    Watching someone else struggle with the battle frontier makes me feel so much better about my long attempts to get the gold medals in the tower and dome after most comp players called these the easiest facilities

      For real. I’ve gotten so close to getting the Gold for the Battle Pike and the Silver for the Battle Factory right before some RNG shenanigans destroyed my run. At least we can all struggle together 😂.

    You made me buy pokemon emerald and sapphire again. As a dumb 9 year old kid I did not know about natures, ivs, evs and moves that don’t do damage. I wanted to get the gold frontier badges and thanks to your guides I’m going to try now !

    As someone who has been running Emerald Battle Frontier essentially since the game was released, bot casually in a theory crafting way but then competitively, I have some constructive criticism to give you.
    You need to drop Steelix. I get that you like Steelix and this is a challenge run to win with Pokemon you like which aren't necessarily the best, but having all of your Pokemon initially slow is detrimental - but Steelix is not only slow, he's also a one-trick. Sturdy and Mud Slap are both handy, yes, but it's common knowledge at this point that the RNG will just let trainers at the Frontier hit you if it feels like it, despite impossible odds with -6 accuracy and +6 evasion. Steelix is also dead weight because while Steel is arguably the best type in the game, Steelix itself takes heavy damage from Water, Fire, and neutral from Grass which is not good. Tyranitar can carry its own weight and Dusclops is hit or miss, but with Dusclops being a stalling machine and Steelix being a scout which is weak to many of the most common attacking types in the game on top of a somewhat low HP stat and an abysmal special defense, something has to budge. But Dusclops is objectively better than Steelix because of Pressure, Normal and Fighting immunity, as well as having special attack coverage options if/when necessary. Steelix has high defense but not much else. I like it too, but I heavily suggest swapping Steelix for something more on the special attacking side, that way you have a 2:1 ratio of offense instead of 2:1 ratio of stall. This compounds on top of the fact that Dusclops is also dead weight, but it provides more as a dedicated stall rather than Steelix just being used to look at a team. You're essentially playing with 2 Pokemon while everyone else plays with 3. Fire Blast or Hydro Pump can blitz Steelix before it can Roar or Torment which immediately puts you behind.
    With all that said, Skarmory is an alright replacement, but Magneton could also do well even though you'd have to breed for HP Grass or Fire or something. Both also have Sturdy, and the computer doesn't switch out very often so Magnet Pull wouldn't be necessary. Metagross is the optimal route though which is obvious to anybody who has ever looked at the gen 3 meta, but it's very strong for good reason. A mixed set with Agility, Psychic, Meteor Mash, and maybe Explosion or Brick Break or Shadow Ball, something that Tyranitar doesn't cover, or breed for a Hidden Power. Or a mixed Salamence or an Alakazam or Starmie, something quick with a lot of power behind it. As it stands, your team has absolutely nothing to deal with opposing Pokemon that have high defense except Toxic stalling and hoping you can get enough Dragon Dances under your belt for it to not matter, yet even then a single Intimidate can end your run, or Skarmory can just wall out out completely between Steel typing and Whirlwind or Counter like you mentioned. But also right now all the opponent needs to do is endure and break through Tyranitar and the rest of your team basically falls apart because Rest + Leftovers + Seismic Toss is not going to have enough muscle behind it to make a dent in a lot of things before they can knock down Dusclops' low HP. Most Pokemon have ~300 HP at level 100, usually more even if only by a little, which means that you have to commit to at least 3 Seismic Tosses + Toxic to win that battle, and you're nearly guaranteed to go second with at minimum 2 out of 3 of your options which is also not helpful, and again compiled on top of Dusclops' low base HP stat. Pressure doesn't do much unless the opposing Pokemon in question has already been worn down at least a little bit, but if I recall I think every PP on Frontier Pokemon are maxed out? I might be wrong about that, I'd have to look at my notes again. A fast Salamence or Alakazam or something would do wonders for you considering the above.
    If you ABSOLUTELY INSIST on using Steelix, please give it Explosion at least. Gen 3 is where Explosion is still good and your current plan is to sack Steelix anyways when times get tough. You know you can live a few physical hits which you could take advantage of. Use Protect to see what you're up against, and then Roar to try your luck and see anything else and to see which of your reserves is going to be more valuable, and then if the situation calls for it, you can keep trying to Roar and see if you can get a glimpse of the last Pokemon, or more likely just blow up. Explosion will heavily dent anything that it touches and you aren't necessarily any worse off failing an Explosion due to getting outsped and 1-shot from Steelix's horrible special defense. I see what you're aiming for with Mud Slap, but I did the math - if you used Explosion, at an Attack IV of 15, 4 Attack EVs, you would have killed that Whiscash.
    4 Atk Steelix Explosion vs. 0 HP / 255 Def Whiscash: 280-330 (77.5 - 91.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
    (this is the stat line of the Whiscash that beat you with 2 Fissures, Whiscash 3 to be exact, and while not a 1-hit, it would have put Whiscash in a position where Tyranitar could have killed it with Earthquake instead of trying to Dragon Dance)
    252+ Atk Tyranitar Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 255 Def Whiscash (at ~25% HP, so assuming the worst possible damage roll): 119-140 (32.9 - 38.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO
    4 Atk Steelix Explosion vs every Marowak in the Battle Frontier is a guaranteed OHKO except for Marowak 1, I looked at all of them.
    I implore you to drop Steelix in favor of something better, but if you don't want to do that (because again, I understand this is a casual run and you want to play with Pokemon that you like, a noble thing), please take Explosion. You are holding yourself back without it. For Dusclops I would also consider Pain Split. It can go either way but Pain Split technically also does damage, and consider having a look into Fire Punch because you have no other ways to really hit any opposing Steel types like you mention toward the end. It's not a great solution but even just a band-aid is better than bleeding out.

