I was wondering.. What if you 'd make a set of Metal Moulds?.. Guaranteed to have a great surface finish right out of the mold.. and if you do have a lathe.. that makes trimming the back way easier and better..
I'm 15 living in India and I have watched all your videos to make a skateboard because skateboard are really expensive in India and I wanna introduce the skateboard culture to India by selling quality skateboards but at a significantly low price I loved all your videos they are really informational ❤
You have made yourself into the defacto authority on DIY skate builds - I know I'll be referencing this one day when I'm attempting to cast my own. Thanks again!
Have a look for Quickun Plastic Exhaust Air Silencers, they can quiet the sound of the released air on that pressure pot quite well. There's a company using them to silence deflating stand up paddle-boards.
Love it man! Congrats on the successful wheels. This is somewhat similiar to the process I use for making fingerboard wheels 🤟 your content is so awesome man
Please can you tell me how to make 75a hardeness longboard 85mm wheel What should I used 1. Polyurethane resin or 2. polyurethane elastomer I respect your hard work help me
Have you checked out BJB resins? They have a shore 95A called M-3195 that has a 15-20min pot life. It's a little viscous when pouring, but its strong as shit. Really durable rubber. I'm a prototyper and use these materials regularly. Great job doing this DIY style man!
This is brilliant :) I've been DIYing concrete stuff for our local psots, with a made up company name, so I reckon a diy skate wheel company could be next :) For wheel types, something 50-52mm and hard, for the crete park squeaks ?
Good roads can we make bigger size skateboard wheel molds for like 60 mm or 70 mm for cruiser and bowl wheels please and thank you and vert wheels as well
Those are NOT Vice Grips, those are channel lock pliers. WEAR SAFETY GLASSES when using any replaceable blade knife in that fashion. When they snap small bits of blade shrapnel fly everywhere.
Would it be possible to make wheels with a soft urethane body, perhaps with some holes through, and a harder few mm surface urethane? Guessing it would be a two-step process. Thinking it would give a smoother ride on rough asphalt while keeping full power slide-ability?
Absolutely *love* these videos, and being a bit of a DIY’er myself throughout the years, and skating since the late 80s, finally trying my hands on something like this has been a long time coming, so these videos are great :) I have a couple of questions regarding the urethane you use and the duro they produce, if you have the time: how does it compare to commercialy produced wheels? as in can the duro on the 90 formula be changed, for would one have to use the 40 formula, or how does that whole thing work? Can the 90-formula be softened to make softer wheels? And do the wheel manufacturers actually «blend» their own urethane formula’s based on some «base mixes» they have? Sorry if this is a lot of questions, just very curious about the difference between these «off the shelf» mixtures vs the ones used by wheel manufacturers and how much the off the shelf stuff can be «modified» :)
As far as I understand it, urethane is one formula = one durometer. I don't think you can modify the duro of a formula without doing damage to it. Wheel manufacturers will often have proprietary urethane formulas that they've worked together with resin manufacturers to get the properties they want
@@GoodRoads aaah, right, of course, makes sense :) Thanks for taking the time to reply :) Have been looking around for some european distributors of the stuff you’re using but no luck, so gonna have to go in blind and order something that’s available in the european market and see what happens, exciting times indeed :) Thanks btw for all your great videos, huge inspiration and loads of fun to follow along :)
Do you think it would be possible to cast a PU sleeve on top of my current longboard wheels to make them larger? I hope to extend them from 83mm to 110mm in a softer durometer to make for a more comfortable ride on my DIY electric skateboard. Can't find larger wheels in my country. I have thought about drilling holes on the wheel so that when i cast the PU extension it has something to grip onto
They would eventually delaminate. The dissimilar resins won't bond like a homogeneous mix does. The better option is to use these videos as a tutorial to DIY entirely new wheels.
Resin printers make EXCELLENT molds, you can see some of my experiments with that in previous videos. I am not very good at resin printing though, which is why I'm doing my best to make FDM printed molds work as best as possible.
@@GoodRoads Ah, gotcha! Yeah I got a quote for your pool wheel mold SLA printed and it was over $300.... Look forward to experimenting with your FDM molds. I might try to post process it myself sand it down a bit but we will see haha

have you ever got beer from a tap? tilt your cup a little and pour your material down the edge of the cup to avoid bubbles. if you heat your molds in an oven around 150 to 200f it avoids moisture and makes better products , even the 1 to 1 ratio stuff. unmixed poly and air bubbles are the enemy. we all in whole machine shop i worked atput our poly resin in vacum pots while we would melt down the mocca crystals. then put your dye in that. enough for the whole order so the color is consistent. you should hire me i have a lot of training and experience with poly and making molds. im also a master welder. it seems like you are doing some things out of order man and not taking care when you mix. you can use a dremel with a rum sander to trim them use it lightly and if you get marks. flame kiss them. the ones with out bubbles look excellent for someone self taught
Have you explored affiliate links w/amazon yet? I've done exactly 1 video with affiliate links, and its easily my most profitable video in... 4 years. More money from a un-monetized video with 7k views, than a monetized hit with 70k. I've not done much with affiliate stuff because, well, lately I'm mostly doing experiments people aren't going to have reason to copy. But for tutorials and how-to's you tend to have a lot more opportunities for it. Ive tried unsuccessfully to mold wheels with your open source mold. I'm happy to see this follow up video. Are your molds FDM or resin printed? What material are your molds? Also, what brand of "paste wax" did you use? Thanks, Chris!
I've done both FDM and Resin (PLA and an ABS-like resin respectfully) and the paste wax I use is called trewax. It's a wood finish but I wonder if there are mold-treating specific waxes out there. What went wrong with your castings? Maybe I can help troubleshoot
I forgot to ask in the video: What kind of wheel should I make a mold for next?
How about going to the other extreme? A 85mm ldp wheel with a huge core?

Nice to see you back at the shop. Are you planning on revisiting the truck project?
At some point for sure, I want to try a different approach to the tooling
If you can manage to get your hands on a small tumbler (or diy one) you could probably smooth those molds down enough to get rid of the lines
every wheel i ever bought had those lines in them. thats why a lot of wheels dont slide right until they "break in"
