I think that there's more to say on "Boob in a Door" discourse. I did see some folks who were like "The boob in a door tweet ruined the book for me" which makes me think:
1. I probably should have found another way to make the point April's tweet is making after I heard from people that it was weird (even if I was technically correct that a real woman would absolutely tweet that tweet...since lots of real women have.)
2. I worry that sometimes "It vital that we are aware of the inequities of the world" that can be interpreted as "I should lot allow myself to enjoy perfect things and also I should be hyper vigilant for anything that may be imperfect...and thus I should not enjoy anything" that I think is not great.
But hey, it's always been a mess out here. You can get my books at places where books are sold!!

Apparently the german translators had an idea how that might happen, because they specified that the door was indeed a "Schiebetür" = a sliding door.

Translator here, I wanted to say this but you were faster haha, either the translator had some special insight, or he added his own logic to the translation (which you generally should not do on your own accord in our job, especially not when directly quoting someone as you add words to their mouth) :D

I'm not a woman, but I was classically trained as a woman. I have closed my boob in a door several times. It could be because I have unorthodoxly large boobs or it could be my lack of coordination.

I interpreted that line as like, closing a door while being slightly in its path. So rather than like "pinching my boob between the door and door frame", more like "smacking a door into my boob". I've done that before, and I would *absolutely* describe that as "closing my boob in a door" while tweeting about it in an attempt to cultivate a public image, like April was.

pinching your boob between the door and door frame would be worlds more painful and also very difficult, but closing a door and your boob being in the way isn’t a huge deal if you have big boobs (I probably don’t even notice when it happens… it’s normal for them to get in the way lol)
Thanks for this explanation. That hadn't occurred to me. All of the people who posted about it on Twitter, I wonder which scenario actually happened to their boob.
"Babe, I just slammed my boob in the door. I didn't need that boob anyway." Is something I've said at least twice, and what actually happens is I lose my balance and try to grab the door for support and it starts to close, so I try to get out of the way, and my rib cage is clear, but not my boob, and then I briefly feel like I died.
I went to school for 4 years for creative writing and one of the lessons that kept coming up was "It doesn't matter if something actually happened; if it seems implausible, the reader will reject it." Prime example right here.
Reminds me of the classic distinction between real life and fiction: fiction has to make sense.

1. They protrude from the *front* of the body (more or less), so they're out of the way of the thighs when standing and they're not underneath the body when sitting.
This does, however, mean that they *are* in the way of the thighs when sitting. This is why you rarely see men sitting with their thighs touching each other.
2. Everyone bites their tongue sometimes, but it's still mind-boggling how our tongues manage to so dexterously dodge our teeth so many times per day without us ever needing to think about it.
I think it's a similar process here.
This is a great case of "it hasn't happened to me, I can't imagine it happening, therefore it can't happen"

I always took the whole boob in a door thing to just mean that April had much bigger boobs than I do. Like, even the experience of having boobs is not universal, because there is no way on earth I could close mine in a door, but I don’t know what it’s like to have big boobs, so maybe it’s possible?

I am super clumsy in general, but my penchant for injuries reached new and impressive heights during puberty and pregnancy - two times when your body suddenly and dramatically changes shape, so I absolutely get how this would make it more likely! ...also you may have just talked me out of ever getting a boob job. 😂 Anyway, I hope that you adjust to your new shape soon and boob-related injuries decrease for you. Even moderately sized ones take some getting used to. 😆

I also don't know what it's like to NOT have boobs. I asked my trans friend who got theirs removed what it was like and they said, "My chest gets cold now!" And I said, "WHAT?!" Blew my mind! I immediately turned to my husband and said, "Does your chest get cold?!" And he said yes and just. Wow.
It's not something I've personally noticed since top surgery, but it might be related to not wearing a bra/binder.
I can answer this! I don't bind or wear a bra, and haven't for years. As long as i'm wearing a shirt that covers all of them (ie no sideboob visible), they're not usually cold. The only times I can think of it happening were when they were chafed for unrelated reasons and when I was going through withdrawal coming off my SSRI. That's not to say it doesn't happen - i just don't remember ever noticing it outside of those situations

"Man boobs" exist and are a thing, so when I first saw the title I thought: a) Hank is way too slender to have man-boobs; and b) If it happened to him, it's probably more like a door smashed into his chest from being opened from the other side by someone else. Imagine my surprise to find out what the vlog was actually about! (BTW I can confirm, as a woman, boob-door conflicts can absolutely happen, and yes, it does hurt like a mofo.)