    13:35 If I remember correctly, 1-hit KO moves are not affected by accuraccy/evasion stat changes. Meaning you cant use stuff like hone claws in later gens to just surehit those moves, but also cant increase your/decrease their evasion/accuraccy stat to affect the hit chance; Hence even with those drops it always should have been a 30% hit chance. Dont know if it is like that in older gens tho.

  • @Druiff
    @Druiff 9 днів тому +11

    From gen 3 onward, accuracy and evasion stats do not influence the one-hit ko move's accuracy, so the fissure was still at 30 percent accuracy after all the mud-slaps when it hit tyranitar.

      Level difference is the only thing that effects it right? Which obviously doesnt matter at the Battle Frontier.

    • @Druiff
      @Druiff 9 днів тому

      Yes, that's right. When same level as the opponent the accuracy is 30 and every level the user is higher gives an extra accuracy percentage point. And if the user is lower level the move will fail.

    I'm so hyped for the gen 4 content! I got Soul silver recently so definitely going to play alongside. Also would you ever consider doing a stream of a battle tower attempt? That would be pretty cool. Although I get that it might get quite stressful, especially if you get people commenting on what move to use etc.
    The other kind of life updates like you getting the venus fly trap and the cat clips were cool too. I'm in the process of buying my first house and getting a cat is one of the first things I want to do afterwards.

    By using slow mons, you give the ai more chances of hitting you with bs. Moves like drill run and such might be inaccurate, but they only need to hit you once or twice to reset your streak. In my experience, using fast pokemon is better. Even then, I remember losing to quick claw + fissure several times. Try using Swampert, Latios, and Metagross if you want an easier time.

    It's cool to find this channel, I've recently been thinking about playing gen 4 games lately too, I have a HeartGold save and a Platinum save I sort of dropped but can pick up again. I just play them alone and don't really have people to talk with about it so I appreciate your kind of content, it's like having that and hanging out.

    I love the idea of two defensive tanks and one sweeper! With pressure, I bet you could fully stall out the relevant pp of their lead mon, and then set up 6 dragon dances and sweep. I’m not sure if you’ve PP maxed out the dusclops, but I expect you’ll find tons of success if you commit to hard stalling then setting up a sweep once they struggle

    Awesome update. I could tell from the thumbnail that you encountered something dumb in the frontier. Whiscash is such a mediocre Pokémon in this generation because of no dragon dance that fissure is the only thing it has over swampert. Recommendations I would make if you do try to switch out a Pokémon would be either ludicolo or starmie. I raised a starmie for my team and it has solod so many battles for me. But I know you wanna use your favorites so I hope you can beat it with the guys you have now. Good luck!

    For the battle frontier team, while this is certainly easier said than done what if you tried swapping out Steelix for another defensive pokemon? Perhaps something with a grass move or hidden power grass that can one shot them. Know hidden power grass is easier said than done to get but could be worth considering. Could see something like Cloyster, Suicune, Slowbro, or possibly even a Swampert of your own being able to fill that role even if they don't quite have the immense defense stat like Steelix does.

    Ur best bet for having an easier time against the battle tower would be ur type coverage and switching the steelix out. I know u don’t want to so my suggestion would be to change steelix to have toxic instead of dusclops and give dusclops will-o-wisp. It works extremely well against scary physical types since burn cuts their ATK in half so it makes tanking on dusclops so much easier. I personally have it on mine and have my milotic toxic with recover to stall out the bulky water types.
