.
I use it together with Abeka 3 Arithmetic, Apologia math has fun games and activities that go along with each lesson. Then I supplement with some lessons from Abeka 3.
We don’t test in our home!!! We do creative writing but not with a curriculum!!! My twin son prefers loose left paper as he’s a lefty!!! We are looking into using something for spelling!!! We do our outen vocabulary at the moment but if we find we need to we probably would use worldly wise!!! We found we need more practice for some math concepts!!!

I love the unbound work book idea, my son is the only lefty in our family, so I had no idea it was even a thing for a lefty to struggle with.
Ahh yes, story of my life 😂
Worldly Wise looks really great... I like that you showed us inside... looks like a solid curriculum!
For sure!
Great seeing your picks for next year. I've been curious about getting into worldly wise and BJU Spelling
I know I joked about BJU spelling but I really think it looks great and is just what we’re looking for!
Great picks!! I love that your daughter helps with choosing her curriculum. 💖
I think it really helps letting them have a say in what they do for school!

Abeka grade 3 LA or TGATB? I can’t decide!

Part of me really misses the old math honestly 😭 (except maybe for the 1,000s of number cards 😂)

I haven’t used BJU yet so I can’t compare, but we’re trying it out this year and it seems like it’s laid out better, more structure and organization
Great choices!! Thanks for sharing! 😊

Are you using the teachers guide/lesson plan for the Bob jones spelling? Also, on my initial flip thru of it, I thought it looked like they introduced vocabulary words part way through the year. Did you find this to be true?
No lesson plans since it's just spelling. And no they don't have any vocab words in BJU spelling (at least at this level)

I haven’t posted that one yet. Our science and history from this year is out though.
