    The USA models are plecked which is one reason the frets are slightly smoother. For the most part, the tribute and fullerton are very very similar.

    • @charlie-obrien
      @charlie-obrien 4 роки тому +2

      I have a USA Legacy and just picked up a Tribute Doheny. the build quality is not far off an the sound is absolutely marvelous, with the PTB controls and the MFD pick ups (with individually adjustable pole pieces), the range you can dial in is unbelievable.

  • @jasonclark8013
    @jasonclark8013 2 роки тому +7

    Great review. I bought a Tribute Doheny in surf green, and I love it. It's so versatile. Very well-made. The MFD pickups are smooth, powerful, and ultra-quiet (i.e., basically "noiseless"). [fun fact: These single-coil G&L pickups have adjustable pole pieces, like a PAF humbucker or whatever.] The tremolo is buttery and stays in tune perfectly. The PTB tone controls are so simple yet so brilliant; having an individual treble and bass allows WAY more flexibility and customization than the standard tone controls that basically just dull (de-treble) each pickup; the G&L tone control system is the way it ought to be. The fretwork is very solid (probably not as pro as the USA-made one, but very good nonetheless). I could go on and on... These are great guitars. [Oh, btw... Some people have complained that the string spacing puts the E strings too close to the edge, and I initially noticed a tendency to roll my fingers off the cliff, but... If you take like 20 mins. to get used to it and clean up your fingering... I realized it was sloppy fingering as much as anything; I basically never fall off now. So, yes, it might be 1 or 2 mm. closer to the edge, but it's not "wrong" - just different. It's like playing a guitar with a different nut width and then complaining that it's "too narrow" or "too wide" when really it just takes some player adaptability.] Anyway, that's my spiel. Doheny is boss.

    I am so happy to say that my wife gave me a Tribute model Doheny for Christmas yesterday. I'm smiling just writing about it. I immediately bonded with the guitar and played it for around two hours after unboxing it. I love everything about it: the surf green finish, the awesome pickups, the block inlays, the lacquered neck, the tremolo, the tone...oh man... the TONE. WOW! I was inspired from the first chord, coming up with one idea after another.

    • @jasonclark8013
      @jasonclark8013 2 роки тому +1

      Surf green for the win. [My wife said "yes" to me buying my own, so basically the same story - lol.] And yes, I would be sorely disappointed to NOT have the block inlays. You can order a custom shop USA with blocks, but the standard USA series has dots, and I can't for the life of me figure out why. The block inlays are so rad!

      Joe Pass did!
      It makes a lot of sense if you think about what was going on in the market at the time it came out (1958). Gibson had the Les Paul since 1952, it was a jazz player endorsed solid body with p90s and bigsby, and had a huge upgrade the year before, humbucker pickups. The Jazzmaster was Fender's answer to that.

    I was able to snag one of the last available surf green ones from my local shop no less! Tribute series. It’s my “forever” guitar. The versatility is unbeatable, which makes it the perfect choice for me being on a rather tight budget. It can convincingly handle any genre you throw at it. The tone controls (one for treble, one for bass) are WAY more useful than the traditional treble roll-offs per pickup. Fretwork is flawless. It’s pretty heavy; that’s the only potential complaint, I guess. I could go on and on about this guitar.

I'm glad to have matured enough to give them another try. [I will say... Part of the special appeal of the Doheny is that it doesn't have those big block letters like the ASAT and LEGEND. So, I guess I'm still somewhat a sucker for superficiality.]

    E Major, E F# G (Single note run on low E), G# minor 7, A5, F# minor 7, B9
    Not sure if Lee is omitting the odd note here and there from some of the chords given the laid back feel of the jam but I’m pretty sure that’s it, assuming noodling pentatonic is fine.
    Pete’s noodling/licks before his solo are so nice, love it!

    From what I can tell, the nut width on the Tribute is ~41.3mm while on the Fullerton it's ~42.9. Assuming that's true, I wonder why they did that. It sounds like there's going be a fair amount of roll-off on that first string. If it weren't for that, I may have bought a Tribute already. Since I don't have any to try out near me, I'm hesitant now.

    you could probably use the bass roll off knob on the doheny and make it sound more like the jazzmaster.

    thats actually my trick with my legacy. Its better than just the regular strat sounds because it can go brighter if you want that but still has the 50s sound on 7 on the volume.

    Egg comes before the chicken. Very simple evo biology. I have had both a G&L Legacy and Comanche Tribute. These guitars are super high quality; especially at the price point.

    BRILLIANT JAMS guys and man alive Lee your skill and musicality has progressed light years since those early Capt & Chappers days. All your hard practice is paying off. Magical.

    Tributes have the same pickups as the US guitars (unless they have Duncans in the US model - Fallouts for example) but I do believe the hardware is imported as well. I've heard this many times in the past, but for example, their store for the dual fulcrum bridge (or saddle lock) has the following bit: 'Dual Fulcrum vibrato kit ... Original equipment on USA models and will also fit Tribute instruments.'

    Nice!
    The 'Doheney' (as another user mentions below) would be a SoCal surf music tie-in. And, actually, I think the 'Betty Paige Mermaid' would be for the 'hot rod set' (Sunset & Doheney), and the 'Hula Girl' would be for the 'surfers' (Doheney Beach). The Mermaid definitely has that drag racing, suped up vibe to it.

    Today reviewing this VIDEO, I again have to give you "Congratulations"
    you got it right with the guitar riffs without that excess of distortion pedals etc,
    this is always a point to favor in my modest opinion for an GREAT Review
    and I already decided that I'm going to buy another guitar that will be a Doheny,
    hugs here from Portugal !!!!!

    G&L= George and Leo as in Leo Fender. There are no coincidences here. All G&L guitars are intended to be what the predecessors were meant to evolve into.
