- Couldn't find someone that attempted to merge the two, so I decided to do it myself. I don't own the song and you should really support everyone who worked on the Metal Gear Rising Revengeance soundtrack because it's the best OST to any video game ever made.

@@ironbot2226 yeah there's the beta version which has completely different lyrics and is like 5 minutes long, mostly instrumental. Then the official version which is just, well, the official version

There's a better version, look up the Sly Shinobi mix, it bridges these two versions with an orchestral part as well

She does mention being from across ' the unforgiving sea' and from the sounds of it something happened to the boat she was on I feel like it's not too far a stretch to say that the boat was on fire at some point ( I'm guessing here)
It was prob from when she left Algiers to America , before joining Desperado

that first part exists?! why the HELL was it not used?! It is *clearly* is a direct follow-up to the rest! The original always felt like a song that ended/started halfway through and now i know why…
The first part really doesn't blend well lyrically with the second.

The problem with the first verse is different - it doesn't reflect Raiden. It's only hers, unlike every other one.
They were never parts of the same song. They were alternative versions to the same song. The beta version was written for a version of her character that was scrapped before the game shipped.

Mistral’s character themes (narrative, not musical) likely changed somewhere in between the Beta and Release versions, the first version leaning more on “Death is a mercy for my enemies” and a slight lean on the Seductress theme, while the finalized version is better versed (heh) in the theme of “I’ve found a purpose in war,” previously drifting disconnected from life.

Second half is more perfected, but something about the tone in part 1 and the “and with the blood of a dying star”, is just so good, shouldve been used.
I don't even played the game yet, but this song kicks ass! I listen to it everyday. Love the design of Mistral and Sam too.
Do yourself a favor and pick it up if you can. Its such a good game with great combat and awesome characters. Great soundtrack too. Definitely recommend it!

I can see why they cut the lyrics in half. The first part doesn't really go with the second. The first part is closer to a second boss fight. While the second part tells her history. Still good though.
Yeah, plus the change in vocal tuning is really drastic, almost sounds like two completely different people (as far as I'm aware, they're both the same vocalist). The first half also just doesn't feel as... well put together I'd say, mostly with the lyrics and vocals, it feels like the first recording compared to the final product.

They were never parts of the same song, rather, they were two different versions of one song. They just decided not to characterize Mistral that way (IE, as someone who always tries to help people at first but ultimately loses out to her own destructive nature and ruins them every time) and instead make her someone who's totally given in to that violent nature. Basically, she was meant as a foil to Jack and they ultimately decided to go with making her that foil by making her someone who's absolutely open about her shittiness rather than someone who tries to do good but can't resist the temptation to kill everyone, friends included, when the time comes.
As a result of that change, they never did their final recording for the first half of this.
I am VERY late but in the BD fight the instrumental is intentionally used because well, it's just an AI controlled extra body, it wouldn't make sense for the lyrics to play considering the lyrics are meant to characterize and the AI has no character. To the comment above me I wanted to say the lyrics aren't about Mistral succumbing to her destructive nature even when trying to help, they're about how to her, being killed by her is mercy so she's "saving" people which isn't at all how she's portayed in the final game which is why the song was ultimately retooled, because once they altered her character, the song didn't fit her, like you said.

First and second part doesn't sound alike for some reason. Feels like two different person. 2nd part hits differently than first one
I feel like the second part was edited quite a bit before they put it in the game considering the first part was never used
One portrays mistral as a love interest for raiden, while the other portrays mistral as an incredibly skilled assassin who spent a lot of her life having no purpose

Interestingly even though the lyric is actually "I sharpen the knife and look down upon the bay", "I look down upon the pain" actually also makes sense considering the true context of the lyric.
they should have stuck with the original. It's WAY better.
The femme fatale angle works better for her character, not to mention that savior complex. It's perfect. If they ever remake this game, they need to give her her original personality and remix the battle .
Also "Internal tempetures rising" should go with and "I'm about to come undone". It just fits so well because she's this psycho that gets sexual pleasure out of combat. It was definitely a missed opportunity...maybe I'll have to make a short v1de0 about it...