That is why when we translate contracts, we usually add a line like "in case of disputes the English version of this contract is the only valid one", if the translation adds more details (without the author giving them) something went wrong haha

Haven't yet had the pleasure of reading past book 1 of AART and have somehow managed to miss all the boobinadoor discourse! You know, I read the title and immediately flashed back several years ago to a turning point in my own life. Where I'm hunched over in the driver's seat of my car, bruises forming on either side of my head and demanding of myself: "FFS, your friends call you 'the smart one', you have a law degree. How the heck did you just slam your head in the car door?!?"
It's a turning point, because prior to it the idea of people slamming unlikely body parts in doors was ridiculous sounding. Then immediately afterwards, literally everything seems entirely plausible. Could be brain damage, but if you say you slammed something in a door, I'll believe you. You don't need to explain yourself further.

I think this is a temper to the old adage of "write what you know" because, yeah, a basis in your own experience - in Hanks case, getting big online - is great to have a strong skeleton for narrative. However, writing what you don't know with earnest and thoughtful research and talking to people who live different lives is pivotal for us understanding each other better.
I have never shut my boob in a door, and i may have looked at this sideways in another time. But now i know it does happen and i feel like I'm just a little bit better and more empathetic as a person. Thanks Hank. I'll go full the census now

Yeah, it happens. It happened to me last month.
While I was on mammography shift. Yes, I'm aware of the irony.
I wanted to exit the room, but my right feet managed to step in front of the steel door I was opening, so when I stepped forward and tried to go through what I thought was the I-opened-it-wide-door my right boob slammed on the sharp side of the it was-not-supposed-to-be-there-door.
As a Neuro spicy woman... I've done things like this. Not a full door, but a cabinet door. 😅
As a person with boobs, I can tell you that even though I don't remember ever having specifically done this, I didn't blink at it in the book. It didn't even cross my mind to wonder if it was possible/plausible!

The thing is, humans are clumsy sometimes. There are all kinds of doors, too. Chances are, if you can think of a body part, then it's quite possible that somebody, somewhere has closed it in a door of some kind or another.
It has the same rhythm to the opening line of "Call Me Maybe": "I threw a wish in a well."/"I closed my boob in a door."

When the Smosh podcast episode with you as a guest came out, you guys talked a bit about your book, and midway through I stopped it, went out, and bought your book. Less than a week later I bought the next in the series. I’d say that podcast was pretty good advertising 😂
Once they get past a certain size, you can pretty much hit/ bump/ get stuck/ pinched/ squished on pretty much anything. People with small boobs see "punched in the chin with their boob" and think it's fake. I straight up punch myself with one every few months.
While I would never have thought that possible prior, I also wouldn't have questioned it because I occasionally accidentally punch myself in the face when trying to do stuff, so. No reason to doubt it lol

I find this discourse very interesting. I'm not a woman, but I have ADHD, and many friends with ADHD, many of whom are women, and our lack of spatial awareness when it comes to our bodies is so strong that "having a boob caught in a door" sounds not only entirely possible, but bound to happen eventually.

I mean of course the people in that subreddit didn't even bother looking up whether that was a thing that had ever happened. The whole point of it is to mock authors, they don't care if the mocking is justified (and yes, a lot of the time it is), they just want an excuse to do the mocking.

Twice. Sliding balcony door at a hotel and a pantry door situated on a corner, where I was trying to be all cool and just lean around the corner. I slipped and fell forward, catching my hand on the pantry door instinctively, which of course shuts the door.
If you have ever caught a belt loop on a door handle, you have experienced the "how did I even manage to do that" feeling that comes with.
I know a guy who did this. He's big and he works as a mechanic, he was reaching over the roof of a car and the driver's door swung back in on him.
In my humble opinion, there's nothing funnier than someone who doesn't speak German trying to read German!

I was very happy he specified it was German and showed the text, because I couldn’t have told what he was saying from him reading. I am German. Nevertheless, I enjoyed his enthusiasm.
As someone who has opened a door into the side of their head with such reckless abandon that they blacked out for a few seconds. I can completely understand how the ladies out there are getting their boobs in the way of a closing door and can empathise with them.
One time I was baking cookies, and turned on the oven light to peer into the oven and watch the cookies. I was talking with my mom, and my brother was doing dishes. God knows why, but after a few moments of looking at the cookies, he walked over and opened the oven with such a force that the handle struck my head like a hummer and I was slammed to the floor. I didn't black out, but it made my eyes roll in my head like billiards balls. While I'm still stammering a response that is somewhere between anger, confusion, and indignant suffering, he declares "YOU SHOULDNT PUT YOUR FACE NEAR DOORS WHEN PEOPLE ARE OPENING THEM." Meanwhile my mother was in tears laughing that her adult son had just been crippled by a delighted 15 year old.
The moral of the story is I wish my brother would open a door into the side of his own head, and I empathize with anyone who has slammed their boobs in a door
Boob in a door reminds me of the concept of holding in period blood. Because, unlike most people with vaginas, I actually can hold in my period blood for a time due to a weird combination of anatomy and overactive muscles. Not a universal experience, but at least one woman in the world can do it.
Anyway, off to answer a census!
I could too, when I still menstruated! If it was a lot of blood I couldn't, but some I could. Definitely surprised me to find out most people can't do this

@@geeksdo1tbetter it depends on how much blood is in there. If it's a small amt then more or less indefinitely (until I would go to the bathroom). If it was more then maybe an hour? If it was a lot then a few minutes.
And it's not exactly comfortable, even just a small amount. It's rather distracting, actually.

