  • Investing in ETFs or exchange-traded funds is a popular way to gain exposure to a diversified portfolio of assets, without the need to buy individual stocks or bonds. The key advantage of ETFs is that they allow investors to buy and hold a broad range of securities with a single purchase, making it easy to create a diversified portfolio. In this video, we will discuss the top 5 ETFs to buy and hold forever, with the ability to weather market fluctuations.

    The Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF (VTI) is an exchange-traded fund that seeks to track the performance of the CRSP US Total Market Index. The CRSP US Total Market Index is a broad-based market-cap-weighted index that includes nearly all publicly traded stocks in the U.S., ranging from large-cap to small-cap companies. VTI is designed to provide investors with exposure to the entire U.S. stock market through a single ETF. By investing in VTI, investors are able to gain exposure to a diverse portfolio of thousands of individual stocks, providing them with broad-based market exposure and potentially reducing the risks associated with holding individual stocks.
    The Vanguard 500 Index Fund ETF (VOO) is an exchange-traded fund that tracks the performance of the S&P 500 Index. The S&P 500 Index is a market-cap-weighted index that is widely considered to be a benchmark for the U.S. stock market. It includes 500 large-cap U.S. stocks across a variety of industries, representing approximately 80% of the total U.S. stock market capitalization. By investing in VOO, investors are able to gain exposure to a diversified portfolio of large-cap U.S. stocks.
    The Vanguard Total International Stock Index Fund ETF (VXUS) is an exchange-traded fund that seeks to track the performance of the FTSE Global All Cap ex US Index. This index is a broad-based market-cap-weighted index that includes nearly all publicly traded stocks in international markets, excluding the U.S. By investing in VXUS, investors are able to gain exposure to a diverse portfolio of international stocks. The ETF is designed to provide investors with exposure to stocks from developed and emerging markets outside of the U.S.
    The Vanguard Intermediate-Term Treasury ETF (VGIT) is an exchange-traded fund that seeks to track the performance of the Bloomberg Barclays US Treasury 3-10 Year Bond Index. By investing in VGIT, investors are able to gain exposure to a diversified portfolio of U.S. Treasury bonds with intermediate-term maturities. U.S. Treasury bonds are considered to be among the safest investments in the world, as they are backed by the full faith and credit of the U.S. government. Intermediate-term Treasury bonds typically offer higher yields than shorter-term Treasury bonds, while still maintaining relatively low levels of interest rate risk.
    The Vanguard Total World Stock Index Fund ETF (VT) is an exchange-traded fund that seeks to track the performance of the FTSE Global All Cap Index. This index is a broad-based market-cap-weighted index that includes nearly all publicly traded stocks in both the U.S. and international markets. The ETF is designed to provide investors with exposure to stocks from over 50 countries and includes companies of all sizes, ranging from large to small-cap companies.

    I’m currently investing in VUAA (Ireland-domiciled version of VOO) cuz I’m a non-US resident and I do want to avoid the insane 30% dividend withholding tax of VOO. However, VUAA does come with a higher expense ratio of 0.07% compared to VOO’s 0.03%.

      I'm investing in the same fund. The difference between 0.03% and 0.07% is so negligible that you shouldn't worry about it.
      If you're thinking about it from a non-retirement account perspective, then it's even better for many Europeans, because the dividends are reinvested and you don't pay tax on them. (or you may have to depending on the country).

      Higher returns. Saving account right now is abut 5% (which is unusually high) and the rates fluctuate, but the money is safe secured by FDIC. Etfs averge 7-10% return but you can lose money. You should not put money in an etf if you'll need that money in the next 5 years. Put that money in a good CD or saving account.

    Instead of buying VGIT, why not just put the money in a money market account at a bank. I'm getting 5.25% right now at Vio Bank and don't have to pay a management fee. The bad thing about that bond fund also is that you actually loss money because it never kept up with inflation. Perhaps gold/silver would of been a better hedge of inflation or VTIP than VGIT?

      Go a little more aggressive in your roth. If you already have international exposure in your 401k I would consider maybe going all VTI in your Roth. Possibly adding in like 10-15% in VXUS. You will draw from your Roth after your 401k (due to tax benefits) so you have more time to recover from volatility which is why I say you can be slightly more aggressive. Putting any bonds in a Roth is a waste

      I’ve just run in to what Jarred mentioned in my brokerage acct. I only held 9 different funds in my account and I’m trying to simplify plus transition to lower fee and tax efficient options. The market being down is helping me a bit because I can sell at a small loss and reinvest, so it’s advantageous for my taxes. I have some where the dividends were automatically reinvested, so I have some shares that are short term, and I will need to wait on transitioning those. All that to say is it’s a lot to juggle and I’d consider simplifying sooner than later before the market turns and you have a lot of gains and feel stuck with those funds.

      1. Not a big enough difference between the two to be concerned at all. I have 2 family members that prefer Fidelity so I have them in FSKAX.
      2. I wouldn't call overweighting the top 500 a pro, but I also wouldn't call it a con if that's your intention. While it doesn't make sense from a technical standpoint, if holding both is going to keep you invested (from a behavioral standpoint) then I don't see a problem with it. I know some people who just can't make up their minds between the two. Instead of continuing to stay out of the market and reduce regret, they choose to hold both.

    Why would someone choose VTI/VXUS over VT in your opinion?

    • @Sylvan_dB
      @Sylvan_dB Рік тому +2

      In my opinion, and why I choose VTI+VXUS is for two reasons:
      * the pair combined is (or was?) cheaper than the single fund
      * the pair allows a preferred ratio of US vs ex-US

    • @doomshallot4203
      @doomshallot4203 Рік тому

      I choose VT because it's simpler. But the advantages of separating it into VTI/VXUS is you can control how much weight of international you take, and the expense ratio of VTI is much lower, so you'll save some money over the long run. The advantages of just buying VT is better though.

    • @JarradMorrow
      @JarradMorrow  Рік тому +4

      I can only speak to this based on my personal situation. It's more of a behavioral reason. I'm not confident enough that I'll be able to hold onto VT due to how much is allocated to international. For now I hold both VTI/VXUS to improve my chances of staying invested for longer which is my ultimate goal.
