You are brilliant! Boy, do you know your methods cold…from start to finish. I costume antique dolls of the 1860s-70s and your methods are applicable to any era of historic costuming. Thanks so much for showing us all how. You’ve made me fall in love with mid-20th c millinery too. So much fun.
IIona, I am a seamstress and just started using UA-cam a lot recently. I am new to hat and facinator making and really appreciate all your videos. Each one is very informative. This one I really liked learning how to block. favourite2023
What a marvelous hat! Thank you for your very detailed and interesting videos. I would love it if you also made videos about how hats are meant to fit, do they sit on whole head, or are attached like a fascinator, etc?
An electric carving knife -either no longer in food service or purchased specifically for craft use, like from a thrift store-is perfect for carving cured foam! Many avid cosplayers, propmakers, and production designers keep one in their kit. I’ve also seen them used to carve out special backgrounds from expanding foam for pet enclosures, from reptile vivariums to cat houses and trompe l'oeil home decor. I’d bet you would find 101 uses in your adventurous millinery!
@@ByIlonaMillineryThank you! Yes i see that and I loved your hat week event VLOG! Oh I am just playing around with items I already have but I created a fabulous Butterfly fascinator just last week!
I need to know how you did the pre-blocked brim shape. Assuming one were starting from scratch, how would one first model the brim shape your pre-blocked wired buckram form is made from? (Maybe I’m just confused, but do I sound like I’m investigating the age-old “chicken or egg” theory?😂).
I think I mentioned in the video that I had previously blocked the wool felt on a block of that shape. I didn't end up using that blocked brim for that hat I was making at the time because the white felt had some staining on it. So I kept it, and it came in useful for "cloning" that shape.
Fans: FYI “gaffer” tape is not the same as duct tape; it seems to be used by theatrical lighting techs due to its unique properties and composition which differ from duct tape.
Hello, I happened to have an old brim I had blocked ages ago lying around and wanted to copy it. But you can apply this technique to any shape - a plant pot, a fruit bowl, or what ever else you can think of!

I use wood rasps to shape the foam. There are so many different ones. I can show you some of my favs if you would like.😊
Thank you! Yes, I figured out wood rasps existed for this video where I restored wooden hat blocks: ua-cam.com/video/Xjk6LFZ65K0/v-deo.html

What style hat are you wearing ??
Could I do this to make a slightly teardrop button block?
Hello! I suggest the wire frame method would work better, here is a video about wire frame blocks: ua-cam.com/video/wj_xzdXD4wE/v-deo.html
@@ByIlonaMillinery I would love to see you make a teardrop pill or a teardrop button!
Good morning ma, I'm watching from Nigeria

Not worth the hat. I will never make a hat with this kind of mess
What style hat are you wearing ??
Hi Kay, I would call it a flat top crown with a large mushroom brim. I talk more about it in this video: ua-cam.com/video/KZtV6cDIc3s/v-deo.html