Hi, German translator here, in the translation of the tweet it specifies that it was a SLIDING DOOR, either the translator had some special insight, or he added his own logic to the translation (which you generally should not do on your own accord in our job, especially not when directly quoting someone as you add words to their mouth) :D
Sliding door is still a door nonetheless.
@@rdizzy1 True, but it is kind of a crucial detail, and it appears the translator just made it up, so he changed someones direct quote and added context that does not exist. Just not what you are supposed to do (unless it was discussed with the publishers/editors/authors)

You are right, it might be the case (I hope it is not). It changes nothing in about the fact that that is not something you should ever do as a translator (again, unless specifically told to do so or givenn the freedom to do so which is not very commn in this type of project). As a translator you are there to translate the word and the idea in the appropriate tone, you are not supposed to add details or change the story, if the author does not speak the language you translate to, he has (to a degree) to blindly trust your work, which adds a layer of professional responsibility.
as for your question, I defaulted to the male pronouns because that is just how I (and the vast majority of people on or pretty little planet) communicate, I am fairly certain everyone else perfectly understood what I meant. In my personal opinion, being gender inclusive in everyday speech and writing is often counterproductive because it easily kills legibility and pulls you out from the material you are reading, in German "Gendering" can get out of hand very quickly because in many cases you have to break traditional grammar and use relatively new guidelines/rules that are more or less defined and standardized, there are a few different ways of approaching gendering (weird word, but that is what it is called), and none of them is easy on the eye. All of that being said after 8 years and a few thousand sucessfull projects, I can only think of one client that specifically wanted to use gender-inclusive speech in English and one in Geman which was recently, and the client herself was aware that it does not look good on a blog, but she wanted to do it to make a point, and well, I work for her so I did what I was asked to do.
If your question was intended as more of a jab at me for "assuming her gender" I am really sorry if that offended you in any way, that was not my intention, if I knew she was a she I would have used female pronouns, but again I don't think that is what most people would take away from what I said. In the end, in this case, the gender of the translator is completely irrelevant because it is about the profession, and you have to do your job professionally whichever gender you are not saying that she did not, but just to explain why it does not matter, even if she had the "insight").

@shaynannigans Some are "required" in that the ranking is dragging and dropping options that begin in a set order, so there will be results no matter what. I use about 2 social media platforms, I dragged them to the top. The rest are just random all.

If they change the questions even slightly, it changes the results, and because they want to compare these results with other years, it’s better to lives with the faults then to start all over again
Wonderful video, but my comment comes from the nerdfighter census. On the question about the down time in the P4A, I actually really enjoyed it because it gave me less FOMO and allowed me a time to just rest. The whole weekend I was scared of missing out on niche p4a lore but I didn’t have to worry about that when I was sleeping. It really was a nice few hours. There was no “other (please specify)” box for that question but I wanted it to be said.

I graduated medical school last summer and for the first time was able to put in that I had a degree, a full time job and a good income. I went three decades of my life without them, so those first few yrs with them i was more likely to just catch them on things in general. But also they arent at all close together; in fact, they cud not rly be further apart from each other, each sticks out slightly not just in front of me but also to my side; so if my arms not blockin it, its quite a lot easier to catch it in either direction
I think the biggest factor tho is just that theyre smth i had to get used to bein there, and had three decades of exp of them not bein there playin against me when it came to my muscle memory
Its a perfect storm with all those things, tho i also know ive seen plenty of other transfems talk about exps with smackin boobs way more than one rly wudve expected. Usually whilst also mentionin how euphoric it feels even tho it hurts a ton; its just, it hurts cuz theyre finally there to get in the way all the time
I mean… no bra and a sufficiently large bust would make it pretty possible, I think! I shockingly haven’t done this but it certainly didn’t strike me as odd, just made me think she must be fairly busty. Once you get past a certain size they just don’t stay in place very well outside of a well-fitted comfy bra!

I remember when I read this part in the book I got up and went to all the doors in my house seeing if I could shut my boob in them. It was a bit hard but possible, though I couldn’t imagine it happening to me by accident. I came to the conclusion that you have to have the right boobs and the right door coming together in the most wrong combination for it to work
