      I'd love to do a skimboard, I don't get to the beach very often though. In the meantime you should check out my video on an easy, inexpensive pow-surfer build, a skimboard would pretty much be built the same way unless you wanted to do composites.

    I recently got a mountainboard. The only other board sport I can do is snowboarding. And I struggle with mountainboarding at the moment. I simply need more practice. But one thing I can't wrap my head around at the moment is, how do I control my speed. I get the powerslide for a full stop. But what if I simply want to slow down a little? Maybe a little tutorial video for that? Would be awesome if you could do that.

    • @GoodRoads
      @GoodRoads  3 роки тому +1

      I've had a video about that in mind for a while now because you're right: it's the oddest thing about mountainboarding. Some quick thoughts: you can learn to do standing check-slides, it just takes a little work. It's also SUPER helpful to adjust your tire pressure so that you roll at a comfortable speed for whatever run you're taking

    • @Kathlanus
      @Kathlanus 3 роки тому +1

      @@GoodRoads You mean kind of smaller power slides? Sounds similar to snowboarding :D Thank you

    • @GoodRoads
      @GoodRoads  3 роки тому +1

      Sort of, to me they feel more like speed check slides in longboarding with the way the wheels break out and hook up. It takes a little more oomph than snowboarding

    • @GoodRoads
      @GoodRoads  4 роки тому

      Yes! I have never owned a set so single-track has always been pretty darn scary for me, but most sets of trucks have mounting points for brake systems.

    I'm on a trip to the Tetons, and getting some mountainboarding in.
    Getting lots of comments from people, usually the the effect of "Woah a mountainboard! Its been forever since I've seen one, used to have one back in the day"
    But there was this one exchange I though you'd really enjoy.
    Dude was all "Is that a mountainboard? I used to ride those 20 years ago until I ended up in the ICU.
    Its just in the attic, I should get it out again."
    Its kind of sad, mountainboarding is obviously recognizable to a lot of people, but as something from the early 2000's and not as something with present relevance.

    Nice video! I've been thinking about buying one of these but I'm worried about not being able to use it due to the lack of large hills in my area... Is it hard to pick up speed on a Mountain Board or will they get going even on a small hill?

    • @GoodRoads
      @GoodRoads  3 роки тому +1

      If you run the tires at a pretty high psi you can hold speed fairly well on a small hill. It helps to have better hubs if you want to go that route

    do you have any advice for older people who want to try this out? People who have not done any board riding of any sort?
    Thanks for any suggestions.

    • @GoodRoads
      @GoodRoads  3 роки тому +1

      Sure! I think a beginner of any age would do well to start out on a mellow grassy hill with plenty of flat space at the bottom. Get yourself familiar with how it feels to be strapped into the board, maybe wear your bindings a little loose at first so you can jump off the board if you need to. Start to get a feel for shifting your weight from your toes to your heels to initiate turns. Go slow and don't push outside of your comfort zone too much at first, aim for gradual growth. As I've gotten older I've found that pads have gone from a nice-to-have to a straight up necessity, and I've also found that stretching makes a world of difference in terms of how good a day I have on the hill. Also: hydration is key. Older bodies do take a bit more care so take the time to do it right!

    • @GabrielJM
      @GabrielJM 3 роки тому +1

      Thank you!!
      When falling forwards do you take the first impact on your knee pads and then on your forearms or is there another technic for forward falls when learning? I would be wearing knee, elbow and wrist protection. Thanks again for spurring interest in this sport!

    • @GoodRoads
      @GoodRoads  3 роки тому

    So just got my first board and I got because I love snowboarding so much but the board seems so heavy when trying to tricks like Manuel's or even 180s is there something im missing

    • @GoodRoads
      @GoodRoads  3 роки тому

      Nope, the boards are just heavier. Think of it like the difference between skiing and mountain biking. We need stuff like wheels and trucks so that we can move over the ground where a snowboard just slides, and all of that means extra weight. Don't get discouraged! All it takes is building up the right leg muscles and then when you transfer back over to snowboarding you'll be able to whip your board around like it's nothing!

    Can you move on flat grass Stead of going downhill?

    • @GoodRoads
      @GoodRoads  4 роки тому

      You can push the same way you'd push a skateboard. It's a little harder because the axels are wider, and grass doesn't roll as well as pavement, but it can be done. It's definitely easier and more fun if you've got a bit of a hill though

    0:38 mall grab

    • @GoodRoads
      @GoodRoads  4 роки тому +1

      It's not a mall grab on a mountainboard. The boards weigh ~15lbs and if you grab a truck the opposite wheels roll on the grounds. It's the easiest way to move these boards around. Even if it was: who cares about mall grabbing anyway?

    Is it electric ⚡️

  • @skelitalmisfit12
    @skelitalmisfit12 3 роки тому

    i feel like miniature independent suspension would really help these boards out. give you a inch or two higher and could be adjusted for stiffness or built with strong coils or air shocks. I know thatd involve an insane increase in maintenance but i could see how itd be a little better. it seems like you only have max 1 and a 1/4 inch of clearance on flat and super manicured trails.
